Big Jay Sorenson - WJRZ

I'm making a guest appearance on Relics & Rarities with Dave The Rave THIS Saturday night. www.topsshelfoldies.com is the place to plug into. I'll be on for a couple of hours playing songs I have a particular fondness for that not many radio outlets play! Plus, we'll take calls.

Some people have already sent questions to Dave that I'll gladly answer. I think he's gonna ask about The Time Machine era, and other radio questions that I'll give my thought about.

Two weeks ago, I was on The Radio Racket, an internet show about of all things...RADIO! That was a hoot, with many of my long-time listeners checking in to make sure I was still alive.

Just yesterday, I saw one of my doctors who retired last year. He didn't HEAR me on the radio anymore, and thought the worst. NO...I'm still here and ready to rock & annoy.

BE BIG

Re: Big Jay Sorensen - WJRZ

So, now that 16,000 hits is in the view of our collective headlights, I will announce a very interesting thing to chew on in short order (yes it involves RADIO.)

But my real reason for posting again after a 3 week lull: I never got my gold watch in the FexEx for the 15,000th view of this thread, so when should I expect the diamonds from the promotion department for 16K?

If it's anything like SOME promotion departments at SOME radio stations, it'll get lost in the shuffle by an intern, and I'll end up with buppkis (sic) or a signed copy of a jock's picture that was made on a copy machine because the station was too cheap to get glossy copies made. (Jeez was THAT a slam...but all too real in some cases.)

By the way, I did have fun on Dave The Rave's internet show "Relics and Rarities’" a few weeks ago. Thanks for all of your calls! I enjoyed answering some tough questions from listeners like YOU! (Plus I got to play "Pretty Lady" by Lighthouse..."It's Getting Better" by Mama Cass and "At The Top Of The Stairs" by The Formations. I didn't have time to get to "Echo Park", "Little Green Bag", and "Get It On" the Chase record...darn. Now get off my lawn.

BE BIG.
Eek...There's a big Jersey state bird on my computer screen...let me get the OFF and spray it.

1. THANK YOU Board Editor

2. Jay sounded great after the technical oopses were fixed on CBS-FM last night. Like riding a bike, huh? (with a hundred hours of prep time, I'm sure)

3. I don't know about a gold watch for views, RRRR's Fantastic Oldies Game on the 50's-60's Board has 16,147 views and 129 pages as of this morning. We could use some new blood there if ya wanna join in.

Re: Big Jay Sorensen - WJRZ

Hiya..
Just a self-serving note that I'll be on the WCBS-FM 101.1 Radio Greats again THIS Sunday, 11/16/08 from 7-10pm eastern. www.wcbsfm.com

And I haven't seen how many hits this thread has reached in a while. I smiled.

I've just looked at some of the qauint comments on this thread. Good times.

Call in...I'd love to chat with yous again.

BE BIG
Jay

Hey Jay, maybe I'll hit you w/ a "Please Deposit 25 cents for the next 4 minutes" call...lol. Little inside joke there, sure you remember that nonsense about 10 years ago.

Okay, this is the Big Jay thread right? So I should have posted this here. Please less someone take this personally, please don't...
Firstly are you always on Radio Greats, Jay?
Secondly, it seemed you had more of an energy on NBC (I've heard airchecks...), and NJ101.5 (Finest moment I remember is when Bill Doyles Baby was born during the Jersey Hour of Duh!) I taped Jeff's intire show by himself without camercials, wonder if I have that anyware?
Why couldn't you have done anymore talk during breaks, deaveated away from the format some?
I could guess that the guys over at CBS-FM said you had to stick to a certain format, had a very short breaktime to talk at the end of sets. I know you gave it your best with what little time you had (Song intro's, weather, talkbreaks.) Only noted you took one caller during that show too.

John,
Your thoughts seem a bit scattered on this note, but I'll try to dissect it...
John, I don't take ANYTHING personally anymore. I realized long ago that everyone has an opinion; just as everyone has a certain body part that will go unmentioned. That being said....
I've done 2 Radio Greats appearances and another fill-in so far. I am "on-call" at CBS-FM, so I would do whatever they need, whenever they need it.
About my "energy" on WNBC vs. CBS-FM... Well...first on NBC, I was doing a RECREATION of the late-60's sound of Top-40 AM stations like WABC, WFIL, etc...
On today's CBS-FM I was told to just be ME and do TODAY'S approach...which I complied with to the letter.

