Big Jay Sorenson - WJRZ

Re: Big Jay Sorensen - WJRZ

I am the morning DJ at WOLDDDDDDD. Sad song. Never thought when it was a new recording that so MANY of us in this business would be cast aside like a used paper towel. But on a brighter note, let me respond to amfmsw.

I agree to some extent that radio as we KNEW it is over dead toast kaput, and yet there are still success stories in many small markets all over the nation from small operators who have always done things close to the vest, not spent extravagently on talent, promotion, or bells & whistles. They DO it by CONTENT. In the end, it's what comes over the speakers that matters, and NOW it's perceived! Look. I can run the best sounding juke box in the world. But if there's nothing in between the songs that does ANYTHING other than say the name of the platform it IS nothing but a juke box. And ya know, some people actually LIKE jukeboxes. Others still have super morning shows, a good midday person, super afternoon drive, and some actually have someone there at night. Results? Lower bottom line than if they voice-tracked midday and nights, but the audience eventually catches on. At least I think they do. Content Content Content. Some hosts/jocks "phone-in" their shows...meaning they just do it by rote..same thing day after day...same cliches, same "hey it's great to be with ya on a Tuesday morning" kinda thing that was dated in the 60's even..but I digress. A better way to do it would be to say. "Did ya get stuck in the 55mph mess on the Parkway yesterday, when everyone behind you was going 80 still, and you were the only one doing the speed limit? Scary huh. Call me up and tell me how it made you feel. Sunshine today hittin' 60, but snow by tomorrow night. Details in 5 minutes on W____. THAT says something. I can't TELL you how many jocks CAN'T do that. CAN'T, never learned HOW and won't even if their life depended on it. If it's not "here comes the Beatles with "Twist & Shout", they would have nothing to say. It's scary, but some stations actually WANT that..so NO one gets offended by ANYthing that a host or jock says. That way, the sales guy doesn't have to hear from Moe's Body Shop that "I just heard that guy say there were miles of backups on the parkway with lots of accidents." Did he say lots of accidents..no, but the oaf THOUGHT he did. So that's why Vanilla is so tolorated these days. And if the audience only hears VANILLA, then that's all it THINKS it likes! Follow that? If there is NO personality, then there is not reason to truly listen, because THESE days, any number of products can be that juke box. WHY on earth would a radio station in today's enviornment be nothing but a JUKEBOX? Because it's safe and it's all they know how to DO anymore. GONE are the pros to TEACH the newcomers how to do things. GONE are the visionaries, the bigger than life guys and women who know how to communicate with something other than "here's the beggining of another 10 in a row on your station for inanimate objects Q___."
So what radio HAS already become in many markets (not all) is juke boxes playing the same songs that the station in the same chain in the next market is playing only a day later. Sometimes using the same music log. Have you EVER heard ANYONE ever say... "I listen to continuous soft-polka on T-100" No. NO one speaks like that. But they DO say.. Hey.. "I like that polka station" I think it's 100.3 on that FM. So while we all lament the demise of radio as we knew it, remember that it was an inside job. For generations now, we've been telling people music good..talk bad. Music good...talk bad. So now generations say in research groups. They talk to much on T-100. Or I don't like that guy because he has an opinion. I actually HEARD that from a woman once. I asked her what she just did.. She was dumbfounded when she realized SHE had an opinion. OH my God. The ground shook as she fumbled to hang up the phone. I won her over about a year later by her saying...ya know "I used to hate you because you talked to much or had an opinion, and now I find myself not wanting to hear "Oh! Pretty Woman" for the 1, 456rd time this week and instead want to hear YOU go off on why Rt. 9 still has traffic jams day and night now for 30 years. Amazing. THAT'S what radio SHOULD be doing, but they're all weeners. So an entire new generation of potential listeners are GONE now from listening to the radio. Name me ANYone in your family UNDER 25 that REGULARLY listens to the radio and can even remember what station they have on..or better yet, who the jock is? Can't.
That's because THEY get their music FREE now..by stealing it. And the record companies now want to charge radio stations performance fees so the artists THEY screwed out of money will get paid for singing "At Last" when they were 22 years old. They didn't get paid THEN, so now they want their money from SOMEONE at age 70. It's rediculous. Without radio playing music, how many great songs would have NEVER been heard? How many NEW artists get the big hits now. Not many, because the record company is laying off promotion people left and right and the product sucks. This sounds like a lunatic tirade doesn't it. But there IS a point to it all in response to the last poster..
Dan Ingram couldn't get paid what he wanted so he left. He doesn't NEED the paycheck now. Brucie is doing quite well with 6 figures over at SIRIUS, and Bill Gardner (whom I've known he and his family including Andre at WMGK for years) will likely pop up somewhere, and I would think that HE's pretty well off too. It's a shame he lost his gig, but the company will continue by paying someone 100K less to do the same job. Will ratings stay as high? Who knows. Radio listeners use radio as an appliance. If the appliance doesn't work anymore, you find a new one to replace it, or you find another technology that works better. If my FAVORITE guy whom I've awakened too for 2 to 20 years is gone, I'll have to find another person I like...maybe on another station. SO what was accomplished by the owners of the station? Possibly losing the listener forever..or at least for some period of time until they can't find anything else compelling on the dials. Or maybe they use satellite..or maybe they listen to an internet station at their desk (like I do most of the time now.)

