Bay Area Radio Predictions for 2011

Oh, I thought SJ and SF were different markets.

San Jose (Santa Clara County) is part of the San Francisco Metro Survey Area (MSA).

I guess that explains why KNTV was playing translators tag in Frisco and the North Bay until its tower moved to San Bruno Mountain in northern San Mateo County.

Frisco? As in Texas?

Dude, this is the San Francisco board.

No Frisco as in the nickname that my cousin whom grew up in the Bay Area calls San Francisco.

Only a non SF resident refers to SF as Frisco....

Live 105 will indeed flip format. Hey, they had a great run, 1987-2010, 23 years.

I'm kinda hoping for a Pure Dance format with Trevor Simpson as APD/MD, but who knows?
That makes NO sense! Why would Live 105 flip, when their only competition is going to flip at any minute??

I believe the rationale is that alt-rock is no longer a force. Even if Entercom hadn't traded 105 to CBS so the latter could put Stern on in SF, the format still may have had no oomph left in it. Not saying I agree with this, but I'm reasonably sure that's what the suits are thinking.

I believe you now, although I was just about the last person aboard thinking Live 105 was going to flip.

It makes perfect sense. Alice obviously isn't going to go flat-out alternative, but they've always leaned that way in the past. The exception is the last 3 years where they went pretty generic Hot AC, but I've noticed them throwing in a few more alt. tracks lately. I could see them doing something like a Hot AC/Alt. hybrid like 98.9 in Seattle, and that would set them apart from Star (generic Hot AC, a little 80s based) and Mix (pop-leaning Hot AC.) And if CBS Radio takes Live out of the picture, their Alice's ratings should go up quite nicely.

Alright, here's a prediction. How 'bout KFRC-FM flipping to a Jack FM-style format? Cheap to run and does well in PPMs. Or perhaps oldies (any FM outlet in the market doing it today?).

Of course, CBS would have done it already if they ever were, right?

KFRC-FM is doing well with their simulcast of the KCBS news format - why would they change back? And nothing could be cheaper to run than a simulcast, right?

Bonneville tried the "Jack" format a few years ago, though they called it "Max FM" due to copyright considerations. Actor John O'Hurley ("J. Peterman" on Seinfeld) did the voicework, and supplied some funny material. The music was good, too - in my opinion. But it was never popular here.

If I'm not mistaken, Max FM was prior to PPM. This kinds of format (along with oldies) seems to do well in the PPM era.

I just hate seeing a good FM signal being wasted by simulcasting a powerful AM. And does the FM really add that much more to KCBS' ratings/revenue? I would guess another format, though not as cheap to run (but cheap regardless) would bring in MORE money to CBS.

All true about the simulcast, but when it's all said and done, it had better make WAY better numbers down the road, because you are giving up an entire powerful signal you could be selling separately! They may split them at some point, perhaps migrating news to the FM and doing something different on 740.

And what "something different" could CBS come up with that would make money on 740? Religious programming? Brokered programs or infomercials? Maybe a new home for those podcasts that both of KYCY's listeners have been missing?

Ooh, ooh...I know - they could use 740 to simulcast All News KFRC-FM 106.9.

Until the early 70s, most FM stations were simulcasting their AM sister stations because practically nobody was listening to FM. It seems like the same fate will befall AM before too many more years. If practically nobody is listening to AM, I can't even imagine the infomercial hucksters will be interested.

Religious listeners will probably go to AM where their programs are, but I'm not sure how many religious stations a market can handle.

Any of you folks seen the latest Radio and Internet Newsletter? Radio is going to get a bit of competition for the dash space in a lot of vehicles in the near future. Are you paying attention CBS and other radio company executives? Interestiing reading there.

Hey folks! Here are my 2011 Bay Area Radio Predictions:

1. KYLD will launch an HD-3 channel named "Totally '80s" a lot similar to the one at WTMX in
Chicago.

2. The Oakland A's will once again change flagship radio stations, this time to an FM station.

3. KBAY will flip to CHR/Pop and a new soft rock station will debut in San Jose.

4. KKSF will re-position itself as "Channel 103-7" and will flip to Alternative and Live 105
will become an all-sports radio station.

5. The Bay Area will get a second country music radio station.

6. JV from WiLD 94-9 will launch a channel on Sirius/XM Radio

That's my 2011 radio predictions, now what are yours?
Well, I think the only prediction here that came true is the A's going to the FM Dial.

Willing to bet $29.99 with anyone on here, that at least 2 of my predictions will actually happen!
and of course two of your predictions did turn out true (KBAY remaining the same and KKSF tweaking its format to Classic Hits)

Surprised that no one predicted the demise of Classical KDFC on 102.1.