When I did my FIRST appearance there, I was a tad more upbeat mostly from butterflies and Jolt Cola. Seriously...that first show was more of a rememberance OF WNBC's Time Machine ONLY and not WNBC as a whole... Subsequent appearances I've made have been in the current CBS-FM style and not the hyperactive style of what I did on 66 WNNNBC. As far as deviating from 101.1's current format, I chose NOT to this time, based on what I was told to do.

CAN I do other things? Certainly. I've done enough in the TALK format to adlib for 5 hours and never repeat a phrase once. So I can talk about ANYTHING and I'm ALWAYS prepared to discuss anything. And that is simply a reflection of how I'm self-disciplined. But to disregard what I was TOLD to do would be silly at this point in my career. Yes...I've been a sort of a rebel at times in the past...which has served me well in some places...but for NOW, and until I'm asked to kick it up a notch, I'll be natural, yet upbeat like the station IS now. Simple.
I chose to only take one call during the show...mostly because most of the requests that came in were either not fitting, or from word-slurring-drunks who call all the time anyway...and also from people who couldn't put a sentence together if their LIFE depended on it. Some are very big fans of not only the station, but of MINE too...and some of those folks just want to call in to say how happy they are to hear me again. That would be too self-serving at this point...So it was MY editorial judgment to put people on or not.

I didn't put ANY of the people who got the Record Pig question wrong...I only put on the WINNER...and that had to be heavily edited as well... That guy knows his stuff by the way...most people are NOT Record Pigs... More MIGHT have gotten it if I needed to give CLUES...but I didn't.
Hey John...I appreciate that you not only listened, but were picking up little things that I either did or didn't do. I am quite astonished that people listen with such a critical ear. But whatever I DO, write, say, play, don't play, etc...seems to ALWAYS get analyzed by someone somewhere...sometimes in a positive, constructive way...and sometimes to rip me a new one to fit their agenda of the week.

As you certainly have seen in THIS very long thread, people either GET what I do...or don't. I respect both. What I NEVER have liked about THIS board as opposed to others is the cloaking factor. I'll be honest...some of my detractors have DIED since this thread began. I figured out who was doing it...and you don't SEE that type of venom being spread like you did when this incredible thread began almost 2 YEARS ago.

Many times during that time-frame, I've gone through some incredible health issues...and back to good health...lost a job I loved at a small station...and THEN got to work at one of the BIGGEST and most famous stations in the WORLD. So you can't imagine the thoughts that go through MY head and that of my family. Thank GOD I have a wife who totally understands these emotions and experiences. The highs and lows are dramatic. The HIGHS are so incredible that it is hard to put into words...as well as the support from SOOOO many people... Yet the LOWS are truly that. Low.

I know that MANY radio folks are NOW being faced or have already faced what I did a couple of years ago...and that is losing a gig due to a myriad of factors. I have my private thoughts as to why I was chosen to lose MINE when I did...but publically it was "budget" issues. And I may have been one of the first in the area to be the recipient of that ax. Wait. THIS year ain't over yet...and by this time NEXT year, I bet there'll be even LESS live bodies on the radio not only in Jersey but nation-wide. That's sad...pathetic actually...and certainly serves NO one but the company's bottom line.

I saw some story today that claims terrestrial RADIO listening is actually UP. But.. The REVENUES are way down. So perhaps the public HASN'T figured out that their once favorite air-personalities are no longer there...and choose to listen anyway... I know life goes on and some form of programming exists on EVERY station... But radio is a HABIT...a friend; and yet, to some, just an appliance. Owners and CEO's BANK on that. That is why your favorite radio personality comes and goes from stations quite abruptly..and without ANY chance to say thank you.

For ME, I got SO many e-mails when I left my last full-time position, that I now have a LARGE database with which to contact them of my latest adventures. THOUSANDS wrote to me on a station that only HAS under a hundred thousand cume. That's a pretty good percentage. Which means I had some affect on SOME people...others couldn't give a hoot...and still more don't even KNOW what station they're listening too! That is a fact. And THAT'S why the PPM is going to level the playing field...by simply SHOWING what stations a person is exposed to during a certain time period. I've BEEN to Arbitron many times...some people still write down that they listen to WNBC! That station was dead and buried on Oct. 7, 1988!!!!!!