Consolidation will run it's course..it will either totally KILL the industry or someone will somehow figure out that you can't keep cutting and cutting and expect anyone to give a crap about your station anymore. Thus the silent stations, the chapter 11's or worse. It's coming..and we did it to ourselves. I am realizing more and more ever day that the more I write about this stuff, I'm nailing my own coffin. Because managers read these pages now and then too mostly for entertainment purposes to laugh at the bumbling know it alls, has-beens, or never weres. But when THEIR job is gone, who will be laughing?
I applaud each and every one of you who have managed to stay on the air in some form. You don't have to be told to look over your shoulder every day. The good guys WILL do ok.. The mediocre folks may actually be in better shape than the personalities in the short term because they don't piss anybody off. But mark my words. Unless something drastic happens soon, what we DID know as radio will be gone or at least that THING I used to listen too. Is that still ON?
From PERSONAL experience, I can't tell you how many people in my home market don't know that stations exist! Some have been on the air for over 30 years..and have NEVER penetrated the mind of some radio users. I ain't kidding. It's THAT unimportant to many. OThers know the stations, but couldn't tell you what they do or what format they are. Others know every word spoken by the morning team and can recite it at the dinner table. THOSE are the P-1's that radio stations covett. What will THEY talk about at dinner when that team is gone? Or that station becomes Punk Polka? Get my point?!!?!?!
I'd once again love to hear from some of my on-air brethren on this one IF you're allowed to comment. But most of you can't. What a shame.

And how many people think I'm still ON the air?? Many more than you would think even after a whole year. Incredible

Someone, somewhere, will realize that paying people to do the kind of radio they LOVE to do will result in radio that people LOVE to listen to.

But there'll have to be a lot of foreclosures (and a few lucky lottery winners among us lovers of broadcasting) for that to happen. Market wise, however, I think we may see just that, and soon.

And then I'll be able to put up a stick and broadcast punk polka. ;o)

Jay, have you heard GRock lately? I know it's not your cup of tea or at least I think it isn't since you do mostly talk and oldies, but I think their jocks. particularly Terrie Carr, do kind of what you are talking about.

