Big Hits to return on 104.3

Just in case they decide to switch, I set up a stream with an archive. If you want to listen in this afternoon to see if 104.3 does change, just send me a PM.

I am actually listening to it myself (mostly because I am a radio junky who likes to hear format changes)... I've never listened to this much 'smooth jazz' in my entire life.

Side note: I'd like smooth jazz better if it was more Jazz and less vocals.

Big hits "B104.3" has returned as of 12:00 noon.

First song was "Welcome Back"

WZJA has not updated their website yet, still lists as Smooth Jazz 103.5/104.3 (just tuned over to 103.5 they still have the Smooth Jazz format including the old liners still going with the 104.3 ident)

I worked at a station that had one of those "listener advisory boards".  If you weren't in the target demo, your email was ignored.  The fact that most of the emails came from outside the station's perceived demo seemed to be lost on programmers.  But, I digress.

Fascinating digression, though.  That could explain a lot, especially if it was a Columbus station, and double-especially if it was a big signal.

Here is the deal.

107.9 as Hot AC will help with the overall premise of a COMBO SELL. You buy Sunny and we throw Mix in for free! Plus it helps lock up the Contemporary Audience in a growing area such as Sunbury - Westerville - etc.

104.3 will eventually have a decent city grade signal, and throwing Classic Hits on there is only a way to help Sunny! It helps draw the women off a station such as Brew. Will it do well on its own at its new home, maybe...but again, I doubt it.

Smooth Jazz makes money (and it runs cheap). The station actually puts Cash-Flow in the building, and thats something that Saga likes to see. They are an amazing operation, but when Sunny is the cash cow, you need to suppliment it if you can.

They basically had four (and yes, they can buy a fifth) signals with one clear winner. They needed to do something, you had a smooth jazz combo doing mediocre, and a classic hits that was a tax write off.

What they needed to do, haven't done, and still need to do (but probably never will) is quit trying to play the game with these silly little fringe Class A signals that can't be heard decently in many parts of the market and get some real power behind them. They should have picked up 96.3 and 95.5 when they had the chance.

Amen. Of course, for all I know they made a big effort to do so, and couldn't because of money, lawyers, or even personality issues or vendettas or politics...whatever. Maybe someone knows and will speak.

I couldn't agree with you more! Those two sticks would have been great to add to the Saga stable.

Only two small problems at the time the deal went down.

102.5 had technically not been approved yet. This caused everything to go into limbo and Saga would have been forced to dump 107.1, 104.3, 107.9 and/or 103.5 immediately. The buying market would have been restricted to NABCO who really didn't want any more fringe Class A signals at the time and EMF. They would have had to shopped out to different buyers and it could have become a hassle.

Other big problem at the time was the fact that Wilks had made a much bigger deal come into the picture. They offered CBS a deal (we pick up these three markets for a solid price) instead of cherry picking two individual markets.

Remember NABCO and Saga were both in the bidding wars on these markets, but WILKS offered a much shinier and prettier deal on the table.

104.3 has the very worst "rim shot" signal into downtown Columbus. It is even worse then WVKO-FM radio.
I'm surprised Saga would even bother to move "Classic Hits" over to such a weak signal. But then this is
Saga and not Clear Channel Columbus making the move. That said, I do admire them for dropping the Jazz simulcast and giving Columbus another format option. Hope they can have the signal upgrade on in the next year or so.

Very interesting observations! Too bad it worked out that way. That said, maybe Wilks hasn't turned out to be the disaster many predicted, at least as far as keeping LVQ healthy.

On a different note, I'm hearing liners of "Big Hits--B104.3". Is there a calls swap in the making (moving WODB to 104.3)?

Anyone else notice the Stereo carrier missing from 104.3 since this afternoon? Not even a flicker in the car near Hilliard. Is this CD101 syndrome?

Your not the only one noticing this. They did have stereo earler today when the flip happened. (I was listening here) I just checked and 104.3 is in mono.

In other news, 103.5 still thinks it has a 'sister' at 104.3 playing Smooth Jazz.

The new Big Hits B104.3 website is up. Webstream not up yet but I am sure SAGA will have one of those up in anyday.

Considering SAGA ran 104.3/103.5 as a simlucast... I wonder if their running one of them out a closet now.

Will they place on air talent in that closet? If they do, my jaw will drop.

Denny Shaffer of http://www.dennyradio.com used to do his WCWA Toledo show out of the closet in his house
in Atlanta, Georgia. Now, he is using some kind of production studio but it has been tried before.

Dont know if they are running it in a closet, but the web site lists an air staff

I can't pick up 104.3. I've a better chance to pick up Eagle 93.7 and some sort of country music station on 94.3 FM, than Big Hits 104.3.

I just viewed the "airstaff" page of their website....their new morning guy was the old 107.9's night tracker.
Look, I think this entire thread is a bit overwrought. With a better signal and years to establish a beach-head, Oldies on 107.9 never was a player...always relegated to a niche market, shrinking annually. The years of flogging crisp 40 year-old tunes 24/7 are past for this market. Putting this near-death format on a lesser signal is barely keeping the patient alive...
Maybe they have a contract with the guy in Youngstown and they are compelled to run his show through a date certain...then pull the plug.

We both live downtown. I can pick barely pick up 104.3 and then with a very weak signal. Don't expect them to have any listeners in the downtown Columbus area. I can pick them up after struggling with the antenna and radio, ect.
Heck, I get the LPFM radio station, WCRX-LP better downtown then 104.3 FM. The WCRX-LP tower is about ten miles from here.

Why would they want to put BIG HITS on this frequency anyway?
