Best PD

In the interest of talking about something other than ratings, here is a topic:
1. What makes a good PD?
2. Who is the best in Seattle?

My answers:
1. A good PD has an overall vision, grasp of mechanics and can motivate a staff without stifling their creativity. PD's who have endless aircheck sessions or exhibit other controlling behavior are doomed to failure. A good PD must also deliver ratings.

2. I am curious about the best in Seattle. KUBE's PD would win the award if it is based on ratings. WOLF's PD launched a format well. I hear good reports about L at the END and Marcus at KBKS too.

1. Listens. Allows talent to be talent.
2. I can't tell any more, there are too many liner card jocks and regional execs running the show to say that any PD is actually a PD.

1. Caring about people. That includes their own staff, management and salespeople.

2. Don't know many personally, but on the basis of ratings you'd go with Eric Powers, Carey Curlop, Becky Brenner, Kent Phillips. On the basis of longevity Kent Phillips, Jay Kelly, Carey Curlop, Becky Brenner and Eric Powers. On the basis of working for a caring person?

Good thread!

In chewing on this ... was nice to reflect and realize there were more "good" people I worked with than the other kind. In fact, many of the stinky situations I can think of can just as easily be traced to my being a d**K while in my 20's as it can to the other side of the table.

Other market PD's I really admire (and learned from) ... Mike Phillips, Bill Young
People with Seattle history ... Kent Phillips, Robin Mitchell, Dick Curtis, Duff Johnson, Klem Daniels, Casey Keating, Rich Osborn

Common thread is these are people who treat[ed] talent like team members and yet still had leadership where you felt they weren't "making it up" as they went along. All had capacity to deal with errata thrown their way by various competitors, market conditions, etc.

Several people I can think of who were NICE people but couldn't program worth a dang ... or worse yet was the inverse ... could keep the station on track; but one was always careful to time trips to the restroom to avoid having to make "small talk" with the person along the way to/from because they were just no fun. At the bottom of the heap were those who got the job because they "knew someone" then were stupid enough to think that gave them the right to treat you like crap too. One worked at an FM in Tacoma, one on lower Queen Anne!

Mike's legacy, though, is that he had one of the best stations on the planet ... programming KRTH with the drivetime teams of RW Morgan & Don Steele --- and when he lost those people he STILL kept the station highly visible and on track. That station hasn't been the same since his departure. Bill Young was an imaging God (also known for doing all those national concert ads throughout the 80's & 90's) ... who, paired with Gordon McLendon's imagineering ... was able to create magic on a little ol' 5kW rocker down the street from Brennan's of Houston!

What makes a good PD: Treat people fairly and a willingness to take risk, ancipate future trends, not react to them.

Best PD in Seattle? Shelly Hart, Kent Phillips, Carey Curlop would certainly be near the top of the list. Their staff gives them props and they have a history of delivering ratings. Tony Coles would top my list of the best PD's, who no longer work in Seattle. He did magic with KRWM and is doing the same in Portland.

Mama doesn't know best AGAIN! Shelly Hart is not a PD, Powers is PD at KUBE. Shelly oversees. Get it straight Mama so we can take you seriously.

1) Someone who has good ideas, the vision and drive to excute them, someone who knows their audience and who cares about their employees

2) CAREY CURELOP - without a doubt!

1). waits 18 months before making a talent move.

2). Curlop. have worked with many p.d.'s and he's the top in seattle.

Shellie is a PD, she's the PD of the two Clear Channel south sound stations.

Great topic!

1.) A great PD knows their audience, and as a result delivers entertaining and compelling content to that audience, as legitimized through delivering a large audience who spend a lot of time with the radio station. Additionally, the great PD respects and is respected by their staff; has keen entertainment and music (where applicable) instincts.

2.) Great West Coast PD's that I'm aware of include: Mike Preston (formerly Seattle, now SF); Kevin Weatherly (KROQ/KCBS); Curtis Johnson (KWOD/Sacramento); John Allers (formerly KCNL-San Francisco); Tony Coles (formerly Seattle, now Portland); Mike O'Connor (Denver-Western US, but not West-Coast); Sam Diggedy (Monterey)

Curious ... when did Curtiss leave the Sacto Entercom cluster? Lost touch many years ago and it looks like he's now across town?
