Big Change Needed at WCVO (104.9 the River)

If you want to hear Dan on the radio every morning, tune in WLOH. He now does my traffic (from Metro) and sounds GREAT! Their loss is my gain.

Yes, Jake and I have settled this matter privately. We decided on cream pies at 30 paces. As you might expect, Jake cheated and had 2 Little Debbies hidden under his old 92X T-shirt. Believe me, nothing's worse than an unexpected Nutty Buddy to the forehead! Jake and I are, and will remain friends and brothers in Christ. Sometimes our old sin natures rear their ugly heads. It reminds me of how thankful I am that we are saved by grace, and nothing that we do.

If there's some concern about upper management at The River, I suggest you contact a board member and take it up with them. It's apparent that a couple of you are at least close to the inside and would know who some of the board members are. But, I'll bet a dollar to Jake's Little Debbies that none of them read this board, so nothing good can come of any more discussion about it here.

Since this is partly about me, I feel like I have the right to ask you to just let it go... right after you read the nce things Mr. Bohach said about me! Seriously, If I can get past it, anybody else can, too. I'm not saying I have, but I am trying. Paul said, "I put the past behind me and move forward to what lies ahead." I apologize for the comment about being lied to and about. This was not the place for that.

If you believe in the validity of a radio ministry, pray for the people at The River. All of them... even upper management. Pray for the on-air staff as they have daily contact with hurting people who need to know that there is hope. As long as I'm asking, pray for me, too. This has not been an easy thing for me to get over. That said... I'm going back and read Mark Bohach's post again!

KURT WALLACE

So how's the new PD settling in? Kurt's a good guy. He's a great talent as well.

Although I was confused to see that he had left the Twin Cities after dropping by KTIS, using the restroom and grabbing a snack.

Hey Hollis,

Dan and I have both decided that this is not the place for this type of discussion. We have taken care of it the way it's supposed to be taken care of. You'll see no more posts from either one of us on this subject.

Jake "jackass" :-\ Sommers

Okay. Sorry for my comment. Please forgive ol' Hollis for butting in.

as someone who spent 3 years as a volunteer and had a weekly overnight airshift when cvo was a full service station, let me say that i agree with dan and jake's call to PRAY FOR and SUPPORT the ministry of WCVO. you don't have to agree with the format style, you don't have to agree with the management style. what we are called as CHristians to do is to support the ministry and to let the ministry be a credible witness and testimony to the calling of the station--namely to reach hurting people with the GOOD NEWS that JESUS is a LIFECHANGER. its time to put this thread to rest. we are not called to throw stones at each other, because all of us are guilty EQUALLY of sinning.--david5258
ps--those of you who have concerns about the mannagement style of the station, CALL WCVO to schedule an appointment with DAN B. He will take the time to listen.

I agree. Let's pray and see what God has for this station.

Jake, you are a great example of how Jesus can change a life. Christian, family man, loving husband, entrepreneur...did you ever think these words would describe you? Praise God!

"Amazing Grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found. I was blind, but now I see."

One more reminder for all of us from the words of Jesus..."I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me, and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing," John 15:5 (NIV)

Jake,

How come you guys don't light up the Cross on your tower anymore? That was awesome when I was a kid to see it out the window at night.

Thanks!

Wow! How much has changed since I worked across the way at the "U"... Didn't know the success of 104.9 was so hot and debated.... I just see from the ratings side, one of the most successful Christian Adult Hit/AC oulets in the country... But, you guys seem to be inside the Columbus loop and just north and east of it (where 'CVO is)... What happen to "Tate" and who's there, now??? "Skipper T."Spence WYIR-FM Evansville :-\

OK... I go to the site (have not seen it in a year or two)... Todd S. is my old Way-Fm intern, from his days at Cedarville U. (College, then)... Great guy and I was told to hire him across town when we were building "U" and then I was told I couldn't...?????? Well, I am glad he got the chance at Way-Fort Myers and then starting the FM up the road from Columbus.. Now at 'CVO.... Way to go, Todd! ;)

Skip,

Tate went to INO Records in Nashville about two months ago. He seems to be enjoying the other side of the industry.

