Best Buy's new HD Radio Shelf System

Let's go to the original press release from Webcast Metrics and Andomedia back in August, 2004:

"...a revolutionary new platform for measurement of Internet radio audiences. In a manner far more accurate than standard broadcast radio ratings, Webcast Metrics monitors the size of a station’s audience and converts it to standard radio metrics including Average Quarter Hour, Cume, and Total Time Spent Listening...reports are derived from real data, rather than estimates based on small sample sizes...third party audience measurement..."

Streaming clients include: Katz Media Group, CBS Radio, ESPN Radio, Radio Disney, Fox News Radio, Bonneville, Westwood One, Saga, Cumulus, Cox, etc.

The streets are deserted in Dallas. A couple of tumbleweeds bounce in the wind past the camera lens. Aside from the sound of a distant howling wind, several voices can be heard calling plaintively, "Radioman100.....where are you hiding? You seem to have completely disappeared from this thread. What are you afraid of? Internet radio?"

Ladies and gentlemen...

I give you the definitive evidence of why we should not have HD radio. :)

Pretty scientific actually...

BTW, I was in Dallas last weekend. Apparently VSA was not there. The closest Tumbleweed I saw was at Carl's Corner... :)

I've noticed that each time I've done a climactic "gotcha" to Radioman100, he disappears from the thread and the good inspector drops by with a distraction. Nice try.

"Climactic gotcha?" More like an anti-climactic I really, really don't give a rip about web radio.

Once again, you've managed to hijack a thread on an HD Radio product and turn it into yet another misplaced discussion of web radio. Read very carefully vsa. I'll put it in big, bold print for you:

I DO NOT CARE ABOUT WEB RADIO!

I don't care how it's rated or how many people might even be listening to it, because it will be GONE soon. It's OVER for all of the reasons I've cited again and again. Web radio CRB rates are OUTRAGEOUS and Arbitron DOES NOT INCLUDE WEB RADIO LISTENING IN AUDIENCE ESTIMATES. The biggest webcasters have gone on record saying they are LOSING MONEY with it.

Why on Earth would I care about web radio since it has NO FUTURE? I certainly have no interest in debating web radio on the HD RADIO board either. You're only here because you realize THE WEB RADIO BOARD HAS NO READERS. IT HAS NO ACTION because NOBODY IS INTERESTED IN WEB RADIO!

back in the late 20's til 30's, record companies also tried to keep radio stations from playing their product. "not for air play". To claim it has no future may be premature. Platform has too much momentum and is prevasive now, good or bad.

I'm sure companies like AOL and Yahoo are holding out hope for some relief. They would have shut down their streaming efforts entirely by now if they weren't. The reality though is as of today, January 4, 2008, the extreme CRB rates are on and they're losing money. Nothing I've seen leads me to believe that's going to change. While I could care less about web radio, I do read the bigger trades like All Access, and they would have mentioned the possibility of a reprieve.

It's not happening. The RIAA's Washington lobby is infinitely more powerful than the webcasters.

Napster was pervasive and had a lot of momentum too.

Would you please list the Internet radio stations that have already shut down since the new CRB rates were announced last year?

Negotiations between webcasters and SoundExchange continue. If there is no resolution, Congress will act. In other situations, private deals have been reached. Internet radio is not going away.

Again, I don't care. I really don't, so why would I want to waste my precious time researching it? I don't think I could have said it any better than Pandora's own blog anyway:

Pandora Online Blog said:
The Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) has recently released a revised fee schedule for internet radio. Left unchanged, these rates will end internet radio, period. The RIAA has effectively convinced this federal committee to establish rates that make online radio a non-viable business.

Wishful thinking guy, wishful thinking. You don't have to believe me though, see the quote from Pandora above.

I'm certain that RM needs no support from me. I merely was trying to point out that what you later claimed to be a climactic "gotcha", is just more sillly web radio promoting hooey.

Still, I would be glad to stop being a distraction if you would like. In the future, feel free to label these climactic "gotcha's" so I'll know when to avoid them. I just don't see them when reading. :)