I'll be blunt: I am not with Press Broadcasting because of an issue that happened at NJ 101.5 more than 11 years ago. It's not like I did anything criminal, but sometimes grudges and bad tidings last a long time. I wish that weren't the case as I always repected them as people and broadcasters from the time I was a teen!!
I was just looking for a better job, and got sued!!! Not many people know about THAT. Me and Hilarie Barsky were courted by then Westinghouse/CBS to go to what became WPHT-AM 1210 to resurrect the talk format held for years by the former WCAU. Press claimed we breached out contract. Our lawyers and agent said we didn't, and perhaps we had bad advise, but it's water under the bridge. Some management wouldn't even LOOK at us for almost the entire 6 months when we returned to finish out our deal while having really great numbers for the mid-90's. Unfortunately, it was taken PERSONALLY. But from MY perspective, it was NEVER personal; it was business. I always REALLY LIKED the upper management there. I have known them since I was a teenager for God's sake.
I WAS hired back by John Dziuba in '98 who was able to see beyond any bad feelings because I'm a hard worker and I got RATINGS back in '98 after the PHT thing went bye-bye, and was there for a year doing nights as a solo, while Hilarie worked for Metro in Philly. I tripled the ratings in my hours. TRIPLED them. For a year, I followed Roberta Gale who had also returned. We were a killer ratings duo on seperately at night then. (Me and Hilarie were later rejoined at the late WWDB-FM and then went to Dallas as some of you know.) I won't get into specifics from that point on, as it's moot but we still speak.
Look, I enjoyed working at NJ 101.5 more than anything I've ever done. I still consider it my baby at times, along with Walter Sabo, John Dziuba and Bob McAllan, as I was there from moment ONE of the discussions to even THINK about changing formats from Kix 101.5 to NJ 101.5. It certainly took balls to even THINK of doing what we did. The industry thought we were nuts. Time has proven them wrong, obviously. Perry Simon, Leigh Jacobs, and now Eric Johnson have been the only other programmers since I was the first one in 1990. Each added their own personal take on a visionary idea by management and Sabo and I always wish them all well there. It's a grand station by any measure. And I especially am proud of Jim Gearhart for being not only a survivor but a fine broadcaster (for many years). I'm proud of Dennis for hanging in there through various format adjustments. He's another survivor. I don't know Judi that well, but I find her funny. I know Rossi from 20 years ago when we rode the bus home together when we both were overnight guys in NYC..he at PLJ and ME and NNNBC. I know Casey for HIS time there with Scott his old partner. I know many of the news department members there and they always have done a spectacular job. And hats off to ALL of them for making the transition from Press to Millenium seemless.
But back to Press..
I would LOVE to be involved with one of the Press' stations..even today, as I think they sound super and generally are a wonderful family company..and I would fit in just fine with the staff. But there seems to be some hard feelings lingering. That's a shame because I have a lot to offer them locally like a NAME and RATINGS! Can you spell 30 share on Sunday mornings? I thought you could.
Do I LIKE the music that G-Rock plays...good grief no..but I don't care WHAT music I play...it's what between the music that counts.. So in answer to your question, G-Rock is wonderful at what THEY do. I love Scott Lowe..we've known each other for ages too. He's a pro. Can I kiss up to anyone else on this post? Nope..did that quite well. *#$-kissing completed.

Ok, sorry. My writing and spelling,
arent exactly Hemmingway like.
But, you know i root for you, because you
belong back on the air, and heck i wouldn't
be on air without that Jay "push" .
Those hard feelings you speak of, were
because you asked people "push' to be the best.
you expected, what you heard growing up.
A great jock, who wasn't mailing it in.
Telling people to be great, makes them mad.

Yo..Shoothoops. YOU got it. YOU were one of MANY people who PAID attention to what I was saying. I was having conversations just the other day about JUST this topic..about my influence on them from years ago. Some about 17 years ago...and another from over 30 years ago. Neither know each other, but BOTH said the same thing. ONE got OUT of the ON-AIR part of the biz and went on to a VERY luctrative managing career. THANKS me regularly for telling him he sucked on the air. And another who continually comes to ME for critiquing, LONG after I was this person's PD. I could tell you countless people who still come to me for advise...people I've worked with over the years...who yeah..actually LIKE to keep in touch with me and who GOT what I was saying all those years. Some just NEVER got it and kept grudges because of it as you pointed out. One guy was doing it UP until quite recently. Then HE lost his long-time job. Even after publicly trashing me, I STILL felt bad for the guy for losing HIS job. Instant Karma DOES get you..sometimes it ain't so instant. And don't worry about your grammer. Most people on this board can't read or speak English. And I'm turning in each and every one of their employers.

Oh..and another thing.. When can I redeem my prize for hitting 12,000 views on Radio-Info NJ? I expect a diamond Rolex for hitting #13,000. Don't worry. I think of SOMETHING to get the watch so I can pawn it for dinner and health insurance.

