Best Classic Cameo Appearances

John Wayne on The Beverly Hillbillies in the episode where Granny thinks that Indians have invaded Beverly Hills.

Supposedly The Duke's compensation for that appearance was in the form of a bottle of scotch, presented to him by Irene Ryan after the filming.

Others that come to mind: Johnny Carson as a hotel doorman on Get Smart, Bob Villa on Home Improvement, O.J. Simpson on Here's Lucy (ok, we'll forget about that one....)

My personal favorite was Russell Johnson on the episode of Newhart where Channel 8 was running the Gilligan's Island Marathon. As the crowd was being chased out of the room, Russell (the last one in line) stops and shouts "Hey, I want to see how this ends!" Peter Scolari's character replies "They don't get off the island, trust me!" I just about split a gut when it first ran!

Speaking of Scooby Doo.....

How about the time the Josie and the ------ Cats gang appeared on Scooby Doo and got involved in solving the mystery....It was classic seeing all the characters interacting and being chased about. The best line of all was Scooby saying 'a pussycat scared me?!?!' when Scooby was scared, unknown at the time, by Sebastin the cat. I would love to see that episode again, it is a riot.

Alas, most of the "real" celebrities were tied into CBS which aired The New Scooby-Doo Movies (notably, Sonny & Cher). This factor may explain why celebrities on "other" networks (notably Johnny Carson, Bob Hope and Dean Martin) weren't featured in such installments.

But the late Jerry Reed (who was also in a TNSDM episode) did have a CBS connection. Remember his c.1972 summer replacement variety series, The Jerry Reed "When You're Hot, You're Hot" Hour (I think that was the title)?

Mentioning cameos on cartoons made me think that in Johnny Bravo (One of the last cartoon series produced by Hanna-Barbera) there are several cameos of other H-B characters, including Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Scooby Doo and the Mystery, Inc. Gang, and Fred Flintstone.