Point of all of this is...John from Bensalem, PA (lovely town by the way)...thanks for taking the time to not only listen but critique my work. It shows passion for what you do...and they type of entertainment you choose to take part in. Good for you.

Sincerely,

Jay
And BE BIG!

Jay, Always willing to listen and see. I'm what some call quite the radio geek. (Hey I have a tun of CD's , cassettes, LP's, but i spend most of my time with the radio. TO me a car only need AM/FM Xm/Sirius is a plus.
It is truely sad what is going on with radio. The local aspect of the medium has been dieing for a long time. Someday, i'm thinkin it wil become nationalized formatics (Especially with the bigger companies), with national news breaks such as found by CNN, AP, etc. Music will be said companies format everyware. IE, WHTZ and WIOQ will have the same format, with not even local music libraries. Perhaps each company might first jump to three or four different CHR's, so that WHTZ may have the same as say, WAEB, but WIOQ is the same as say KIIS-FM. Traffic would be via metro or Clear Channels Total Traffic. The smaller markits such as Willmington, DE, Lewistown, PA or or Warrensburg, MO wil be the ones with the local presents, news staf, traphic reporting, etc.
Talk radio has become mostly sindacated in a lot of markits. I'm not saying its bad, or that the national jocks/talk personalities do it bad. I'm just saying it seems like look at all the midday hosts being let go for Ryan Seacrest. Look at how all the AC's went from a local presents (JJ Kenity WLTW), or the local person that did Night Moods on WBEB. Gone.
For now, there still remains some local presents from a live human being in some formats, a jock takes calls/e-mails/text, but it seems to be only certain formats such as:
CHR, Classic Hits, Classic Rock, Active Rock.
But locals died in talk radio. Locals are dieing in AC Radio, locals are being yanked left, right and center mid days and nights. What's next? What happend to the local presents of 20 years ago?
Is it budgit cuts everyware? I'm not ripping any company or station per say. Then again, maybe no one cares. My dad will put on the radio in the car, and its my radio to control. lol, he wouldnt' know what he was listening too.
He'll put on the Eagles, and leave it on so when he starts the car next its WYSP. On a side note, does anyone care that there are too many Christmas stations in this area, too early? Maybe not.
Okay i'm done ranting now, and thanks for your responce. It was much much longer then I expect it to be. Glad to know you are doing well, and of corse very important to have the support of family, and keepin the faith in God.
I'm thinkin many people wrote asking you to continue writing on here because of a few reasons.
Firstly there a lot of people that wanna know how you are makeing out health wise, and in radioland. Others (Who may not be in radio)learn a tun when they take the time to read what you write. Your posts are always informative, and that's probably why you do so well in talk radio. :)
You dycected my post very well BTW.

Be well, keep on kickin.

Hiya John...nothing wrong with being a "radio pig".

I had the HONOR of being invited to a gathering of just such people in NYC the other day along with Pat St. John, "Broadway" Bill Lee and Anita Bonita. These were people celebrating all that is radio (in this case oldies/classic hits in NYC) and I must say that we all got an earful. It was joyful noise by the way. Here's why.

We as radio hosts got to hear the usual "oh you're wonderful", or "I listen everyday", or "I'm glad they brought back CBS-FM", "I used to love listening to The Time Machine on WNNBC when I worked the all-night shift", etc... Those comments are ALWAYS appreciated...

But then EACH of us was invited to say something to the quite large crowd in the party-room of a famous Deli. I was the first to speak, as MOST people there wanted to hear what Pat and Bill had to say...but I basically said that WE as nearly life-long broadcasters enjoy knowing that people...real people enjoy what we do. People who have REAL lives and REAL jobs...and hearing that you are entertained by folks like us who just happen to have fallen into this business for various reasons. I did warn the crowd that radio is changing...and they need to support what IS left on terrestrial radio as it could all go away unless there is a market to serve. I think ALL radio-lifers agree that soon audio entertainment will be all about being CONTENT PROVIDERS...and not so much WHERE it's delivered from...be it terrestrial, satellite, internet or cell phone. There may be future technology that we don't even know about yet on a mass scale...but it will ALL come down to BRANDING and CONTENT that is needed...yes needed by a particular audience. The companies or entrepeneurs who make that transition will win! Others will be left scratching their heads wondering what happened.

