Big Jay Sorenson - WJRZ

BTW, I made an ass out of myself from Dan Finn because I had no idea who he was, and he just laughed it off. Taught me an important lesson. And Hook, you were 10 feet away at the time.

The hell they are, yes. WRAT is #1 men 18-34.

In fact, the hell they are, this is their 2nd straight book #1 men 18-34.

Spring '06, the hell they are, they had double digits in that demo. Middays had a 24-something.

I needed your lack of knowledge tonight...that really made me laugh.

If they fired people over ratings then explain how the jocks at the Rat have kept there jobs for so long?

WRAT is #1 men 18-34, that's how.

Does that surprise you? What station do you think would be #1 with that demo in this market? The Hawk? One of the many "Soft Rock" stations? No one else comes in loud and clear in pretty much all of Monmouth/Ocean and makes this audience their top priority, so it should come as little surprise that they are #1 with Males 18-34.

In my opinion, they may want to appeal to this audience a bit more by playing Korn, Tool, System Of A Down, Mudvayne, Sevendust, and other acts that are popular with this demo that they seldom ever play. A little less of the same old Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd (there's no denying that they're great bands, but they can burn out on you) and a little more of the bands above and some deeper cuts would do The Rat good. I think they are definitely capable of better than a 2.2 overall, especially given their competition (or lack thereof).

Big Jay
Annoy, annoy, annoy!!! I can't possably tell you how many times I would change the dial away from my favorite station when Jay would again be Jay!
His attempts at being funny failed 98% of the time. The WednesJay, TuesJay thing got old so long ago.
I believe he most definately annoyed many of the on-air people he dealt with from traffic (definately) to Anita. Even his constant interrupting..............
4doggonereal I'm glad he's gone.

I'll be the judge of that, thank you. :)

Who is this guy (Freshface and ForkedRiver...) that keeps weining about Jay Sorensen?

Someone has a serious axe to grind. Please see a therapist.

Good luck to Jay Sorensen on his next gig.

Anita,
You are beautiful. but... The definately I referred to was written ambiguously.
I was referring to definately annoying the trafffic people.

I would have to say being my first posts that there are very different end of the spectrum comments circulating about my old man...some are dead on and some are way off...i guess everyones entitled to there opinion as my father has ALWAYS taught me, but i think its fair to say that instead of bashing him, try bashing the stations that keep letting obvious talent slip away cause they are too chicken **** to step up to the plate when its time to shell out the big bucks...stations have suffered because of this and hopefully so will his last station

Wow, you posted on your own thread to make 5000 views to say you had 5000 views. Now you're bringing up a dead thread just to bump it to the top and yet again mention how many views you have. Glad to see you traded a microphone for a keyboard to feed your ego!

I guess the humor in these postings escapes you. It's all a hoot..lighten up. When you're unemployed everyone is humbled
By the way, my name is spelled SorensEn, unlike the first post that keeps spelling it wrong after what is it now? 5500?
Spend your time discussing RADIO stuff on this forum. THAT is much more entertaining a timely. I'll adhere to that as well. Fair?

BigJay, greetings from the Hoosier state. Do the names Mark Sheppard and Lee Tobin sound familiar? Yeah, they owe me money, too. Just keep this in mind: non illigitamus carborundum. Or quando omni flunkus moriati.
Take care, and I'm happy to keep your thread alive.......

HIya.
Yeah..Levize is the ops guy at some greatest hits of the 60's and 70's thing in some cornfield in..where is it? Oh yeah..Ft. Wayne. Actually, LEE is one of the most wonderful people I've ever met. We first got to know each other at WPST in Trenton, NJ back in the mid to late 70's. It was a flamethrowing signal that dared to play rock & roll. Tom Taylor was the PD..yes that guy from Inside Radio. HE is a magnificent guy as well..who had many talented people come through the door and UP the big steps to the Princeton studios. (*Note: I almost ran over Brooke Shields on the way to work one morning..she must have just stepped out of the shower (what a thought)..and was crossing the street obviously late for class. She smiled when I almost ran her over. Man would I have been famous for that?!!? Much more than for throwing "Seasons In The Sun" off the middle of PST's tower LIVE on the air on the coldest day known to Jersey history. But it was fun. THAT will be in my obit in the Trenton Times for sure.
Now on to Mark Sheppard. What a luller he is..and a talented one at that. He's performed at parties for my family's special events, and is one of the best production guys I've ever met..even though I taught him everything he knows. Tell him I say HIYA. He's avoiding me for the moment, because I'm not in a position to get him a job..but I COULD be soon..ya never know.
Record Pigs of the world unite! Details soon.

