Well, it has happened!!!!!!!!!!! WRIX-FM 103.1 has returned to its`s roots and is now all retro a.c. and Oldies!!!! This is the format that they had from their sign on in 1977 until 1982 when they went Country. They are calling themselves WRIX-FM 103.1 Stereo- Just like they did 30 years ago!!!! It is wild listening to some of the stuff that they are playing! They sound like they are trying to be like WANS-FM 107.3 in the early-mid 1980`s. I hear that they may switch their call letters to WANS-FM 103.1 very soon! Mike Benson may also be on the way!!! WANS AM 1280 has switched to the talk format that 103.1 had! They are calling themselves "1280 WANS AM" Just like in the 70`s-80`s!!! National news on the hour for both stations! Retro Anderson radio is back!!!!!!!!!!

I know.... I need to pass my 8 million post count soon!!!!!!!! I will have a huge party and invite everyone here!

I'm a daily reader, and I gotta admit 260 plus posts for the time you've been a member is impressive. Best of luck on the 1 million mark by November.

103.1 to Oldies? Did they do a perceptual? What happened to the listeners of the other format and what other stations will benefit from the change? Who is programming the station? What was the reaction of current advertisers to the sudden change? Can the Sales Department at 103.1 convert those advertisers to the current format? Which Jingle package are they using? Who is their voice talent for imaging? Is the audio processing for their target audience been adjusted? Is 103.1 going to sign Mike Benson to a contract? How many years? What is the marketing campaign going to look like?

Insiders want to know.

Thank God somebody in the Upstate has finally started playing oldies. It took long enough. I heard them in G'vl today. Sounds great. Thumbs up to WRIX for this move. I live around Laurens and get them very well so I'm happy.

Thank you, WRIX!

Thanks to the many folks here who called WRIX/WANS and got them to switch!

I didn't get to listen to WRIX extensively yesterday, but after doing so today it isn't exactly an oldies station. They just played Elliot Yamin's "Wait For You" then went in to Quarterflash's "Harden My Heart." Then after that they cut in to the middle of Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter. I don't know exactly what they're doing. Maybe it's not satellite. Odd.

WRIX-FM is now playing alot more Oldies! They have a contract with Jones Radio Network out of Denver. They were switching with several different stations of Jones, one was mostly current a.c. They have now switched that one off and are now playing something called "variety station" from Jones with 1960`s-70`s Oldies. They may switch to Good Times Oldies format from Jones soon....

I think it's great. A local station serving it's local community. It won't be a ratings buster, but if well run can keep the lights on and pay the employees.

I agree! WRIX FM has long been community goaled. Their Morning Show with George and Pork Chop is actually the same show as the old Matt and Bev Show. They play WYFF News at 6 AM/PM and have a live local Sports Talk Show weeknights from 6-10 PM. They also play Phil Kornbult out of Columbia at 6:30.

Isn't the Jones oldies format the one with JJ McKay? I think it was the last format used on 1070 in Greenville and the oldies station in Charlotte uses it. Not the best, but not bad. They air a lot of 64-69 music.

YES, jj mckay jones station format has been around for many years. Actually, Dave Sanders (Dave`s Diner) and Gary Outlaw have been on there for over 20 years. WCCP-FM 104.9 had this feed in the early 1990`s. WGOG-FM 96.3 from Wahalla had it from 1999-2003. I lived in WV is a samll town that had it (and still does). It is a good feed. It has been called good time Oldies for many years along with Hit Radio. WRIX seems to be using it at certain times of the day and then also using a feed from Jones called Variety (with mostly 70`s Oldies). They seem to have disregarded the weak ac Jones feed that they had last weekend (thank goodness). I am still waiting for them to change the call letters to WANS-FM 103.1! By the way, the old talk format is now on WANS-AM 1280. They play ESPN on WANS AM on the weekends. Also, WANS 1280 now has alot more local news and weather-Good!

Why are they using more than one format? The one they were airing most of this week was AWFUL. That "ThisRadioStation.com" thing. Was that from Jones? I hope they go with the Oldies one entirely. Most of those songs can't be heard anywhere else in the area (as opposed to AC). A satellite-fed AC has no chance against WSPA or WMYI....but a satellite-fed Oldies format should do pretty good since that's pretty much the only option for that format. Forgot about Dave Sanders and Gary Outlaw. Good talent as well as JJ.

I'd imagine they could get a lot of listeners in the Greenville area as well. I picked them up loud and clear all around Woodruff Rd area, Mauldin, Simpsonville, etc. It's decent in pretty much all of Greenville except when you start getting really close to WOLT, then they start trying to bleed over. I was surprised how decent their signal really is. So people outside the Anderson area can enjoy as well.

I agree! I think they will switch entirely to the Oldies. They may have local Oldies programming also. I just heard them play "Do you think i`m sexy" by Rod Stewart. This most likely is the first time since the late 1970`s that WRIX has played this song! When I was about 10 years old, I would listen to WRIX late at night with headphones. They had a young girl d.j. that would always play this song before signing off the air at Midnight! Wow, that really brings back the memories..... WRIX started out playing this type of music from sign on in 1977 until going Country in 1982. And yes, their signal even picks up well in some Mountain areas of North Carolina!

Wow, they really do have a good signal then.

A quick question....is WRIX broadcasting in stereo? I have a basic GM radio in my car and can't get them in stereo. Never have. Anyone else having this problem? Maybe it's just my radio -- I live in Laurens, get a VERY solid signal, but no stereo. Same in Greenville. The signal can be crystal clear but mono.

I'm surprised they kept the WYFF newscasts and didn't move them to the AM. That just seems sorta out of place.

I will have to check out the FM stereo thing in other areas. In Anderson, I am picking up a FM stereo signal on all radios. WRIX is still very much community programming also. Always has been since 1977.... Listen live on Saturday Mornings tofrom 6am-9 am for the live and local "Southern woods and water show" with some crazy redneck hunters that sound like larry the Cable Guy! They are the funniiest thing on radio today! They take live local calls on the air! The WYFF News 4 thing started back in the mid 1980`s when WRIX was Classic Country. Alot of local people ctach the 6 am/pm news on there when they are on the go............

I'm surprised the WYFF newscasts didn't move to AM....seems like they belong there more.

Around 5-6PM today they were playing that AC format again they were using the first of this week. Heard mostly recent music, 80s-now. Lots of newer songs like Teardrops on My Guitar, Bubbly, etc.

It appears that WRIX-FM 103.1 is using THREE different Sat. formats from Cox. Different parts of different days, they are switching! the first format, is that awlful one A.C. from last week! The one that you were talking about from last weekend. 2). Format #2- is a someone similiar one from Jones- it is called "Your Variety Station"- This one contains no new music and mostly 1970`s oldies. They seem to play this one alot around 1 pm on into the afternoons. Yesterday, they played songs like "Build Me Up Buttercup"-Foundations, "Chevy Van" by Sammy Johns, "Let Me In" by John Travolta, etc.... 3). Format #3 is Good Time Oldies from Jones. I have heard thi9s late at night with Gary Outlaw. Don`t forget that WRIX-FM still has alot of original local programming and still broadcasts the Country/Bluegrass show LIVE everynight from The Barn in Hartwell, GA. WRIX-FM is very much like a variety station that is very community geared. Like the stations from 40 or so years ago......very refreshing!