I knew I'd end up in Columbus one day (I just had to go through Florida, Columbus and Cleveland first).

(To answer another post) The lit up cross on our tower was turned off about a year or so ago. From what I hear, it annoyed more people than it did good.

Good to hear from you, Skip...todd

I can image it would get expensive to have the cross lit 24/7 365... as big and noticable as it was up on the tower... you could see it from literally miles away.. and that thing has to be HUGE on the ground. Can you imagine how many (and big) the bulbs have to be... plus since it was mounted at the very top of the tower, all the maintenance that would have to be done, and maybe some kind of license to have to have it (?).... that thing didn't take care of its self, whenever a set of bulbs went out, you have to pay someone to climb up there and change them. thats a long way to climb for a few light bulbs. gets pricey after a while.

plus like todd said... people complain.

10 years ago there was a lit "tower cross" maybe 50-60 miles east of Columbus on I-70. Is that one still there?

WCVO is going to move their tower I think once they can get a CP and a great place to place it so the cross will be a thing of the past soon I am sure as the FCC does not permit such items on towers now -- including the classic lettering that WBNS has on their tower.

Oh, for the love of Pete. Whoever you are "marketmyradio" get off of Dan Bughmans butt. I have been doing this a LONG time in a lot of MAJOR markets and Baughman is the best GM I have ever worked for.

Man, you SEEM to think that you are connected but you get bits and pieces and state them as fact.

I have been here for 5 years and this place has turned from a laughing stock into a respected radio station.
Listen to the stopsets...REAL, honest to goodness commercials(the very same ones you here on Saga and CC stations).

It has been a while since I have looked at this original post by Jake. I have prayed about it for a couple of weeks and felt that I needed to reply to this post. I debated whether to send this to Jake personally or to simply reply. I choose to reply because he was so public in your comments. I want others to maybe stop and think about "Christian" radio and where it is today.

As hard as Christian Radio tries to be like secular radio, it is honestly different. There is a different standard held to Christian stations by its listeners because you are a Christian station. I don't think that people care that Tracy VT's her segments as much as the fact that she tries to sound like she is living here when she is in Florida. Call it what you want but that is deceptive, and although done routinely on secular stations, shouldn't we be honest?

Jake, I want you to consider, really stop and think about what you said here. Yes, I suppose to many WCVO was a laughing stock and "Dan" has changed everything to make it glorious. This comment makes me angry for a couple of reasons:

#1 If you have gone from "laughing stock" to "respected radio" is is ONLY because God has allowed it. Yes, I believe that Dan has done many great things at the river, but it is because of the Lord that you are where you are. I, personally, think that this "popularity" is clouding your judgement. I have read your posts on here and I am saddend by them.

#2 You need to stop and consider those who have gone before you that PUSHED!!! the envelope -- to the point of nearly being fired --who laid the groundwork on which you so proudly stand. How do I know? I was there. I watched for over 10 years the blood, sweat, tears and the extremely hard work my husband and others put into that station for PENNIES per hour. There were a few GREAT men who kept pushing for change at the station. The countless board meetings and abrasive remarks from the members and leadership--even threats of violence by listeners who couldn't understand the change.

I want to remind you that it was these same great men who TRAINED Dan to run a board in the wee hours on Saturday mornings. I personally think that anyone who is glad to see the river where it is should thank these GENTLEMEN for the sacrifice. They did not do this for our thanks, it was done for the Lord. However, your comments make them sound stupid and incompetent. I am sure that Dan remembers the spiritual and working conditions of the station at the time that God shook the grounds loose.

Have you stopped to think of the sacrifice these people made to bring WCVO to the place that Dan could do the work that he is doing?
I RESENT it being called a laughing stock. Yes, I guess in the world of radio, it was something to laugh at, but nobody except this finely tuned, GODLY group will ever know the price that was paid. Maybe you should respect that instead of calling it a laughing stock.

