Black Stations - Where's the outrage?

R. Kelly told Hi-Hop Soul magazine; "I'm the Ali of today. I'm the Marvin Gaye of today. I'm the Bob Marley of today. I'm the Martin Luther King, or all the other greats that have come before us. And a lot of people are starting to realize that now."

I went on the web sites of the four major Atlanta radio black stations and there are no references to this statement. As far as I know, there is no boycott or ban of his music either. The Dixie Chicks mouthed off about Bush and they are still banned. The usual suspects, Jackson and Sharpton, haven't commented on it either. Why not? You would bet your bottom dollar that if John Edwards compared himself to Ghandi, JFK and Moses, right-wing radio would have a field day. Why isn't the black community upset about this? Why aren't the community and civic leaders holding him accountable? Why isn't black radio doing anything? Can you say f-ing hypocrites?

BTW, the new Dr. King will appear in court on Friday for his latest hearing. The Bob Marley of today is charged with 14 counts of child pornography for allegedly videotaping himself engaging in sex acts with an underage girl. Nice!

Because I'm sure nobody, especially black stations, gives R. Kelly an iota of credibility.

The big question there is: What is George Soros going to do with those 6 million copies he bought? I mean, how many coasters does Moveon.org need for their soy lattes?

Black radio should be outraged becasue an arrogant rock star made an arrogant statement about his own sense of self importance?.

::) ::) ::) ::)

He's not a rock star, he's an R&B singer.

Thanks DashRipRock for mentioning the Dave Chappelle R Kelly parodies, they are hilarious.

Watch out...this is radio and there's no place for politics! :p

When news of Kelly's alleged crimes broke several years ago, many urban radio stations did take Kelly off their play lists---gradually most returned his music to their air, perhaps because he has yet not been convicted and there is some evidence Kelly had been set up. But there is no need to compare that to country radio stations' stupidity of not playing the Dixie Chicks.

Just because he sing R and B does not preclude him from being a rock star, he's worth millions, he's sold millions, has groupies obviously, hence he's a rock star. Just becuase he's black and sings R and B dont split hairs, [EDIT]. So by your rationale PRINCE isnt a rock star? Michael Jackson isnt a rock star?....... Sorry, they dont all look like Axl Rose.

::)

[EDIT-inflammatory]

Calling people hypocrites doesn't make sense when you're calling 100 U.S. million minorities to action. I think you should start one of those online petitions and be sure to call up local radio stations to air your dislike about R. Kelly's referencing himself to Martin Luther King, Jr. No ethnicity, race, radio station, organization, etc should endorse that statement made by R. Kelly and I agree, we as a people (every race, size, shape, organization, etc) should speak out against R. Kelly.

I'm honestly shocked that R. Kelly would even release a statement like that and hadn't heard about it until this post. Maybe you should inform Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, your congressman, etc.

And for the magazine to print it, they know this can draw controversy and they, like any other medium that airs controversial statements, want the ratings. So, let's take a stand and give them those automatic ratings if we have to.

He only bought 2.5 million according to Billboard year end sales....still pretty good, but it doesn't pack the wallop of the 8-10 million albums they used to sell.

Classic example of biting the hand, there....More people dislike them then like them now, because they seemed low class when they called all thier CNW fans stupid. Thats why they have to cancel tour dates ;)

From Parade Magazine's "What People Earn" issue a few weeks ago.
Natalie Maines made 15 million in 2006. She must feel terribly banned and shunned.
I only bought one copy.

So YOU'RE the one. Good on you....Maines made 15 million dollars? I certainly hope she's "paying her fair share"...I'm sure she is - probably donated it to Michael Moore to save the poor children of Cuba...

Yes, Tower Buzz, Prince is a rock star because he actually plays instruments. R Kelly is an R&B Star that should be in prison. Yet again, Tower, you show your ignorance. Go back to your hole.

Wait, what? So by your argument there, Prince should be in prison? I see. Yeah, Tower...get back in your hole! Why do I get the feeling that if allowed to continue Johnny might have added "...with the rest of 'em"?

Just to clarify for those that might be confused:

Prince = Rock star
Michael Jackson = Pop star
R Kelly = R&B Star

/thank you

Gee, I wonder what Rascal Flatts made last year ;)

If she didn't feel so 'banned and shunned' why does she keep telling us she 'feels banned and shunned' from CNW fans?

Ok, Nastily, take yer 15 million gross and your 2 million domestic and move outta Texas. They dont want you there. That's why she had to cancel tour dates in the state!

Dont mess with Texas! ;D

It's funny how time changes things. The massive backlash to the Chicks came at a time where an anti-war stance was the exception. Just yesterday, the front page of the living section of the AJC was an article about all the bands that have released anti-war songs recently, but you haven't seen nearly the response that happened when the Chicks made their statement.

Especially now when the majority of the country actually opposes the war. Roger Waters even made it a point to bring it up on more than one occasion at this show at Chastain last night. I seems as though a lot of the people that disagreed with the Chicks when they first made their statement are hanging onto the anti-Chicks position now just on principle.
