I'll even go deeper here with this.
There was a time when Radio-Info just started out and my group was called the Metro New York Dance Radio Coalition, when the late Doug Fleming who created this board would post in here, when Brett (Z88.9) was on WDBK, when John Parker was...and still IS John Parker
that I had a very STAUNCH opinion similar to Gregg whereas all I wanted was current dance. I used to hear Energy 108 in Toronto back then and would base my thoughts on that station. So, when WKTU launched in New York back in 1996, even though I "fought" for it I wasn't too happy about it because there were more oldies and recurrents than new dance.
I've used to argue about that ad nauseum in here and on other boards. I felt 'KTU could have done more for currents back then. But my constant bickering about it caused more issues than helped. So when 'KTU tweaked format in '06, we fought again for another dance station and then came Pulse 87 which might have still existed if it weren't for the financial problems....though there probably would have been financial problems down the road because of the poor signal and location with barely any advertising. A lot has happened since the Pulse demise and Party FM's brief moment on 87.7 where I saw what happened with our community along with the bitter anguish of many fans. Right then I KNEW I had to change my thinking.
Would I still want a mainly current based dance station with few recurrents? Of course
. But at the same time I also want a lasting "product", not something that is just considered "cyclical" but can have lasting "legs" such as CHR, R&B, country, rock (although that as of late is "debatable"). And yeah, the tastes are changing whereas those on the R&B/hip-hop side don't want to just rap/sing about the "hood" or other street anomalies; rather to just have fun! And if dance traditional producers such as David Guetta, Benny Benassi, Wolfgang Gartner want to pair up with rhythmic brands such as Rihanna, T-Pain and Will.I.Am and produce dance tracks, then it is a great thing because on the rhythmic side, you have STRONG brand names. And if that can pick up the "core" names such as Wynter Gordon, Alexis Jordan, Sylvia Tosun, Jeremy Carr and come up with something HUGE in terms of "uptempo", then that's what should happen. I am fully supportive of this.
Change is happening now, whether you realize it or not. It may not be as you would like it to be, but as a dance fan...at the very least you should be "acceptant" of it, if not embrace it outright.
Just telling it as it is. No diss, no confrontation.
