He was pretty much toast by '76. He was Stern and Imus and all that from the late '50s to the late '60s. When he returned from retirement in the early 70s he was lost and was just re-cycling himself
Edited by tripton99 on 08/16/05 03:50 AM.

Re: 93/KHJ vs. The Big 610

I think we're getting two eras mixed up here. Clearly KHJ was the winner during the Drake era, but by December '73 Drake, Morgan and Steele were all gone. While some good talent passed through KHJ post-'73, so did several PDs as it gradually declined due to competition. On the other paw, KFRC's best days were post-'73 with DDR, Osh., and consistency in general that KHJ no longer had. In the 70s, KFRC was THE station that was winning awards and was being copied all across the country.

what are your thoughts on other retired stations

All time best SF?

Just to rattle the cage a bit.........
For those over 50.......KNBR in the early 60's.
My sister and I doing Saturday nite dishes listening to "Dancin' with Anson" and the other Big Band shows LIVE from the "Top of the Mark", etc.
Currently, KSFO. Radio that Matters.

I'm a huge fan of Bobby Ocean and Dr Don. Ask, Osh he'd
tell you that Steele and Morgan were the best 1-2
punch in top 40 radio history.

Re: 93/KHJ vs. The Big 610 (Don Sherwood)

Sherwood was a legend who was ahead of his time.

> Hey Collins, calm down. I was giving my opinion, as are YOU. I grew up in LA in the 60s, so I'm very familiar with the Real Don Steele and Robert W. Morgan. You're absolutely right - KFRC never had a tandem drive duo to compare to RDS or RWM. I've spent a fair amount of time the last few years listening to airchecks of those two talents. But as others have already pointed out, Don Rose, Bobby Ocean, Bill Lee (to name a few) were great personalities. And (obviously) a radio station is much more than it's drive time DJs. When I moved to SF in 73, I was impressed by the sound of KFRC - better (more "hip") music selection, less "teeny bopper" oriented than KHJ, etc. The Big 610 renewed my interest in Top 40 radio, which I had given up on in LA for KMET, KLOS, etc. While KFRC thrived in the late 70s and into the 80s (post-Drake), KHJ went down the toilet, becoming "Car Radio," and finally going Country. As for who I am - I'm a radio listener and longtime fan - not a radio professional as you probably are. But last time I checked PDs don't program their stations so their radio professional buddies will be impressed, but to attract everyday listeners.
