musical formats

That depends on the generation in which the parents were born... :D
I have been a music fan for many years - I do not know what you mean by "active rock".
Is that another name for "alternative"?

Active rock is merely a politically correct name for heavy metal, which is what WAAF is. WAAF is listed in the trades as "active rock." WBCN, which is still listed as alternative rock, is really another metal station in reality.

Oh. I always thought that metal was called "metal"... ;D

You also think hip hop is called "rap". ;D

Notice how "Top 40" is now CHR-M (Mainstream) and CHR-R (Rhythmic). AC is now "Hot AC" (WBMX) and "AC" (WMJX)? Music is an ever expanding universe.

But Metal evolved into something angry and awful that got labeled "Active Rock". WGIR even tried using it as the station handle for a month or so. Active rock set alternative rock radio ('FNX) back by many years in the late 90's when the two categories became indistinguishable. Alt radio is finally palatable again, but no one's listening now.

To be more specific, "Active Rock" is a male-oriented hard rock attitude format which includes heavy metal, mainstream hard rock, some of the harder "alternative" rock, and some classic hard rock.
