Bill Kimm bolting The Ball

According to Andy Durham at greensborosports.com Friday will be his last day as he took a job in Atlanta with Turner Publications to write for nascar.com . They will fill his slot from 10-12 with Bill Rosinski's syndicated show. Now Bill's show was 9-12 because it fit in well between Czabe and Rome. With the change do you think they will jettison Czabe and try to go local in AM drive? And will they just bump up Brad or even Drew like they did Bill when Marc Amazon split? Perhaps Neil Glasgow from news 2 since he seems to live up there already, or perhaps bringing in some fresh blood?

If not then I would be very nervous over on Country Club Dr.

I always thought a local PM drive show would do well on a sports station! Never was wild about Rozinski! A tad pompus!

Sorry, Never heard of any of them, but I know ziltch about sports!

I understand they're putting a reprise of the previous day's Packman in from 9am to 10am. Not easy to find a good Sports/Talk person locally. May take a while to find a replacement for Kimm. Would be a good time for anyone experienced to call them. They might be interested. However, both Packman and Rozinski are broadcasting LIVE from Charlotte and they have lots of callers from the Triad, so it's not like they're in LA or something.

I'm not into sports radio, but even I see a problem with running an hour of "sports talk" from the day before. It will be dated, with no reference to what happened the night before. It will be so obivious to the audience that it is recorded. Putting Drew on doing scores and taking calls live would be better. At least it would be live. Just my opinion.

This must have come down at the last second. Rehashed Packman from the day before sounds like a temporary solution. Czabe is great, but expendible and they will need some sort of true local presence in the programming. And I just don't see GHB bailing on the format, I just wish they would give the format a fighting chance and move it to the FM stick. Classic country is fine if thats your thing, but sports would do just as well if not a little better and would be a lot more attactive to advertisers than it is in its current home where the nighttime pattern is lacking to say the least. But at the very least I expect them to try something in the morning slot, they have already tried every other day part.

when brad and brit get canned, they should use 1 or both of them

Andy Durham would be a great addition. He's been doing sports in Greensboro over 15 years, has lots of contacts, he can sell, and knows the (Greensboro) market (which is essential to being successful in the Triad). Plus, he's a heck of nice guy, great to work with and a team player. Unfortunately the management would just want him to sell and Andy, like some of us, still enjoys being on the air and isn't quite ready to retire.

I'm guessing Andy is 45-50 but I think he's been around longer than that, he just looked young when I knew him and I don't want to say "60" based on his sports media career. ;)

He's a great guy and any station would be lucky to have him working there. Or newspaper or website or video production company or whatever else he's been into over the years.

ttt

Its really ashame that a market the size of the TRIAD has not had a successful sportstalker. What is the size of the market??? 42 or something like that???

It seems the obvious problem is the lack of signal for the entire TRIAD. I'm not sure a sportstalker has ever had coverage of the entire area and that hurts I guess...

Oh well, I had high hopes for GHB to pull this off, but outside of nationally syndicated shows and simulcasting out of Charlotte, it looks like another one bites the dust.

Don't think you should count The Ball out. Give GHB time to get a new talent to replace Kimm. If you think about it, the Triad has no pro sports, so everything talked about here is outside this market anyway. Look at the number of callers the Packman gets from this market! It took the GM at The Ball 5 years to get a Sports/Talk station here. You should support it if you want it to stay, not hit 'em when they have a bump in the road. Bill Kimm's leaving was unexpected and it takes a while to find someone new.

I am not counting the ball out by any means, but something is going on over there because I have not heard a single local update this week. Now I didn't listen to the Packman yesterday so perhaps I am mistaken, but if this is the case it does not bode well. The website now lists Drew as PD and Brad/Bryan as the update anchors but again I am not hearing them during the breaks, hmmm.

BTW-All the pro teams may be out of town but this IS NOT a pro sports market, at our core we are a college market specifically a Big Four market.

Sure the Panthers have their place, but they do not dominate the sports thoughts of those around here, unless the bandwagon is rolling. Around here most people I know have two teams, the one they cheered for before the Panthers and the Panthers themselves, and when push comes to shove most still align themselves with their old team.

The Bobcats are of no account even in Charlotte, here they are a complete non-entity. And no one really pays all that much attention to the Canes until the playoffs.

But you live and die around here on how well you can talk ACC hoops. Do that well and do it with passion and the listeners will stick with you. Matt & TJ during the days of the Ticket, John Renshaw(even though he was syndicated), Andy Durham and Maurice Stanfield all showed that trait, and all have succeeded in this market and they will again in the future.

Yep.....ACC hoops and NASCAR drive sports in the state of North Carolina. The others are seasonal/bandwagon type entities...I'm really surprised someone hasn't put a good sports station on a good signal. What are males listening to now? Buzzard, Rock 92, and TQR????

I know for a fact that a prominent midwestern sports talk show (from the TRIAD!) host from the one of America's largest, most highly-rated sport talk stations inquired and lobbied for a position with GHB management just after Mark Amazon was hired to no avail. He was willing to take a substantial pay cut as well to work with a start-up in an area he loves and grew up in.

Don't forget, John Renshaw grew-up in Greensboro (among other places) and is a huge ACC fan. He's had his problems and his schtick would probably not sit well in the TRIAD, but you never know...

Bottom line: The TRIAD, although it doesn't necessarily know it yet, NEEDS a strong sportstalk station. If done correctly, it could be very lucrative...

The other issue is that the male demos are not so popular with radio advertisers. The great bulk of ratings buys are based on female demos - assuming they influence the spending more. Only a few product categories follow male ratings!

That factor makes signal even more important. In order to be in the running for the few male oriented buys that are up at any given time, a station must have a signal that covers the entire metro.

No one has ever tried all sports on a decent signal. SJS has come as close at being a success with sports and they can't sustain a sports call-in show. Their revenue is generated generally from selling play-by-play time to Bobcats, NC State, etc. Advertiser support is very limited!

Renshaw would be PERFECT for this market. People like a little schtick with their sports. Plus during the days of the ticket John would pack Players sports bar to the rim, especially the first two times he was here, by his third appearance Matt & TJ had been jettisoned(the saddest time in this town sports talk history) and the station was dying therefore the turnout was much weaker. When I worked for 1590 and we did appearances the first thing everyone would ask was 'what ever happened to the freak'. And this was a solid five years since he had last appeared on the air in this market. But you are right when you say John has problems.

BTW-I heard Bryan doing local breaks during Packman so hopefully that is a good sign for this station. If I were a betting man I would give you even money that in the end Drew will get the local slot and they will try AM drive, sure it will be just fine.

Ain't no party like a Renshaw party because a Renshaw party don't stop. - I remember hear that all the time during his show. The ticket had a good lineup and I thought Matt and TJ did a great job with their show. Ferrell who was on late night on the ticket is now on Sirius on one of the Stern channels, he knows his sports but I can't take his raspy voice.
