As a student of history, I would like to see what the opinion is on who is the best radio personality to ever cracked open a mic in the Tri-Cities market. Whether they are still on-the-air or hung it up 20 years ago, let me know what your opinion is.

Could you ask an easier question? 20 years ago? Try about 70. My vote's for Tennessee Ernie Ford! Ok crack out the archives and we'll compare. Most people probably don't have my taste. Even if he wasn't the best, he's the most famous.

n ono no no ...Those lil "polls" never end up good and are usually started by those who will likely be miffed if they're not on the "list" Well...let the crying begin. PB

Having been from Greeneville, I can't remember hearing Charlie Chase when he was in Kingsport, so I really can't vote for him. My vote would have to go between Don Dale and Fred Story at WJSO. The whole airstaff was great, but those two stood out in my mind.

Don Dale(along)....That used to be how he identified himself on air....Is a great guy to work with and a prince of a gentleman, but not an outstanding personality,,,great program director but not great air personality

I remember the voices. Don Dale and Fred Story had two of the best radio voices I had heard...Al Lefevere also was pretty good on the air, although he hated being on the air, by his own admission. He was good, though.

Pure Blood, I don't expect to be on anyone's poll! I am not that good. I was just curious as to what people thought. That's all!

Not to get off the subject but a couple of those names made their way through Knoxville, Wayme Bernard, aka...Charlie Chase and Fred Story. Wayne was at WKGN in it's heyday and Fred Story at WRJZ.

Back to the tri-cities wasn't there a Dr. Don on WFHG-AM in the late 70's or early eighties? What ever happen to him.

OK, maybe I had some help with this input....but does anyone remember someone calling themselves "mark in the morning" on wqut...in the 70's (80's?) ? Q-Morning Zoo.??? Was that anyone who's still around?

Everyone here seems to be skipping over one of my favorites. A guy that was here around 2000 or 2001. His stay was brief, because nobody in this market (listeners or radio brethren) truly understood his raw radio genius. He worked for WQUT and I think he worked for another station or two in the market as well. Briefly there too. If you never met him in the flesh, you might be inclined to believe his mere existence is simply an urban legend. He's the closest thing to a real folk hero this market will ever have. JOHN MICHAELSON. Even his name is pure genius. His real name is Mike Johnson. That's just a tip off to how creative this guy is. His on-air persona was simply delightful. His antics once the mic was off were even more of a hoot. Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Anyone that doesn't remember John Michaelson's special brand of cringe worthy radio can always track him down on the web. See what kind of hijinks and hilarity he's up to now. I think now he's finally been relegated to a myspace page. But still, you'll find it hard not to be impressed. He's written books. Recorded music albums with his "band". He's recorded albums of stand up comedy material. He's put out several "best of" albums from his part time days at QUT and the Saturday night "Solid Gold" show that he did for a while in Erwin. It's kind of funny though, that every website he's done he has links to all of his famous materials, but the links never seem to work right. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that he also appeared in some movies and did voice work for Futurama. That guy is the real deal. So, if you want to talk about Tri-Citie's Radio legends...Turn the spot light to John Michaelson. If you're doing the internet search for him...Also try JT Michaelson. Wow...What a guy.

Hats off J-Street. Though this myspace version of the John Michaelson experience isn't quite as good as the old ones, it's still sure to provide a few chuckles.

Turd!!
OMG, how could that name be forgotten....I mean it's well known that I was so "amazed" by him that I stepped away from the microphone, after telling him how I felt about him, and took a hiatus... And now I am so hurt, he has a myspace, and I am not one of his friends. :'( You would think my raw honesty with him would have endeared me to him....*sigh* I will step over in the corner and silently weep....

::)

I did notice he's added a last name with one of those hyphens...did he get married??? :p

Here's what you need to do. Go to J.T. Michaelson-Galloolie's myspace page, go to his list of "buddies" and click on the second one, his lovely bride. On her space you will find yourself treated to a lovely song called "Living Next Door to Alice", that I assume, and it really is just an assumption, is written and performed by Mr. Michaelson-Galileo himself, accompanied by the Karaoke Players. You owe it to yourself and those you love to listen to this song. Sweet Fancy Moses.

;D J-Street...you make me laugh..seriously who would have more than one MySpace, and thank you for that (for lack of a better word) :-\ interesting link.
And Slop, thank you for informing my loved ones and I about the gal next door Alice. Still hard at it, that crazy Michaelson. ::) A Legend in...well ya'll know.

The DJ who stands out most in my mind is Brother John St. John. He would say "I'm the Brother who plays Rock-n-Roll."

This was in the early and mid-1980's.

He was very smooth, deep-voiced and personable.

During the week he pulled 7pm - Midnight at WIMZ and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons he was on WQUT between 2pm - 7pm.

I heard he landed a job in NYC, became an PD and then GM.

Super nice guy and very smooth.

I remember "Mark in the Morning on 'QUT while in high school. Somewhere round 1980. Mark Esberg I think he went by. I'm now hitting my head with a hammer trying to remember the names at WETB and WJSO. Daddy-O
is the only one I can think of.
