Bill Kimm bolting The Ball

well when Matt tells me the offer was "solid" than I guess it was solid

xpd...you can't compare Matt P to Whoopi or Steve Harvey. The latter are proven entertainers. Matt P's only "entertainment" experience was an on air shift 8 years ago on the Ticket...an AM station that probably never had more than a one share. Who would be taking the bigger risk in hiring Matt P...the station or the announcer? The benefits and salary might be OK at CC...but it is still just a board op job...In order to get a full time gig Matt P will need to find a station or group willing to take a chance on him...and that ain't gonna be at CC.

Matt P. told you this was a solid offer?

So why didn't he take it?

I again submit the solidity of the offer is not just that "they mean it".

Also, don't assume that a person who producs a syndicated morning show at a CC station is not well paid or taken care of. I would hardly call him your basic button pusher.

You're wrong on several counts. First of all, I wasn't comparing Mattie to Steve Harvey or Whoopie. I clearly stated that the point I was making was that the last time you did an air shift has no bearing on whether or not you can do a good job on the air. I was using Harvey and Whoopie as examples of that concept. Now, that being said, I personally do think Matt is talented and could do the job in this market or any market for that matter. Most people don't know that Matt was offered a "Solid" position as an afternoon Sports Talk Show Host on an AMFM owned station in Pittsburgh back when he was on the Ticket. He decided that he wanted to keep his family here instead of moving them to another market.

You're also wrong about Matt not having any on recent on air experience or just doing a "Board Op" job. In addition to doing the sports reports in the morning on The Buzzard, Matt does a lot of remote broadcasts and personal appearances for the Buzzard, which he is well paid for, and he does some VT'd weekend shifts.

And finally, there is more than just button pushing going on in the mornings on The Buzzard. Matt is also required to do a lot of mouse clicking and scrolling as part of his job. It's brutal. He's usually sweating and out of breath by the time the JB&B show is over with each morning. Of course that could be from the internet porn. I never wanted to ask.

...Oh, and I forgot to add that Matt and I do a half hour public affairs interview show each week which runs on Sunday mornings at 6am on 4 of the 5 CC stations in this market. If we could speak spanish, it would be on all five. And the most amazing thing is that in spite of the fact that Matt and I do the show, neither one of us has ever been up early enough to hear it. If you want to get up and listen to it, we interview Guilford County Schools Superintendent Dr. Terry Greir this week.

coulda...woulda...shoulda. I am not demeaning what Matt P does for CC. He may have talent. But he is not full time air talent for any CC station in the Triad. And at this point in his career he would be a big time risk for any station or group because he is not a proven commodity.

There are people that recognize him at Buzzard gigs from the Ticket days....I'd venture to guess Mr. Pencola is more of a proven "name" in the market than you are.

Yeah Matt P is a pretty well known commodity in this market. However John Renshaw is the only guy I have ever seen just make people go ga-ga.

Now I don't know if a Renshaw would be a good fit with a company like GHB but something has to be done over at the ball, trying to play yourself off around here as 'local' by running shows from Charlotte will just not fly. No matter how many times 'Dan the Deac fan' calls Packman. At least they still have the local updates which is nice but kind of useless without a local presence to back it up and at this point one has to wonder just how long they will let those continue, the fact they are still on tells me GHB must have some sort of plan to bring in another local host or to bump up someone from within. But if not then the update anchors may just be marking time.

Did anyone ever consider that Matt might be doing just exactly what he wants to do? Give it a rest. I don't blame him for turning down Pittsburgh, no matter how solid the offer was!

What does the Triad have ? Wake outside of Winston-Salem.
I can't believe I made it to 300.

Winston-Salem has done a lot of annexing since Wake was relocated. It's pretty much inside the city now.

I know Matt will be disappointed that I'm not talking about him anymore, but I was wondering if anyone here knows what Tom Small is doing now? Tom was also on the Ticket for a brief period. He was an extremely talented sports talk show host. Tom was hired from the Ticket by the same station in Pittsburgh that tried to also hire Matt. Tom was doing a late afternoon and early evening show on The Ticket and then was hired to do Middays in Pittsburgh. Tom loved his job, but he hated living in Pittsburgh. In fact, his unhappiness with living in Pittsburgh was one of the reasons that Matt decided not to take the job offer from there. When the station in Pittsburgh flew Matt up to try and persuade him to take the afternoon job, Matt saw how much Tom disliked living there. Eventually, Tom left the station and came back to the Triad.

Now in addition to being a great sports talk host, Tom was also a very talented musician and song writer. In fact, not long after he came back to the Triad, he got a recording contract that allowed him to not work and just spend his time writing songs and recording demos. The last I heard, Tom and his wife had bought a house in Kernersville and he was going to try and make it as a professional musician. I haven't heard from him since. Does anyone remember him or know what ever happened to him?

In answer to an earlier question, I don't remember the call letters of the station in Pittsburgh. I asked Matt today and he couldn't remember them either.
