Best country station you ever heard?

In no particular order:
In my area...

WTHT 99.9 Auburn-Lewiston (Portland), Maine
WOKQ 97.5 Dover, NH
WCTY 97.7 Norwich, CT
WPKX 97.9 Springfield Mass (Until about 2008.)

Of everywhere I have listened to country.
WCOL 92.3 in Columbus, OH
WTHT 99.9 in Portland, ME
are probably the two best.

Again, just my $0.02

WSM, the Aircastle of the South, especially when Eddie Stubbs is on the air.

I like WSM and Eddie Stubs too. Unfortunately, much of WSM's overnight playlist is not real country music. Eddie Stubs is the main reason I listen. I love true, real, rural country music (pre-90s). The feel of listening to it is like no other listening experience. I also consider WSM to be my favorite country music DX catch, next to KQQZ 1190 and KRHW 1520 AM.

Even though I worked at WVLV, I think the best Country Station I ever heard was WNOW in York, Pa. I still remember the jingle, "American Music... WNOW." My favorite announcer was Corky in the morning. It broke my heart when they became Q106, WQXA and became a rock station. WNOW still broadcasted, I think at 1260 AM. Of course with WLBR 1270 being nearby, I couldn't hear Corky in the morning anymore.

104.3 WKTC Tarboro NC 1976-1989
1250 WGHB Farmville NC 1968-1986
95.1 WRNS Kinston NC 1968-1995
97.7 The Country Bear Kinston NC 1997-2000
100,7 WFMA Rocky MT NC 1980-1986
WKIX 102.3 Goldsboro NC 2002-2005
98.5 WSAY Rocky MT,NC 1990-2001
98.9 The Bear Greenville New Bern NC 2004-Present

Some of my local favorites in no particular order

When the 'outlaws' were creating the 'hit sound of country' and reaching younger demos in the early 80's, I enjoyed getting off work from the 1:54 minute rotation of the top nine power hits on KINT-98, I'd tune between K-102 and Y-96 in El Paso.. I thought I might like working for Lee Masters, but was TOO CHICKEN to try it, at 24... Now, thirty years later, I am doing VT on the HOT COUNTY and live on the CLASSIC COUNTRY and wondered why I waited so long... FUN! So, K-102 and KHEY-FM (Y-96) in El Paso, 1981-82.....

WSM remains at the top of the list. Simply because Eddie Stubbs is incredible. A real music historian. I'm also really enjoying Classic Country 103.9 out of Louisville.

Eddie is as entertaining to watch read the scripts and commericals at Loveless Barn/Cafe, as the music that is great on the live shows! King of the deeeeee-livery.... ;D

Oh yeah. I've seen him live at the summer bluegrass concert series at the Ryman, and even got to meet him several times. He's like a celebrity in my book. I love how he tells the history behind the music he plays. That's really cool to me as a music fan. You don't see that very much. Usually they just play the music and either stick in voiceovers, or if they're live, which is rare nowadays, they might tell you what song they just played if you're lucky, but usually they just gab about stuff not related to the music. I like some of that, but I also wish they'd talk about the music. Of course I'm a nerd and have very unusual tastes, so it probably won't happen except with Eddie stubbs and NPR wen they play music.

I must say, for an HD-2 subchannel, "US 99.5" in New London, CT is sounding pretty darn good. ;)

I've always liked KDBL 92.9 Yakima, and now I'm a fan of KGY 96.9 McCleary/Olympia "96.9 KAYO". They use KAYO because the calls used to be on 99.3 in Aberdeen before it moved several miles east and became a Mexican station. KGY is playing lots of 1990s stuff mixed with the new country, which I don't see way too much of anymore on other stations.

The best country station I ever heard was WHN in New York. From their start in early 1973 until their demise in 1987, WHN had the greatest personalities and imaging. An incredible station. KLAC in Los Angeles in the 70s and 80s also was a great station.
Thank you!
You'll find vintage WHN pix and pix from the recent reunions, as well as WHN audio and video on the Facebook page for "WHN: When New York City Went Country". Be sure to like the page and tell any other WHN fans.

Back in the day, 1170, WWVA, Wheeling, West Virginia (that last part superfluous to most, so I apologize).

Now, IF they would only bring back their iconic Saturday night show and stream it!

Great times...getting to MC Jamboree USA is a highlight of my career...and I get to say I knew Brad Paisley way back when!

Just my opinion...JUSA was one part victim of Country's runaway success - booking fees exploded starting in the 90's - and one part victim of Clear Channel's shortsightedness.

I still believe national sponsorship and syndication could've saved the show. When I was there, it was a hipper version of the Opry, where you got an hour of opening acts and the second hour was the headliner's show (not an Opry adaptation) in the intimate surroundings and amazing acoustics of the Capitol Music Hall. Too bad no attempt was ever made to try taking it national.

That said, the revival - the Wheeling Jamboree - is probably closer in spirit to the original 1930's-1950's format.