...jay...i am not being a jerk at all ... as a guy whom knows job insecurity , within . as well as outside the radio industry , i hope that if you end up with a press station , millennium does not buy out the press station you might end up "at" ( no offense to bob mcallan , either)

Listen, I can't worry about stuff like that. I''ve got bigger fish to fry. I don't have a problem with ANYONE. I just with it was the other way around. You can ask dozens of my radio pals over the last 38 years and ask about how I AM and how I live my life. And besides when you almost croak as I did a few times, it brings MUCH humbleness and MUCH compassion for people in ways you would not think of prior to going through something like that. Ask ANYone who's had THAT happen.
But thanks for looking out for me! I appreciate that. I'll be just fine. And when the next adventure happens, I know you'll all smile..(at least most of you.)

super true , tom....i simply was just was answering his posting in the end of it , where he mentioned press .... by the way , somewhere i have jay on tape from the 70's , on something like wjrz 100.1 , or another station in or near ocean county....somewhere , in my messy tape collection .... and i also have him giving away a prize to a levittown guy called gary coombs when he was on kix f.m. one oh one and a half ...lol .....

Thanks Tom, for clarifying the Press issue. Some might need a scorecard for who owns what anymore.. But the point (no pun intended) I was trying to make was that I will talk with any company about whatever they want to talk about. I don't hold grudges or even have time to worry about those who do. I just do what I do..and that's radio in whatever form it's currently in, or will be in the future no matter who owns what. I've worked for several companies in my life, and was invited BACK to several over my long career. That usually doesn't happen. You all know the phrase about "burning bridges". I've always tried not to...some times it's inevitable...but the golden rule applies to radio folks too..or at least it should. In this climate (for talent and sales folks), stations should just hire the best people they can, and let them do their magic. (Pardon another pun.) Radio pundits and bloggers who are in the know ALL agree that cutting talent is the LAST place stations should be cutting. How about actually training people HOW to sell your format even without ratings. Many small markets SURVIVE just FINE that way, because they know HOW to sell SPECIFIC talent or shows, or the FORMAT. It's not just about all the PPM's, and CPP's, and mumbo jumbo. If Joe's Deli likes the station, and gets results from Zeke Feeblebitzer reading a live spot, then JOE is happy that his cash register is filled. Zeke gets a couple of bucks, and the STATION fills the inventory that's SO available because MOST members of the sales staff are 22 year old girls just out of college and wouldn't know CCR from CPR. Get it? If only someone would understand that at the local level. From what I've read lately, the only sector of radio MAKING money IS local radio..so SOMEONE gets it out there among the several thousand AM and FM stations dotting the landscape of America. Ya know...I may change my name to ZEKE FEEBLEBITZER on the air..I kinda like the sound of it. Big Jay is HISTORY..it's ZEKE from now on baby.. I've read too many copies of MAD magazine over the years haven't I? I still read it. Yikes. What, Me Worry?

Oh..and to C.S.P...I would LOVE to hear those tapes of ME in the 70's. Especially if it's either from WOBM FM, WHLW (11-7) WJRZ, or WPST in the 70's. Can you get in touch with me privately please.. Go to www.bigjayandanita.com and click E-Mail Jay. It's hard to believe that I was actually ON Kix before the switch to NJ 101.5... Lord knows we tried to give KIX a chance to remain..I flew to Dallas and had new jingles made (they were REALLLY good..done at TM.) We tweaked the music..and still could only get a cume of 100,000 or so. The previous owners only cared about a 20 mile radius around Trenton. QuakerBridge Mall and Oxford Valley Malls were the basis of their existence. We saw the bigger picture with that giant stick in the sky on Rt. 1.

