Big Change Needed at WCVO (104.9 the River)

Oh, for the love of Pete. Whoever you are "marketmyradio" get off of Dan Bughmans butt. I have been doing this a LONG time in a lot of MAJOR markets and Baughman is the best GM I have ever worked for.

Man, you SEEM to think that you are connected but you get bits and pieces and state them as fact.

I have been here for 5 years and this place has turned from a laughing stock into a respected radio station.
Listen to the stopsets...REAL, honest to goodness commercials(the very same ones you here on Saga and CC stations).

Also, The River is a lifeline to a LOT of people. God uses this station to help people that are hurting. I talk with people every day that tell me just that. We CONNECT. Is there another station in Columbus that will tell you that there IS a way out of your addiction, your pain, your situation? The answer is Jesus Christ (believe me, after 15 years of addiction I know that to be a fact) and we are not ashamed to say it.

So maybe we are not perfect, but Jesus said it when they were ready to stone Mary who was caught in adultry "He who is without sin throw the 1st stone".

They all walked away...

Jake

Hey Mark!

Man, it's been a long road. Remember Roberta Alt? We got married(and divorced) and had a son Benjamin and he turns 16 on Friday! I hope that you are doing well. Things for me are really good. 5 1/2 years off the coke and booze makes life a lot better.

Jake

Jake, it's good to see you here. I was wondering if you were aware of this discussion that was going on. Thanks for giving your inside point of view. This was looking rather one sided for a while. Good to know you are happy with the way The River is doing things. They certainly have a worth while mission before them, and yes I listen (online) although just in the afternoons ;)

forgiveness/throwing stones is a completely separate issue. you can forgive someone or something yet still ask for a change to be made. if the river is leading people into spirituality much like a pastor leads his church, then i think it's safe to say that if a pastor did some things that were wrong, one would forgive him much like one can forgive the river for their mistakes. however, if the pastor continued to mislead his congregation, then i would ask that he reconsider his position in the church. the river management continues to mislead and deceive listeners. just because the river is a christian radio station doesn't give management the right to go hide under that umbrella. it's an insult to listeners.

It's so strange..."decieve listeners". Since when does CC or Saga have to explain to listeners when it makes a programing decission? So Swander does not work here any more...Did CC explain when Cannon got let go after all those years? Where are we misleading? So we don't tell people that Tracy s VT'd? Big deal. Man, you are using a whole different ruler to measure what we do just because of the format we are in. It all comes down to this(IMHO)...You have some kind of hard on for the station and Baughman...I say get over it. Or better yet take it to Dan. He actually will meet with you and listen to what you have to say (try that with some other GM's in he market).

By the way...When can I listen to you guys on the air? I would love to hear you...maybe I could brrow a bit or 2(like Chris Davis says "if you steal from me, you've stolen twice".

I am on from 3-7 weekdays...Borrow away.

Jake

If it's true that management at The River asks Tracy to say things like "I was at Sharon Woods yesterday..." then YES, that is deceptive.

I guess then that EVERY station that has someone VT for them is deceptive...I believe that people that VT are supposed to sound "local".

Ok, I can see that arguing is a moot point. :-\ So I am done.

Jake

Jake.. this is Jon D.... i dont know if you remember me, but I use to work at the station in zanesville for about 2 years (02-04).. then i left for Indiana to get married. i am still in the business doing some onair but mainly production in south bend at the ccm station (WFRN).

It is great to see you sticking up for the River. You are as true and dedicated now as you were 3 years ago. I side with you... Baughman is truely a great man and if I was able to, I would accept a position working under him in a heart beat.

Heres my opinion(to everyone else)... Everyone has something to say about everything, which is fine. If you dont agree with Dan Baughmans business practices, thats fine too. But dont slam someone if you have never done their job and done it better than them. Dan is a great guy doing what he believes is right for the community, listeners and his staff. So he has Tracy VT from Florida, and shes told to sound local... so what? Wouldnt you? and who is that REALLY hurting? Unless you are on life support because of it... I would say, its not that big of a problem. thats all i have to say.. I have spots to go produce.

i worked for some great gm's and some pretty mediocre ones in my days. jake has worked for even more so i respect his opinion regarding his boss because if he didn't have something good to say he publicly wouldn't have said anything at all. the one thing i know for sure is no matter how good a job someone is doing, it could always be done better. the radio station under discussion here is far superior in its present incarnation than anything its been previously. they're not doing anything anyone else isn't doing. there's another thread going on here about what i miss: i miss all local personalities covering the airshifts 24/7 but unfortunately that's not the reality of radio today.

in a personal note to jd: glad to hear your life is on track. you and roberta were two of countless great people i enjoyed working with over the years in that awful building at broad and young. you can be nostalgic of the building now. but i'll never forget tip carpenter telling me the whole thing was wrong from the day they put it up. and truer words were never spoken

The point here is not to be doing what everyone else is doing. If the other stations want to mislead their listeners, staff and community then that's fine. I guess some of us just hold or held the River to a higher standard given what they're about.

Dan Baughman has taken that station from what it was to the River and he's done a great job at rebranding WCVO. However, a good leader must also realize when it's time to step down--when the bottom line has become more important than the mission--when back door deals and back door promises mean more than collaborative efforts among staff, then it's time to step aside.

call it deception if you want. it's radio. there was once a day when baseball play by play broadcasts were recreations from teletype reports. radio is a theater of the mind.
However, a good leader must also realize when it's time to step down--
this idealism needs to be tempered with a bit of reality. few leaders good or otherwise head for the door voluntarily. aside from those retiring due to age or resigning for a new position, most must be shown to the door and told what not to let it do.

Well, this has been interesting. A little heartbreaking as well. Since I am (was) personally involved, just let me say this: God's plan moved forward regardless of a lie told by a prostitute (read the story of Rahab). I'm not justifying playing fast an loose with the truth. But, as long as God has a plan for WCVO, no man, regardless of his morals or integrity, will be able to stop it. When God's plan for WCVO is complete, no man will be able to save it.

My reputation will survive any lies that were told to me or about me. I'm sure the station will survive the weaknesses of men.

OK, I'm going back into "lurk" mode.

Dan

Hey Dan,

Interesting that you would bring this to a public forum. I am willing to call you on your statement that "lies were told about you".
Do you REALLY want to go there? Best to leave it alone.

Jake

Jake, I didn't bring this into the forum. I responded. Yes, lies were told about me. You can call me on it if you like, but make sure of the ground you're standing on.

You honestly don't want to start looking like a jackass by posting stuff like this, do you?

Hey Hollis,

Dan and I have both decided that this is not the place for this type of discussion. We have taken care of it the way it's supposed to be taken care of. You'll see no more posts from either one of us on this subject.

Jake "jackass" :-\ Sommers

The last few posts is exactly why there needs to be a change at the River. The fact that Mr. Swander talks about lying going on there and Mr. Sommers is defensive about it, shows that there is deception going on there and it's time for the Board to pay attention to posts like this and figure out where it's coming from--it seems to be management.

dan and jake have settled their differences between themselves. i always considered both to be good guys so i'm glad to hear that. this entire thread has taken on a rather testy unchristianlike tone. and dan is right that mere mortals will not decide the ultimate fate of 104.9