Here's a true curiosity question, directed towards Da Big Guy.

BIG JAY, have you ever considered BUYING your OWN radio station?

(Why or why not???? tee hee)

IMHO, I think a station RUN by JAY, PROGRAMMED by JAY, MANAGED by JAY would be nothing short of

"FAHHHHHHH-byou-luss"!!!!

Hiya..and thanks for the question..difficult answer though..
Today's radio properties are SO out of the reach of the average person that it's absurd. Some of that is because there are only so many frequencies available..and in the case of the NJ/NY/Philly area, there is no ROOM for new stations.
So that leaves stations already ON the air. Unless one has at least a few million (AM low power stations) all the way up to mega-millions for the flame-throwing FM's..you can see why MOST properties are owned by huge conglomerates..as THEY are the only ones who can afford the license..and with it the real estate, the equipment, the towers, now the HD equipement and digital gizmos that go along with it, the talent, the entire infrastructure that owning a station requires. It's almost mind-boggling what it takes to just RUN a station. I think the days of mom & pop stations are long gone. I've worked for BOTH types..and there are benefits to both scenarios.
If I programmed a station today, It would be the mass appeal station with the maximum punch to deliver 40-60 year olds. Music that has GONE from the airwaves in MANY markets. Those little dweeby 20-something buyers of advertising have stolen our memories. There is a ton of buying power in that demo..and it WILL rear it's ugly head again soon. Someone HAS to see it. Yeah..I've heard all of the talk about how much $$ it takes to REACH that audience..and that younger types are more apt to switch brands based on advertising on a lower cost basis. Welll...we all gotta eat, we all gotta drive, we all gotta have health care, we all have...well..you get the idea. ANY station that can't sell their demo has an INeffective management, and sales team. I can't tell you how many times I've been involved with a SUPERB product..only to be told it can't be sold. And THAT was even in the beginning of NJ 101.5's daring experiment with talk and oldies back in '90. Yeah..some sales dudes got it..some never did. But the billing there certainly ain't chicken feed these days..and it took a couple of years to make noise with the ad agencies..but the dividends of that persistence is still being reaped. In LOCAL markets, I can't believe that CERTAIN geographical areas that are in the heart of the signal are ignored..'cause sales doofuses say the local newspaper is so cheap.. HUH? That's so dopey.. There are tools to learn how to SELL your MOTHER if you want to.. I digress.
MY station would just plain kick ass..and it would super-serve the TARGET demo..but be able to attract listeners on either side of the target. I say bull to anyone who says you can't do that any more. POO. Gee..I hope that answers your question.
People have forgotten how to RUN a radio station..and it ain't brain surgery. Just do what your MARKET desires..and find out WHAT it IS they desire. You'll BE BIG in no time. I've done it a few times. I shake my head when people squander the frequencies they occupy..just amazing. Some do it quite WELL I might add. THOSE people GET it. And the audience is better for it. Do the research..but don't forget your GUTS. Talk to REAL people..and use phrases that THEY use when marketting your station. How do you think Not NY, Not Philadelphia came about? In a focus group..some guy blurted it out. Shut the door..stop the presses..send the kids to bed.. It was that simple.
Thanks for reading. Mark my words..someone is gonna do what I described..and win BIG..again. Details soon about THE RECORD PIG.

Yeah Jay! You get it. Too bad most radio management doesn't. They program to a demo that doesn't care about radio, and forget the older demo that still listens. Isn't that sort of a definition of "crazy"?

Good luck Jay.

Hiya,
Yeah, it IS crazy.
If you're younger than 18, older than 40, or a man, it AIN'T about you anymore.
So we're stuck with Spanish, Hip-Hop, diluted lame same 300 Classic Hits, some gun-rack-barefoot-and-pregnant-wife
redneck female-based country, and LOTS of A/C. If it ain't John Mayer, Rascal Flatts, Mariah Carey, or whoever is a
winner or loser on "Idol", it doesn't get looked at, 'cause the 18-40 year old women say so. And don't EVER
offend them in this politically correct world. You're not allowed to have an opinion about
ANYthing other than who you think will be the best dancing couple or what haircut Sanjaya
has this week. Am I sounding bitter? No..just touting reality.. For ANY other format, you're gonna have to
look to satellite or the internet for your music. Sorry.
