Big OKC Sports Radio Changes

It should been in such a way where KBRU should still be Alternative as KHBZ while KRXO should still be Classic Rock. Oh well, things change, so we have KBRU playing 80s and 90s rock which resembles a Gen-X format like KTGX is at a time in Tulsa.

I thought maybe Tyler should flip KRXO to Alternative instead of Sports and Clear Channel should shift KBRU to 70s and 80s Classic Rock.

KQOB should really focus on an Adult Hits format instead of a Classic Rock format like KBEZ in Tulsa, KJKK in Dallas, WJGO in Ft. Myers, FL, or KCBS in LA since "Bob FM" is pretty much an Adult Hits branding in the first place.

Huh?

KRXO is flipping because they are horrible in the ratings. It's hard to fix something that is so watered down and broken. KRXO brought classic rock to OKC, but they are far from where they were 20 years ago. They have nothing that makes them stand apart from Bob or The Brew. Sports, as someone else mentioned, is easy money. Tyler knows that. Flipping to Alternative would be going from bad to worse. That format doesn't really even exist anymore, and it is certainly not a money maker.

And flipping Bob to adult hits because that's the format other "Bob"-branded stations use? That makes zero sense. With KRXO flipping, Bob stands to gain their audience (especially those out of the metro who won't be able to pick up 104.5)...flipping now would be a horrible idea.

Alternative still works in other cities, but I don't think the 107.7 frequency is best suited for it. Maybe the 104.5 frequency if the classic rock format fails on it. It's very popular with people in their twenties today, but overall is still a niche format. There are still several other popular formats with no stations in OKC, that work in most cities, and the last thing needed is another sports talk station.

As easy money as sports is, isn't there still a point when too much is too much?  Could they flip every frequency on the dial on OKC to sports talk and all still make money?

I just found out about KRXO flipping to Sports, that was a shocker right there. I haven't been that shocked since KAEZ flipped format on that frequency in the mid 80's.

I expected one of the classic rockers would flip being that OKC has way too many. I didn't expect them to flip to the one format that OKC is even more saturated with than classic rock. I hope it doesn't last because there are so many format holes on the dial in OKC, but being that sports stations are low cost and high profit no matter the ratings it probably will.

It's just another sign of the times and of what FM radio is becoming.

It could be worse...they could've flipped it to KOKC-FM.

Probably doesn't make sense to the people that know what's going on, but if they had to move the classic rock to 104.5, I wish they would've put it on 1520 and simulcasted it on 104.5. This setup seems to work with Tyler's 1560/96.5 combo. At least then 1520 would be playing music again.

I'm just a listener and radio enthusiast, so getting some music on 1520 again would make it nicer to listen to my vintage radios.

Add John Rohde as the second announced member of the sports talk crew at 107.7.

Leaving The Oklahoman to do it too...which is crazy.

I completely agree with you, I think another sports station is a horrible idea, especially considering it wasn't that long ago that Jox 930 failed miserably.

Agreed. I've been saying for awhile now (and I'm not the only one) that 1520 deserves to be playing 50's/60's hits. With reverb!

Is this true? Kind of funny since he's been filling in for Mike Steely the past few weeks on The Sports Animal. I like John R, though...I think he's great on the radio.

1520 and 104.5 would have made more sense. Oh well, I guess Ty wants to fight with the exact same weapon as LB has... a powerful FM. I feel sports listeners quite frankly don't give a damn where they can get what they want, they just want to to be able to get it clearly. 1520 certainly has no problems in that regard, and 104.5 would entertain the northside ad agency gang. Oh well... But, what do I know? It's Ty's and Tony's time to make things happen. Hopefully Ty gets it right, because if he doesn't it could be a breathtakingly expensive mistake.

I think the one thing that most of us are not discussing is what a 100,000 watt sport signal brings to Tyler Media. To them, it is not just about flipping to a new format, I think it's just as much about protecting their investment. You have to remember, when they bought Renda, this included a major percentage of Sooner Sports Properties. Imagine what an advertiser could bring to the table when they can combine marketing campaigns, promotions, etc involving both the Sooner Radio Network AND the new 107.7... Having that brand alone and a couple of marquis personalities will easily put them on equal footing with Cumulus. As crazy as we are in Oklahoma about college sports, it will be an incredible tool for revenue, and also a measure protecting the investment made in SSP.

If the new 107.7 were able to get the Thunder AND the Sooners, it will be much more challenging for Cumulus.

The good news for the Unrinal is that it has a renewed Thunder contract. The bad news is there are very few people left to service that contract. It will be interesting to see how things go through the extent of their contract with the Thunder. The Cumeless fabric is crumbling quickly...

Pretty much right-on the money.... I am not a fan of the idea, but it does make sense to fight a powerful FM with another even-more powerful FM, ironically pumping our of the VERY SAME ANTENNA at Richland tower. The KATT and KOMA-FM also pumps out of that same tower also...

104.5 is broadcasting this afternoon. It is playing 107.7 right now. They are probably in testing mode right now, as the audio on 104.5 has some artifacts. Reception near the fairgrounds is good. They don't appear to be rebroadcasting an HD-2 station, as my Sony HD tuner doesn't detect an HD signal on any of the Tyler frequencies.

If they had to put sports on 107.7, I still wish they would've moved classic rock to 1520 and simulcast it on 104.5.

I noticed the artifacts and that no HD station in their group is up and going yet. The FCC still has them down for repeating 92.5 as a fill-in FX. It'll be interesting to see what HD stick they'll actually end up on. My guess would be 1077, but who knows? I can certainly hear some compressed digital crud going on... and pumping/thumping in their audio processor setup.