I am also quite certain that Dan can handle his own defense. Dan, at least in the past, was a good man, honest, decent and spiritually willing to do the shifts that no-body wanted and without complaint. He was humble and kind. I have not had the pleasure of seeing Dan in some time now, but I doubt that he is full of fluff and stuff. I am also certain that he realizes that being at the top of the heap, you are going to have critics. In the world of radio, it is full of critics..so what?

I know that you know radio so much better than most on this site because of your MAJOR MARKET career. However, my husband and I have lived this MINISTRY for 20 years and have seen a lot of good people get sucked up in the "popularity" of it all and it really has never ended well for those people. We are also aware of the internal fight that goes on with keeping the eyes glued on the Lord while being earthly good to others. As you know, ratings and numbers can plummet in a heartbeat.

I know you and I believe that you love the Lord. I don't mean this to be anything more than a "hey man, stop and think before you speak". If I had not known you when I read your post I would have thought you were pompous and full of yourself. I doubt that is how you want to be perceived.

God bless you, Jake.

Great letter! The Buckinghams knew, first hand of where WCVO was and where it is today.... All of us who worked in Columbus Christian Radio loved the slow steady efforts of guys and gals like Dan, Michael B., Tate and all who lived on the threats of the old school and still brought a station into the maketplace with professional approaches, without losing the mission.. Actually fine tuning the mission.. I was honored to be across the street from those who toiled through the change.. "Well Done, Thy Faithfull Servants" at 104.9.... :)

There HAVE been some great and Godly people who went through CVO who worked for change before they had their "blossoming."

But that still doesn't change the fact that despite their devotion and efforts, the place was still a laughing stock in the eyes of the mainstream community. Devotion or not, until the results are seen on the surface, the devotion of the faithful doesn't mean much to a society who judges based on results.

I don't believe Jake was insulting the devotion, faithfulness or gifts of those who helped bring the place up. I took it as him simply referencing the way outsiders viewed the place. I saw nothing pompous about it. He was just stating popular, factual perception. It's no reflection on the hearts of those involved. Referencing the place's mainstream reputation accurately doesn't mean Jake was behaving like a jerk, in my opinion.

I know Jake just as you do. And it didn't even enter my mind that he was acting pompous. Maybe I missed something.

Even so, the tone of your post is a razor's edge in proximity to sounding as if you actually know something of the deepest motivations Mr. Jake's heart. It comes strikingly close (without actually doing it) to accusing him of the sin of pride.

I'd say you, me and everyone else here should have all just shut our mouths before the thread even got this far. I believe your post was just as inappropriate as Jakes in nature. The fact that Jake posted publicly is no justification for you or I or anyone to return fire in public. If we are to get technical about it, spiritually speaking your post was one best left to a private e-mail.

Behindthelines:

I am quite sorry that I have offended you. Although I know Jake, you are right, I don't know Jakes heart, only the perception of the post.

Again, my apologies.

Another angle.... No matter how good any Christian format sounds in comparison to the mainstream counterpart, or how high in the ratings it places, the mainstream will mock it and make fun of it (to a large degree)... That's the OFFENSE of THE GOSPEL... ;)

hello Mr. Skip!

Thank you for your posts. You are so right, mocking is a total part of the diet of those in Christian media :) I meant to say something on the last post, but I felt badly that I offended someone and I got side tracked. Michael has said that he has seen you in Nashville. Now that I am a mom, our little Ryleigh takes the majority of time and I am not able to travel like I use to.

You know, I hope everyone knows that I have a total soft spot for WCVO. I would have never met my AWESOME husband of 17 years without going to the station. Also, it was because of our time there that our selfless birthmother connected with us -- hence giving us a beautiful beautiful daughter. It was a Total God thing!

How is Ellen? I hear that you are in Indiana? Again, you laid the ground work here at the U and we don't forget your time here. We are appreciative. Did you hear?? You can't make a listener supported Christian rock station work? God continues to prove the mockers (Christian and secular) that he rocks! :)
