BIN LADEN'S DEATH: HOW DID YOU FIND OUT?

Ooh! Ooh! Controversy on this board! Already that makes it more interesting than SOWNY has been lately.
Thanks for the kind words, although my status as "legend" (in my own mind) has nothing to do with my politically-oriented comment.

Henceforth, shall he be known as "The Incindiary Mr. Berns"?

As long as it's on the Zookmeister Broadcasting System.

my kitty told me. She started spitting out fleas then hoarked up a hairball that looked a lot like OSB

I was curious to see if this thread would get resurrected since certain posts were taken outside.

DB, have you appeared on The SOWNY Show lately? The two you did back when Armstrong was still alive are keepers, a nice peek behind the scenes. Plus getting to hear Jeff Kaye was a real kick! Out of all the PD's I've worked for...only a couple approach that level of genius. Although I have to give props to our station's new PD and the level of creativity he encourages.

As far as I know, the SOWNY show died with the board's founder, Craig Smith. Radio lost a really good friend that day.

I just took a peek over there and found several months' worth of shows - latest being 6/24/09, and then one of the two shows you did with Armstrong. Now I know why 6/24/09 is the latest. Thanks!

I've been away a while, never knew about the SOWNY board. Just listened to the August 27, 2007 show with Don & Jack. It's a little chilling now to hear Jack talk so candidly about not knowing how much longer he had, six months before he died.

I contacted Jack in '06 and let him how much I was impressed with his voicetracking, and what an influence 'KB had been on my career choice. I graduated East Aurora High School in 1972, and remember vividly when 'KB sponsored an afternoon school assembly program on the science of sound, with lots of production value. Jack came out at the end of it, and told us all that night would be dedicated to our school on 'KB.

He was genuine and gracious in his reply to my e-mail. I'm so glad I didn't wait another day to let him know what his time at 'KB, and his body of work, had meant to me.

Don, you sound amazingly now like you did then. I hope you guys all know what you meant to us. To this day, my sense of humor is probably 50% from my Dad and the other half from you guys on 'KB.

(Much to the chagrin of my mother!)

Ditto Paul.

Even at my age I'm still learning how to be a great Jay Trachman-style storyteller...but passion for the music, and how to convey it with listeners...I learned that from Don and Jack Armstrong.

The fact that the ability to relate such content is crucial in the PPM world makes me all the more thankful today.

Ok, I'll stop blubbering...but you younger readers who probably roll your eyes anytime a thread "goes 'KB", download some old airchecks from the 1970-74 period and also go listen to airchecks of some of the other great Top 40 stations of that era for contrast.

I think you'll get it.

Funny, there was just something last week on All Access mentioning the importance of "predictable unpredictability". I think it was Bill Tanner, still active in the business after all these years.

Of course that was Jeff Kaye's programming philosophy. Predictable unpredictability. Not undisciplined...entertaining.

Thanks, guys. It's terrific to know that the work we all put in at one of America's two great radio stations is appreciated. Frankly I still have no idea what Jeff Kaye heard in me, but I will forever be grateful that he gave me a chance to find my voice at KB.
