Big changes at Asheville's WQNQ Star 104.3!

WFBC covers Asheville fairly well (HD signal in some places is better than analog), was trying to convince Intercom to change the WSPA translator (W249AR) to WFBC. No luck on that.

After the move by WOXL, it was only a matter of time.

Now when is Asheville going to get a GOOD radio station? Someone take Glenn Beck and Rush and everything else OFF WMXF and put Sinatra, Andy Williams and Michael Buble BACK. Hendersonville stations don't count because not everyone who likes that music is IN Hendersonville.

All I can say that it's about time!

Speaking of WQNQ, is there still plans to upgrade the signal? I understood that was the reason that sister station WBBQ in Augusta had downgraded it signal several years ago so that WQNQ could upgrade.

BTW: I'm listening to the stream right now and had heard CJ tease about a big announcement at 6 AM tomorrow. Is that when they officially launch the new format?

I'm also heard some leftover Hot AC titles that need to be dumped if they are serious about switching to CHR (i.e. Edwin McCain "These are The Moments" is one).

Robyn

Does Valentine fit on a CHR station? Seems more AC/Hot AC'ish to me.

Maybe Elvis Duran or Ace & TJ would be better if something local can't be assembled for the morning, which isn't likely.

I wouldn't be surprised if they announce a new morning show or something.

First, hope you're doing well, Robyn! From my interpretation of FCC filings, it appears this upgrade of WQNQ and downgrade of WBBQ took place around December 2003 when WQNQ moved COL from Old Fort to Fletcher, in order to get a better signal into Asheville. Simultaneously, 99.9 WKSF changed COL from Asheville to Old Fort. Also, this is when WQNQ changed from simulcasting Classic Rock 104.9 WQNS and went to the Hot AC format that just got flipped.

Valentine is gone and replaced with Josh and Sue.

Sue is top notch, congratulations to her. Ironically, she was released last year from Clear Channel in Greenville, SC.

I don't know what they're doing with afternoons. Ryan Seacrest is still on.

WOW!!! Kinda ironic that they launched a CHR format... It was 26 years ago almost to the very date that another CHR was born, but later they put their boots on and went country as Kiss Country... CC1

Bruce did an amazing job on that KISS/WISE site. Nice work. What memories.

:D I loved listening to those airchecks. It brought back great memories of a rockin hits radio station that covered everywhere from the tower of power on top of Mt. Pisgah. It is sad that it takes two or three chr stations to cover the same area... b93, electric and now star 104.3. After all, Kiss' top of the hour id was Asheville, Greenville Spartanburg, Anderson...

Kiss had such a wide playlist, great on air talent, made the best use of jingles, took and actually played requests, and was so not cookie cutter. Not to mention, great community involvement, the van was out everywhere doing live remotes, and doing pep rallys at area high schools. 94Z is the only other station that comes close in my book.

Kiss question: Who did the top of the hour Maximum Power id? I also seem to remember WKSF using the hot kiss top of the hour id for a brief period.. "all hits, all the time, wksf... "

Back to Star, it seems like they had a much larger coverage area when they were Delightful 104/Mix104.3 and the tower was located on Wildcat Mtn. The signal could get to E.Asheville but didn't cover the metro. It could however come in loud and clear from Black Mountain all the way to the Wilkesboros and Taylorsville without any problem.

I miss Kiss Fm...

I'd like to see 99.9 & 104.3 switch freqencies.
Star 99.9 & Kiss Country 104.3 OR better yet, 99.9 Kiss FM & Star Country 104.3.

a CHR format on 99.9 could easily compete with B93.7 in Upstate SC & Electric 94.9 in the Tri-Cities.

It would keep the country format in Asheville (maybe even also Simulcast on 104.9 WQNS)
while it would also reduce overlap with sisters WESC & WSSL.

It makes sense to me, there's WAY too many country choices here.

WNC40......Joe Van Riper(years ago at WBT) did most of those sweepers. Len Goldberg(Z100 NY) did a few.

I can't understand why both 93.7 & 98.9 don't apply for a booster for their main signals into Asheville.
Asheville is clearly within the protected 60 dbu contour for both stations.