I'm replying to myself because something is really bothering me.
I have been slammed again by someone who has been having issues with me for over 25 years now on another board. It's the NJ.com radio forum. I hate to mention other boards..and normally I don't respond anymore to insults. But here's the deal.
I have ONLY been posting on these boards..this one, Shannon's, Sniffen's because I enjoy it. And the feedback I get has been very gratifying.
I will make my statement here and now, and move on.. SO here goes.
I was NOT unsuccessful at WJRZ. Ask ANITA. Or JEFF Rafter. Nor was I at WCTC as some have tried to paint it. Ask Bruce Johnson. Budget issues IN-HOUSE caused management to make hasty decisions about their respective line-ups.
I did just fine at SIRIUS for 3 years..being asked SPECIFICALLY to join them WHILE I was living in DALLAS. When I returned to the East Coast, I didn't even INTERVIEW..I just got the job. Brucie wants me BACK on there. I'm working on it.
Ok..about Dallas.. Me and Hilarie's act just didn't fly with the rednecks that listened to THAT station on AM after KLIF-AM had gone through 5 different morning hosts in 5 years. We were just too hip for the room..too "FM hot talk" and too "NEW YAWK". Simple. I WAS TOLD that later. So our demise there was almost bound to happen.
Now let's go back more. WWDB-FM. That was the "old man who sits in his underwear" talk station in Philly. Me and Hilarie were the ONLY show that was having INCREASES in audience there when the station was heading in a downward spiral after PHT got Rush and Dr. Laura. WE were going to be the MORNING team replacing the news block..little did LOCAL management know that Beasely was changing the format to 80's rock. See how long THAT lasted.
Before that, we were BEGGED to come to WPHT-AM even before they changed the call letters after they dumped sports. We even risked being sued..which we WERE by Press. We agreed to ride out the rest of the term by the way. Back to PHT.. Then we were put on middays..not directly after IMUS, but after a one hour STOCK MARKET show. How the hell was that going to work? Now let's examine my tenure at 101.5. I was there from DAY ONE of Press being the public trustee of that frequency. Kix was a mess. I tried to fix it..but the BRAND NAME was all off..and not what the public THOUGHT it was. Some thought it was country!!!! Not kidding..so NJ 101.5 was born. The President, GM, Consultant, and myself transformed that place along with some VERY fine talent into the giant it would become VERY quickly. Then before that I did the TIME MACHINE on WNBC..that is STILL talked about TODAY. Before that I was Joey Reynolds sidekick on NBC replacing Howard. Before that I had tremendous ratings at WPST. Before THAT I fixed WOBM FM..begged to fix it by the owners..who LOVED the results. I also transformed the neglected WHLW into a Top-40 little monster daytimer with SUPER results very quickly, again..with a fabulous staff including Eric Johnson, Mike Boyle, Mark Sheppard and others. Before THAT I was at PST for 4 years..and invited to return in '84 as previously mentioned. Before that I was one of the initial staff at WJRZ for a brief time in '76, and WHLW-AM before that..and WOBM-FM to start my career in 1970.
Now....
WHY did I just go and mention all of that? For my HEALTH? No.
I did it to show HISTORY..which I have been BLASTED for aparently. Some folks seem to think I'm some kind of loser who sits here in MY underwear all day and just posts on boards LIVING in the PAST. Really. I'm naked.
Wow. I get tons of private email asking me for MORE (not the naked part). Almost begging for a mini-book about what went down thru the years in local radio.
Am I living in the past? Hell no. I have MANY things cooking at the moment. ANY one of them could be huge if the stars are in alignment.

Why do I feel compelled to display this emotion when I TELL PEOPLE MYSELF not to react to negative posts?
Because it's obviously someone (cloaked of course) who has some kind so grudge.. Either I didn't HIRE them, or God forbid, I may have tried to HELP them be BETTER at their craft..or worse yet...it's just some geek who is a wanna be and can be a BIG man by remaining anonymous..or someone I worked with who just didn't like me! That HAPPENS. We can't be EVERYONE'S pal..nor LIKED by everyone. WE all KNOW that in this business. Not everyone digs you.

Well..I'm PROUD of every single moment (well there was one day I'm not proud of) that I have EVER had on the air. It's been a PRIVILEDGE making people smile, squirm, throw things, react. I've been on the cutting edge of MANY new formats...MANY memorable moments in broadcasting. And the most LOYAL worker that ANYone will EVER see in the broadcasting field..sometimes to a fault.

So don't tell ME that I'm a LOSER or a HAS BEEN. Ok..ya got me. I've BEEN off the air for 14 months. Well ya know...THOUSANDS of very good people have been let go over the last year or so for BUDGET reasons that are WAY bigger than WE are or I am for that matter, as talent. INEPT companies who destroyed our business via consolidation..inept programmers who are asleep at the wheel. People with no VISION to see how technology was quickly replacing the NEED for radio as we KNEW it.to be VISIONARY..and then try to react and it's too late.

Then there is the fickle public who gravitates to what they THINK is hot at any moment. Sometimes that's worked in my favor..sometimes not. It's ALL a crap shoot in this business. But I WILL NOT stand by and have oafs and guys with little *$#&@& tell ME that I'm over..That I'm DONE..that I'm a LOSER.

Here it comes.

