Best Altanta morning guy, ever?

So, the thing here is to think about individual people as opposed to teams, and orient the thinking towards personality, music radio. With that in mind, Scott Slade wouldn't count. The Bert Show, as good as it is, wouldn't qualify, because it's more ensemble than individual. Neither would the Regular Guys. But how about these people (comment away!):
  • Skinny Bobby Harper
  • Gary McKee
  • Steve McCoy
  • Rhubarb Jones
  • Frank Ski
  • Moby in the Morning
  • Anyone else?

Gotta put Rude in the mix. Guy is a freaking PRO.

I nominate Mark McCain, although he might be DQed as he was part of the Wake-Up Crew on 96 Rock, and I don't know if he would be good enough to qualify with that already elite group just by himself. Thoughts?

I'd nominate Ross & Wilson but that's a duo.

Then there's the Greaseman, but he was syndicated. And I don't know if he would qualify, anyway.

I definitely agree on Rude. And conversely, if the thread were about the biggest morning blunders ever, I'd put removing Rude in 1996 at the top of the list.

One more comment...you said music personalities only. I'm not disagreeing, but I do want to say that Scott Slade injects personality into his anchoring, as did Tom Hughes, one of the most entertaining and funny morning news anchors ever.

There was none better than Skinny Bobby Harper. Not the WSB Bobby Harper, but the WIIN (and before that WQXI) Bobby Harper. Dale O'Brien was damn good too. One of the best sets of pipes in Atlanta radio and a wicked sense of humor.

How about the Big Four:
Zak Tyler
The Morning Mess
Cledus T. Judd
The Giant Show

Syndicated:
Bob & Tom

My vote would be for Randy Miller, who did mornings on Z93 during their CHR heyday in the mid to late 80s.

When/where did Dale O'Brien do mornings? I always remember him as a midday/PM drive guy. Was it when he was at Peach?

I wouldn't call the late 80s Z-93's CHR heyday. The bloom was off the rose by that point, getting clobbered by Power 99 starting in 1986, then their "churban" format, and then finally flipping to classic rock in 1989.

IMO Z-93 jumped the shark when their lineup of Ross & Wilson AM, Randy Reeves midday, and Dale O'Brien PM left.

Plus RM followed Steve McCoy--a hard act to follow--who followed Ross & Wilson--an even harder act to follow.

When I came to Atlanta in 1994, Dale O'Brien was doing mornings on B98.5 with Trevor Johns. After B98.5 let him go, a mistake (IMHO) that led to years of turmoil in mornings, he was hired by Peach 94-9, first to fill in and then in mornings. For whatever reason, he was nowhere as good on Peach as he had been on B98.5 and didn't last long.

Early 80s through early 90s (or thereabouts) at B98.5. When I cam back to Atlanta in the late 80s, Kari Dean (traffic) was an integral part of the show. Prior to that, Dale was the afternoon guy at Z93. I don't recall him ever doing middays. As Roddy pointed out, Peach came later. He wasn't as funny on Peach because his hands were tied reading liner cards.

Rhubarb Jones is without question the best morning dj ever in Atlanta radio,23 in the same market at the same station, come on,we could use the BCS formula and he would still be number one.

Steak Shapiro - Like a super-sized cockroach living in NYC the guy is a survivor. He is a legen ihn his own mind and everyong knows it.

Spent last wekend with Ruby's newsgirl (from Montgomery, back in The Day) and her gent. And rehashed some stories 'bout 'War-ron'. He gets the nod here.