(Pat and Bill seconded some of what I said during their brief remarks.)

Regular listeners...meaning the CASUAL radio user likely hasn't noticed the major changes in the "business" of radio. Some couldn't tell a voice-tracked show from a live one...and perhaps don't CARE. As long as their NEEDS are met, and their expecations of what they tuned to are met, they're happy.

The sad reality for the folks ON the air is that many will be out of work or are already, entire support staffs have or will be decimated, program directors will HAVE to or already ARE running one or more stations and sales teams are fighting an uphill battle trying to get even a small SLICE of the ad pie.

Newpapers are really tanking. I feel badly for my traditional media friends. They are in real jeopardy. Heck...even TELEVISION is not in the greatest of financial places right now. How many power-scooters CAN they sell on TV Land? They play that spot ad-nauseum because they ain't got no other spots!

John (and others) I appreciate that you get what I write on this board. There are times when I hesitate to write certain things...because I've been told that SOME radio people are quite afraid to come on here with their real names due to some kind of "industry institutional black-listing" when they do. ESPECIALLY when someone is even a TAD critical of what's going on in the radio scene.

Well...then some just don't want to hear the truth. I am not the only one who has given their whole adult life to the biz...just to have it "poof" away just like that through NO fault of their own. That's the cosmic $#@% of all of this. YOU folks TURN ON a station expecting something...then suddenly that something is gone...whether it's a personality, news person, talk host or even a whole FORMAT.
That's business. And I comprehend that.
I just wish there was a better way to handle that stuff..for the LISTENER.

So John, people LIKE YOU and others who frequent these boards NEED to keep stations aware that YOU are on to them. YOU are sad to see things change so RADICALLY in some cases. YOU need to write letters, email, phone or talk directly to management. YOU need to TELL them what YOU want and what YOU NEED from a local radio station. If NOT...they'll all but disappear before you eyes in the next few years.

I certainly hope this economic mess gets fixed soon, as I predict SOME broadcasters will not survive the downturn...and have a fire-sale. Then you may get something on that frequency that is TOTALLY foreign to your ears...with owners who don't give a rat's &$$ what the community at-large needs.

I sometimes unintentionally ruffle feathers when I write on here. I hope that if NOTHING else, the NON-Radio people here get someone of a CLUE as to what really is going on...and not junk speculation and fabrications of the true facts.

I am however STILL UPBEAT about the possibilities of LOCAL radio. I WANT it to succeed. I WANT there to be thriving good old radio wars going on. Now it seems it's just about trying to SURVIVE. They CAN survive IF they don't forget the basics, and not let their very future be taken by others with more vision and GUTS. Technology helped change some of the rules...and some have gone with the flow. Others are going to be left in the dust without MAJOR overhauls in the way they do business.

And one more thing... YOUNGER people may never come back to radio UNLESS you give them a reason to do so. Gone are the days of listening to a transistor radio under your pillow. Now they sneak the I-pod into their beds with songs THEY programmed. So some real stratedgy will have to be used to woo younger folks to RADIO. It ain't gonna be easy. So what's LEFT of the listening base had BETTER be programmed to in a way they relate to...on the platforms they can USE... We ALL have had to learn new techology. If not, we fall behind. Radio had better do the same as an industry, or it will end up where newspapers and magazines are now. Fossils.

And to ALL who post here...PLEASE try to spell-check when you can. Just write it on WORD first, then spell-check things...and paste it on to your post. We all make mistakes (I've had a few but then again, too few to mention.) In the words of the Tavares brothers "It Only Takes A Minute".

BE BIG!

Yeah...pretty funny. One word out of about 1000 without spell checking. Who needs a life Joe? I'm sorry...I really should have done my best that.. And thanks for pointing THAT out, as opposed to discussing a very pressing issue in the radio business...like its survival!
Be BIG!
Jay the Jock

Had you not recommended that people use spell-check, I wouldn't have pointed it out . You have to admit that someone who makes a remark about poor spelling should at least make sure that they THEMSELVES are using correct spelling. The "who needs a life?" reply from you is typical of an insecure radio person. Good at giving it but cannot TAKE it.