I will NEVER post another word on ANY website pertaining to radio again..UNLESS we ALL can see WHO these people are. I'm done. I've only done this because I have enjoyed it..and because I was ASKED by many people to share my knowledge of what REALLY happened in Jersey radio especially in the middle part of the state over the last 38 years. I've EARNED that right to tell the story whether YOU think I'm "Done" or not. If it's meant that I AM done, then so be it..

But with my health issues now past tense...(and you have NO idea sir or madam about what I've been through over the last couple of years nor would you CARE)...
I intend to be as proactive as humanly possible to get either a terrestrial company, or some other platform to utilize why I know and do.

And If I catch flack from THIS post..I don't give a rat's $&#. And please..my DEFENDERS..don't bother. These people just AREN'T worth spending another moment on.

It's been REAL fun on the boards.. Thanks to all who have privately written to me..and thanks to the people who RUN the boards for allowing me the priviledge.. THE PRIVILEDGE of coming on WITH MY REAL NAME AND a way to contact me DIRECTLY with a REAL link to my email...and for giving MY opinions about the CURRENT and past..and frankly the future of radio AS we know it. Thanks to my friends..and to people I've never met or spoken to on or off the air.
And finally..

BE BIG..because those are words I LIVE by.
Thank You.

Don't let the sphincters get you down, Jay. And you're right - the guys who fling the doody anonymously are cowardly sacks of fecal matter, no matter how desperately they may try to rationalize it. They're pathetic.

That aside, your story about Dallas is particularly revealing. It's a common one: the host who tries to do something unique and entertaining and fails - or more, accurately, is not allowed to succeed - because the industry has pandered to the ninety year-old right wing idiots for so long, they don't know how to reach anyone else. (I went through something similar when I went to work in Rehoboth Beach a few years ago; a long-time friend - a well-known syndicated host - warned me that "doing good radio at that station will get you fired." How right that person was.)

Now, it seems the entire industry is run that way. I fear for the future of our business when guys like Big Jay can't get work...

I know I said I was done here...but my posse told me to continue to make SURE people knew I didn't actually croak.

Jim..thanks for the hats-off. But I can take care of myself. A sphincter eventually gets his. That IS the only thing I DON'T like about this board..it's the cloaking. But some are just not allowed to post from the biz, so they use anons here. Fine.

My story about Dallas is SO true. We were just too hip for the room, and management there just didn't get it. The GM took me out to lunch a few months before and asked if EVERYone from the Northeast was like US. I said no. Some are worse. He didn't get the joke. But doing GOOD radio doesn't always get you fired. Doing BRILLIANT radio will. Ask Anita.

And Jim..please don't worry about me getting work. I am getting close to some realllllllly cool stuff. But for the moment, I kinda like being retired and being a kept man.

Now I get to stay at home with my 80 year-old mother-in-law who watches The Andy Griffith Show...(starring Andy Griffith!!!, as the announcer says on the intro) on an endless loop on TV Land. They run the same 40 epidodes when they did hundreds. I guess it's Top-40 TV on TV Land. Oh..wait..there's the Beverly Hillbillies theme. Did you know the guy who SANG the song just DIED. JUST died!!!?!!?! Jerry Scoggins...country singer sang The Ballad of Jed Clampett..with Flatts & Scruggs. Irene Dunn (Granny) died in 1970 of a brain tumor..likely due to having to hear the theme song over and over like I do blasting from the other room at 110 decibels.

And more Beverly Hillbillies stuff from TMZ.. Max Baer--Jethro (who's 70)..well his 30 year old GIRLFRIEND just died. Oh my.. Go get 'em Max baby..

See Jim.. I have enough stored material to do at least 50 shows!! But I do thank you for your post of support. I'll be fine reallll soon.

Hiya..
I figured THIS was the thread that started it all for me on Radio-Info--Jersey.
So I'll send y'all a link to today's Asbury Park Press.

See, reporters read this stuff too.
I think it was a fair article. The writers EDITORS cut it WAY down. So much of the possibly inflamatory retoric that you find HERE was missing, but made my points.

I didn't get to plug the upcoming Big Jay's Record Pig Trivia, although in the PRINT version they DID print my new LOGO for the game and other uses..so it almost didn't make sense without mentioning the game..oh well..SOME press is better than NONE.
RIGHT?

