before the Star burns out..

It would have been announced by now if Star 102 WTSS, #5 in the latest ratings, was moving to another frequency. But that wouldn't stop an owner like Townsquare from flipping #14 rated 92.9 WBUF to Hot AC. I imagine there's nothing preventing WBUF from calling itself Star 92.9, once K-Love is on 102.1.

I assume WTSS's Hot AC audience is nearly all between 25 and 54, female leaning, excellent demos. Has anyone stated why EMF chose THIS station? Audacy owns 98.5 WKSE, Kiss-FM, a Top 40 station with lower ratings. Did anyone say "EMF wanted 110,000 watt WTSS because it can be heard in much of the Toronto market as well as Buffalo"?

I would guess WTSS is Audacy's best billing FM station. Maybe Talk WBEN and Sports WGR bill more, because with a spoken-word format you can sell more spots than a music station can. WBEN is #4 and WGR is #6. But on the FM dial, WTSS may be one of Buffalo's most profitable stations.
Kiss is 8th in the market doing well not sure how they're low.

I’m banking star moves to 107.7\104.7. They might be working in boosting the signal. There is no real justification for keeping the wolf in the air

Moving STAR to 107.7 would be futile. The Wolf is expendable, but it's unlikely that the STAR audience would follow a generic format to an inferior signal. I doubt that Audacy is interested in any future investment on the Buffalo cluster...

The 107.7 signal is what it is and what it shall be. The transmitter plant, tower and antenna were upgraded during the Adelphia-Rigas years before Adelphia went belly-up and Rigas Sr., and one of his kids did time at the Club Fed. 107.7 is locked between Canadian FMs and immovable to the west-northwest. The 104.7 translator is arguably the best metro signal (as some owners prefer to call translators) in the market. Your assessment that Star's Hot AC format will shift from 102.5 to 107.7/104.7 seems logical. In all likelihood AC will outperform the mediocre attempt at Country that is now the Wolf. Time will tell ... tick, tick, tick

To add to that, a lot of listening is now shifting to online and smart speakers. The latest study says that nationally about 38% of listening is online or via app. In cars, 107.7/104.7 covers the market well enough to service listeners. IF Audacy doesn't sell off the market, it would make a lot more sense to move Star to 107.7/104.7 than to keep throwing money at the country format.

Commentary:
I personally believe Janet & Pickle is too much to " buy out" and acquire WKSE.

Say, if there are 18 months remaining with J&P , why spend ( example) 2.75 million for the three of them to bought out and then pay 5.75 m for the station;
wait it out, and pay 4 million 2025, second quarter.

Intellectual Property, or portions thereof including the format, remains property of the seller. The buyer purchases only the physical assets of the licensee: Transmitter, antenna & tower lease/ownership, audio equipment, boards, old used Fidelipac carts with rattling tension bars, banged-up headphones and beat studio chairs. J&P stay on the the Audacy payroll.

I believe it may be a case of whole Enchilada or no Enchilada for the remaining properties.
EMF was a special case because they are the unique security that competition is not going to happen.
Selling one station at a time fails to secure that there will not be a boost in (head on) competition on the dial...something Entercom/Audacy has been bending over backwards for YEARS to avoid.

Thank you for clarifying

Just because *you* ( not you specifically) don't listen doesn't mean there isn't competition. 92.1 not audible outside of WNY, and I am aware you are in Canada...
the dove mixes talk, but not preaching along with CCM, contemporary Christian music.
in addition, wdc×99/5 will preach or read more than talk, however, they will also play music and when they do, it sounds geared towards a younger generation; or an older crowd that appreciate the format.

" we shall see "

As I said, there is no head on competition anymore for Audacy, as there has not been for years, (locally) and I have been very clear about that.

True, but before EMF took over WPLJ NY, it was a totally different situation. Everyone was professional. Just a different market and organization.
But when they took over The Loop in Chicago (owned by the same company and at the same time) they "rebelled" too. I don't think EMF really cares, honestly. They know full well there is not a lot of crossover between Rock and Christian AC. Even in the case of Hot AC, they'll probably lose half the existing audience, but that doesn't matter. EMF doesn't live or die by ratings, they exist on donations. If they get 10% of the audience Star has, but 2% donate, it'll "be profitable" which will just go into buying more stations to complete nationwide coverage.

Is it just me, or has WMSX's playlist become more contemporary / brighter of late?

I suspect a rebrand of 96.1 will occur soon (to better represent the brighter sound), and I also suspect 92.9 will stick with a rock format.

I just hope Kiss doesn't leave the airwaves.
Depends. Are they going to declare "the audience was too young"
That would be one good excuse to move Star to 98.5 and keep country.
If not, it would be silly to abandon something that's working (better than country music)
for them.

One day the format will be Hot AC as Star 1-0-2 point 5; the next day it will be K-Love. Quite likely, a significant number of Star's present P1 base of 35-54 Women won't be offended by the change and a significant number will like the new K-Love format as much as they liked the former Hot AC format. Could be the smoothest format change and ownership transfer in EMF's history.

Are you saying that the STAR format is so bland and disposable that nobody will notice the change? You could be right. I expect some of the audience will opt out of the new format. When does STAR finally meet its Maker? Boot Hill Cemetery is ready to welcome another dead format...
