Bill Heard Dealerships

I wonder how many radio stations in Atlanta will have to write down ad money owned by Bill Heard as they shutter their dealerships? Gotta be in upper six figures.

The Heard dealership in Scottsdale, AZ shut down, apparently without notice, last week putting 148 people on the street. News reports later suggested that GM would reopen it as a factory store but that hasn't happened yet.

There are lots of vehicle ads on Phoenix radio but Heard, to my knowledge, is not one of the majors.

I worked the Bill Heard remotes almost weekly in Columbus. Best gig of the week! Their former marketing director, Phill Carter, is one of my mentors. CRAZY talent that man has... brought in loads of people, lots of soldiers from Fort Benning too. Before we handed over the microphone, all we'd have to do is brand in and say "3615 Bill Heard Parkway," then standby to lock it out - as Phill used ninety seconds of his :60. I assume Bill Heard Parkway will be re-renamed soon... I heard at one point, Columbus was the market with the most remotes in the country because it worked so well for Bill Heard that the market became saturated with them, up to two separate remote breaks in the same stopset!

So they issued too many bad loans and GMAC pulled their financing... I'm shocked, even though I saw it happening for years. Didn't expect it to hit my hometown so obviously.

Where in my previous post is Phoenix mentioned? Bill Heard had four dealerships in the ATLANTA area, which is also the label on this board. ::)

Yes, you are quite correct and stupidly I thought you might like to know that the dealership failure is affecting more than just Hotlanta.

Seriously... Chance... go weed some flower beds or something. The Heard cuts will devastate radio and AE's budgets in the markets where they spenT big $$$. There will be heads rolling soon within the former ranks of Heard management and lots of questions from the Feds. Stayed tuned.

Bill Heard was a huge user of radio in Columbus. Jimbo Martin can't be happy about this.

Jimbo will be OK until they close all the BBQ joints.....then you will see a really unhappy guy. But I would bet that Bill Heard was 4-5 percent of the billing some months down in Jimboville.

Bill Heard left Nashville over a year ago: same routine...bad loans...deceptive loans : if you don't qualify, the BH
staff looks in the phone book for someone with your name (or close enough)...and pushes it thru under their credit report info.
Also, BH was notorious for ripping off the hispanic population. And yeah, chance...BH operated in lots of metros other that ATL.

Also, from other Heard (now Heard-less) markets such as Phoenix...
we like to watch. ;D

Who the hell is Bill Heard? I grew up thinking it was just a local dealership in Columbus from watching channel 9.

Heard was huge, had dealers in several states. Most dealers get in trouble by being "out of trust" with the lender that floor plans the cars in dealer inventories.Dealer will sell cars but not pay it off the floor plan. That;s a big problem and will cause the lender to cut you off.Plus it can get you prison time.Heard may have been guilty of this and using that money to float the store.

Their ad agency must've known this was coming because they cancelled all remotes and pulled all ads from our southside station several weeks ago.

We were doing at least 1 remote per week and for a station our size it was a big hit to take.

Needless to say, we are scrambling to replace that money.

I recently heard one of his ads on KKLZ; it was on Sunday morning during the weekly presentation of "American Top 40: The 70's". I found the ads to be very loud and irritating, and they would not have made me buy a car from that dealership.

I seem to remember the same about the Heard ads here in the Valley. There are several dealers who believe the more they shout and echo the "voice of god" it will encourage you to buy from them. It causes me to hit the skip button and I make a mental note not to patronize that advertiser. Car dealers aren't the only ones doing this type of "shoutvertizing" but they are probably the most prevalent.

Have you ever noticed that high end dealerships don't participate in the "shout-vertizing" as you so aptly named it? You never see Jag, BMW or Lexus dealers doing this.

I'am glad they're gone because, when one of their ads ran on the radio I would change the station. Any car dealer that has loud commercials I turn the station and don't buy a car from them. Here in Geeorgia Bill Heard was under investigation by the Govenor's Office Of Counsumer Affairs.

Excellent discussion. This whole thing is rather sad.

The company mailed out letters saying your car is being recalled and used that as a ploy to get folks to buy new cars when they didn't need to.
2700 people will be out of work thanks to this dealership.
People who were in the process of buying cars may lose their deposit and not get a car.
Customers who have their cars in the shop may not be able to get them back because the doors are locked.
Radio sales people who rely on that commission check to put food on the table will not have that.

See how one business can cause all this damage? How come W. isn't bailing them out? (I had to get a little political) Why isn’t this regulated a little more? Is there a Bill Heard? Is he going to jail? Do you think he even has any remorse?

To further the discussion, how are salespeople affected when a big acct stops running ads? What would the ripple affect be in radio if the three big jewelers (D. Geller, Shane, Solomon Brothers) shut their doors? What kind of financial impact would that have to you personally and to the station or group?

And…how does this affect Q100?
