Big FM Skips on June 11 Afternoon

I noticed while driving around Friday afternoon that there was interference on numerous FM stations. It got a bit annoying until I realized I was getting stations from many hundreds of miles away. I was in New Hampshire.

One local station I like is Soft AC 101.5 WWLK in Meredith NH. But it kept battling with another AC station. On my car radio, I saw "101.5 FM WLYF." That's in Miami.

Then I tried listening to 100.9 WYNZ in Westbrook-Portland ME. But I heard Contemporary Christian music, not classic hits. On my car radio, I saw "Way-FM." That must be WAYA in Ridgeville, SC, near Charleston.

Both distant stations are on the Atlantic, so those signals traveled across the ocean to New Hampshire. Other frequencies had trouble but their call letters didn't appear on my car radio.

Jeff Lehmann (jlehmann here) had 107.7+ MUF for a while out of MA to IL, IN, etc.

Yesterday was definitely the best day so far for ES here in MA. It started out in the morning with strong signals from FL, GA, AL, etc. Then round 2 in the evening was even better with tons of IL, IN, OH, MI, MO, KS, IA… Let’s hope for more today!

I was driving in Western Mass. and Vermont along I-91 between 10 a.m. and noon and heard a lot of hash all over the stations I was trying to listen to on 88.1, 95.3 and 96.3 but, stupidly, did not consider the possibility that it might be ES. Instead I switched over to SiriusXM, which of course was crystal-clear. I'll be kicking myself for a long time for not doing a bandscan instead.

Yes, pretty sure you had Es there too. As a DXer, hearing 'hash all over stations' amuses me, at least when I'm driving alone. Then when I realize it's Es to the top of the band, it's pull-over time IMO. Or if I'm still in the Ellensburg area, find a quiet hiking trailhead and park. One of the best Es openings in years happened last July, and I was hiking all alone in the Lost Lake / Manastash Lake area, about 19 mi W of town. I had intended on going up to the top of the ridge to see the views, and thankfully had my radio on my too. Turned it on at a curve in the trail where the SE horizon opens up. Was interested in the country station I was hearing on 107.9, then realized the 94.1 I was also hearing was Albuquerque. All heck broke loose 10 minutes after that, locals getting wiped out and some channels had 3 to 4 stations mixing. Incredible opening. I still believe my 4,800 foot elevation helped plus the wide horizon at that one point on the trail, straight to the direction my DX was coming from. NM, TX, CO, OK, etc.
