What are some of the most famous contests of all time? What kind of stuff did Dahl do in his early years? Lujack? Johnny B?

"The Last Contest" on WLS always comes to mind, using the Pink Floyd music bed...

"WMAQ is gonna make me rich!" Classic.

Actually, CFL did the last contest. As far as WLS...

"Your Ticket to Ride" a chance to win one of 44 brand new Fords

"A Datsun A Day"

"Track on down to Disney World". This is significant because it was the first time Disney marketed itself outside of their empire. They went to WLS because of that large mid America audience. Remember, the Big 89 had a night time cume in the millions.

"Sing it and win"

The last unique WLS promotion was in the mid eighties when they did an Independence Day/Beatles promotion where they gave away copies of the Red, White and Blue Beatles albums.

The worst contest they ever did was the never ending "Secret Serial Number" in their bleak days of 1987-89. It seems new owner Cap Cites froze all radio promotion money because of the possibility of selling the radio properties, which never happened.

The promotion machine that was WLS in their heyday was inspiring and ever changing. Today we have "The Birthday Game" that stations keep recycling because "it's safe and well tested" and boring.

Thanks -- it was CFL, not LS, who did "Last Contest."

I remember the other WLS contests you mention, too -- and I remember them far better than anything on the air lately. Which says something!

Loop Songs ca. 1981.

The idea, The Loop plays a once second snippet of seven songs starting at 10am some random Monday. The first correct caller after the seven seconds of songs plays; wins $10,000. The contest was scheduled to run for at least three months.

Meanwhile at WMET, Bob Stroud and Dave Benson tape the seven second sounder and dissect it in the production room. When the songs were figured out, WMET plays them on the air, back to back. The next time the Loop Songs sounder plays, the station is flooded with calls. The contest ends on day one.

In a bizarre twist, Stroud and Benson, eventually work at the Loop.

Teens with too much time on their hands love contests. That's why Top 40 stations do the best.
Conservative adults listening to talk radio hate contests. They want to call in and rant, not win a prize.

Any Promotion Director will tell you, if you run a contest on an adult radio station you end up with the same contest piglets as the other stations. Most know them by name.

Give away cash and you'll pick up a few more of the unemployed and a gaggle of bored housewives. The affluent listeners doesn't want your car, your trip, or your "Most exciting contest, ever." They don't want to pay the taxes on your prize. They have the money to buy the trip, the car or the flat screen they want. What they crave is more time to enjoy what they have.

Well, that and good health.