Dear Mr. Cloaked,

What does one mean when YOU say "what goes around, come around?

Just what DOES that mean Mr. Anonymous person lurking in the basement of mommy's house at 3 in the morning with nothing to do?

Are you a former employee who has a personal grudge because I tried to help you SOUND better?

Are you a former co-worker with specific knowledge about something I DID to make you so upset YEARS later you'd like to share with all of us?

Are you a disgruntled listener who didn't agree with something I said? (You could have CALLED and told me I was an oaf ya know...that's what talk radio DOES.)

Are you all alone without a woman to keep you on track?

Are you someone who just needs to spray paint graffitti in the middle of the night so nobody SEES what you've written and they'll never find you, so it's ok to say whatever you want?

Are you NOT a man with the proper glands to actually TELL us who you are so we can ALL make an informed decision about what your specific comments are really about?

Do you just HATE me?
Or...perhaps...you secretly LOVE me and this is the way to act out?

Do you see fellow posters why THIS site is so tarnished at times? It's allowing people to take shots like this with NOTHING to back it up. NOTHING to make a CASE against a personality. NOTHING. If you're alluding to the fact that I'm not working now, that's the way the business IS right now and I have many things that I'm working on that YOU couldn't POSSIBLY follow or attain.

Have you written about John Gambling that way?
Have you written about Bill Gardner that way?
How about all of the THOUSANDS of radio people that the HUGE conglomorates have fired over the last year or so. Do you write that phrase to them, who are just trying to make a living and do what they do, only to be squelched at the prime of their careers for NO reason other than the STOCK prince and inept management?

Everyone's career has an arc. Some go way high...and never come down. That's rare.

Some hit their peak young.
Some never hit it.
Some just make ends meet by being ok at what they do.
Some suck..and get out of the biz due to a myriad of reasons.

So what's your POINT Mr. Cloaked person?

I have been ASKED by MANY kind folks to continue to write on this board.

I'm a big boy..and I can take anything you dish out. But if you're gonna continue to be snarky as a CLOAKED individual, then I'm gone. If ya wanna come out of your snake den for a moment to reveal who you are and have a legit gripe with ME personally, then go right ahead. I have nothing to hide or be ashamed of in my 38 years in radio. I worked my ass off for every employer I've ever had. Go ahead. ASK Tom Taylor. ASK Jeff Rafter. ASK Bruce Johnson. ASK Jeff Hillery. ASK Eric Johnson. ASK Perry Simon. ASK Tom Bigby. ASK Dale Parsons. ASK Paul Most. Ask ANYONE of authority about my work ethic and how I perform..USUALLY with a boost in ratings on the shift I've been attached to. Sometimes the numbers actualy go DOWN. Does that make me HORRIBLE?

There are variables like marketting, station signal, change of format, alteration of music, etc...that affect EVERY personalities successes. For God's sake HOWARD had disapointments. Imus hit some low points. Look at THEM. They're doing ok these days. They were lucky, and talented. And just happened to have good advise and bad along the way. Things just went their way! Look at Joey Reynolds, my dear friend. There's NOBODY in the biz that has had the ups and downs and ups like HE has. Take shots at him too why don't cha? He's laughing all the way to the bank... My payday is coming again soon. I'm busier right NOW with side projects than I've ever been.

I sincerely doubt that you will present yourself to us ALL on this board, You're too chicken. I will bet on it. So, I'll just find another BETTER outlet that doesn't CLOAK its posters to make points as they see fit. All personalities in RADIO, TV, Films, TV are fair game. I'm included..and I can take it. What is distressing, is that a phrase is just thrown out there for ALL to see with NO explanation. NO insight. NO justification. Just an eighth-grader being a dork.

Ya see Mr. Cloaked...ya can't HURT me any more than I have been physically in my life. I've been to the edge and back. All that KNOW me know that. I have more friends than you could even count.

I've had quite a nice life too with some incredible things that have happened to me professionally and personally. So bring it on Mr. (or Ms) Cloaked.

Just what IS it that was SO horrible that you had to write something like that?
Inquiring minds want to know? And I think the READERS of this site would LIKE to see what your stance IS and WHY? If ya wanna debate something, let's go! If you want to just call NAMES, go find a playground with 2nd graders.
