Bay Area Radio Predictions for 2011

Folks:

Are people really making educated predictions? Many items on the lists seem to be more of a "wish list".

Mike

These lists usually end up like that. I'll stand by mine, though (easy since I only made two).

KFRC? Again? No. The desecration of the body must stop. It's over. The brand has been completely devalued. Plus, tempus has fugited, gang. If you're going to have an exercise in nostalgia and a relevant sales demo, bring back KYUU. And, no...I'm not suggesting that would work, either.

I second that emotion. It's a bit painful to hear the KCBS top-of-the-hour ID which now includes "KFRC-FM," but at least the calls are attached to a top flight news operation, not a low-rent excuse for a Classic Hits station.

Bring back KYUU? Now there's an idea. You could probably get Don Bleu to delay his retirement if you paid him an extra million a year. And Jeff McNeill would come back if you sedated and kidnapped him, then chained him to the microphone.

I "predicted" a year or two ago that KIOI would flip to Classic Hits, change its call letters to KRFF, and become "K-Erf 101." Never happened. I'm not sure why - I thought it was a great idea.

In 2011 John Mack Flanagan will again be touted on this site as the greatest living radio personality . Many posters will also clamor for bringing back the glory days of Top 40 and how good radio used to be.
But Movin' will be the 2011 Top 40 success with today's top personalities Fernando & Greg getting bigger.
But Don Bleu will NOT retire. Ever.
And he shouldn't.

Bleu could have retired years ago, had he wanted to.

No doubt - seeing as he's been earning in excess of $1 million per year for awhile now. But i remember that he said he'd be retiring in about a year. Of course, that was probably 2 years ago, so maybe he's changed his mind.

In a thread full of inaccurate "predictions" (more like 99.9% sure not going to happen wishes) - this is the one that I see without a doubt being true.

John Mack Flanagan is the world's greatest living radio personality.

Gee - I sure miss the Big 610 and 1260/KYA.

There - you win.

I'm too young to ever had heard him, does anyone have some airchecks of him? I'd like to hear him

I love it when Travis is being funny. Let's see ... John Mack was on Classic Hits KFRC in 2007, so that would make you all of about three years old now, right?

Here's an article I wrote about JMF nearly twenty years ago, with a couple of his airchecks at the bottom of the page:

http://www.bayarearadio.org/bard/john-mack-flanagan_summer-1992.shtml

Really? Maybe I have heard him, never listened to KFRC much when it was on 106.9 though, and the only airchecks I have of 106.9 KFRC is I taped a few A's games, so I have TOH IDs with Dave Sholin and Celeste Perry

There are also 2 or 3 JMF airchecks at reelradio.com. One if from his early days in Tucson (I think). The site has an annual fee of $12, but it's worth it, IMO - there are hundreds of airchecks there.

If you're geeked out on radio (and I know you are) get out the crowbar and pry the lousy $12 out of your wallet. Uncle Ricky does an amazing job, and the fee is worth each and every penny ... and then some.

I'm in

KGO will go FM at 94.1
106.9 will have te KCBS-FM calls
KMEL will go back to Rock (Sadly it might not happen)
Movin 997 will stay the same
92.7 Rev-FM becomes Pulse 92.7

Okay, I'll throw in: Classic 1260 KYA becomes 93 KYA FM again... ;D

I don't think that's a possibility, though for a long time I've been wondering if 93.3 might be due for a change. But SBS seems to be plugging away. They might be happy with what they have.

I will predict that some of the HD-2 channels will go away though. I scanned the band a couple of days ago & notice that's already happened with 107.7 Bone 2.

To be clear, I said nothing about 93.3 FM...

Sadly, you are right. KMEL will not switch to Rock. In fact, the calls of KMEL is more synonymous with Urban Music than Rock Music today. KMEL has had the Urban Format longer than any other format on 106.1 including when it was the Camel. The Camel Is Dead & Buried.