As for coming on here to discuss "pressing issues" in the radio business, you're right. But again, maybe you should follow your own advice. The majority of your posts are long-winded, self-indulging, nostalgic rants about the good old days. Get over it.

Hold on...I was just goofing on you man. I thought you were a PAL, remember? My point was simply that many times, people write totally awful posts with NO chance of being understood, let alone spelling things even CLOSE to the words letters. Yeah...indeed, I missed that one...So shoot me.
And as for me writing long, self-indulgent posts...so be it. I'll just go away again for the same reason I went away for a long time on this board. People with axes to grind and just plain hatred in their hearts. I for one, won't deal with that.
As for ME making the point to begin with...I was just trying to elevate the discussion to other levels other than "who is the best female DJ in South Jersey?" Keep this up and there won't be ANYONE interested in RADIO, let alone women on the air in South Jersey.

If my (in a small way like others have done in a much more SNOTTY way) asking people to spell-check a tad better makes people actually DO that, then so be that too. Jeez Joe... I won't get into a pissing contest on here. I certainly can take it bud. I've been at this a lonnggg time...so I am used to the barbs and arrows. Some of my detractors have actually DIED recently, and I didn't even bring UP how KARMA can be used both ways. Think about that next time. I was truly just trying to make a simple point...and ALL that you got from that was to mock ME? Wow. This just isn't worth it anymore. I know Tom Taylor better than MOST of you on this entire web-site and I bet he'd find this thread laughable..especially now. And I made the mistake of getting sucked into YOUR negativity. No more.

I post things that I think MOST people would LIKE to read... I see that's not the case any longer.

So....again...I bid you all adue...or is that adooo? Or is that...oh screw it. This is such a drag.
BE BIG!
The self-indulgent, ego-maniac with no talent whatsoever (does that need dashes?) DJ/talk host, with my only claim to fame: throwing a record off of a radio tower,
Jeez...

Gee, maybe could that be because modern radio sucks/is on life support/if not entirely dead, talents like Big Jay are sent to pasture for "Otto May Shaun" and "Da Bird", and there's nothing else better than to reminisce about the way things were? Perhaps YOU are the one who needs to just GET IT!

Obviously you must be one of those people that tries to be the ninth caller for the continuous hype the listeners out of existence contests, if you believe that industry self effacing nonsense.

Why is radio listening up? Two guesses:

(1) Fewer commercials with the lousy economy.

(2) Radio is free, 98%+ of the population has at least one radio, and people like winning stuff they might not be able to afford at the moment (concert tickets, sports tickets, cash, shopping sprees, etc.). Being caller #9 isn't such a stupid exercise with the way things are.

The average listener doesn't care about the stock price of Citadel or Entercom. Granted they'll miss their favorite DJ for a few days if he or she gets fired, but as long as "the (format) station" is playing (same format), the average radio person will stick around. And if you throw in a chance to win a pair of $180 concert tickets, that'll make that person happier. This ain't rocket science.

Just a guess. Pick away.

I have no axe to grind, personally or professionally, but after seeing this thread continually pop to the top of this board and reading a few recent posts, I'd like to offer a few observations.

1) Based on what I've read, Joe's characterization of Jay's posts... long-winded, self-indulging rants about the good old days... is largely accurate, in this thread and others. The length of the posts makes them long-winded (duh), and the fact that the posts often include unsolicited explanations about why every career stop ended the way it did (because the other guy was wrong) makes them self-indulging.

2) If Jay didn't respond to this thread about himself every few weeks to talk about how many views it has received and the smile that it always brings to his face, would it have as many views?

3) Jay said this in a recent post... "Some of my detractors have actually DIED recently, and I didn't even bring UP how KARMA can be used both ways." Does any human being actually deserve some kind of credit for NOT pointing out that a detractor's death may have resulted from bad karma, even though he eventually made the point anyway without using specific names?

I wish Jay nothing but health and success, but here is a phrase often used in radio but usually ignored by Jay... less is more. Now, I'm sure I'll see a response that says something like, "I know I said I would STOP posting, but I COULDN'T let THIS go" and "you're a coward for being ANONYMOUS." Oh well, I felt like it needed to be said.
