Bloodbath at Nova M/KPHX

So is it true that Fred Weber really chose the KKFR call letters for 92.3
because they represented his first name?

I don't recall if the KKFR calls were followed by "the fire station" slogan or
the slogan came on board along with the calls, but "the fire station" was
used early on.

KKFR had a TV spot showing the staff and a dalmatian on a fire truck,
but the spot (or a second spot) also showed Phoenix "on fire" and one
of the shots was of the Westward Ho burning--this upset the elderly
residents of the "Ho" (it was--still is?--a retirement hotel) and the spot
was pulled much earlier than anticipated.

Hmmm...if the Westward Ho was burning, then it was likely the KKFR/KFYI
studios around the corner would also be (631 North 1st Avenue, ex-KPHO
910 and also KPHO-TV before they built the plant along I-17).

The call sign was chosen for the slogan "92 Fire FM", with a top-40/oldies hybrid ripped off from a station called W-Fire in Indy if memory serves correctly. It morphed into a hot-AC/top 40 under god knows how many program directors. It was a radio roach motel: careers checked in, but they didn't check out.

The station became Power 92 almost on a whim: the PD walked into the studio on the Friday of a holiday weekend and told Goodard 'hey, starting with your next break, we're now called Power 92.' The only sweeper the station played for weeks was a hastily produced one with Goddard's voice.

The rhythmic lean started after Fred finally spent some money to hire Don Kelly as a consultant. But that place will always be 92 You're Fired FM.

Here, have a stack of CBS network dubs.

Mark Williams is a libertarian, not a liberal. I really liked Victoria Jones, but I don't know that she would be considered a left-winger either. John Geise was a great talent, but he was let go in cost-cutting since Fred wanted to save money at night.

It's just radio, man.

Funny how everyone who worked at the old KFYI (other than the Reich wing mouth breathers) except Leykis gets labeled as a "libertarian." It's okay to be a liberal; in fact given the racist ties to the libertarian party aka Ron Paul and his savants, it would be preferable....

Re KPHX, it was very interesting last week for a whole day (Thursday I think) it was announced that The McChesney Brothers (spelling?) were reviving their "M & M Show" to run in Farias' old time slot. I KNOW I heard these promos more than once and the KPHX website air show schedule even listed the change. Then on Friday all that disappeared into the ether.

I also read on the www that KPHX would be flipping to - surprise! a christian format after the first of the year. Maybe gawd can listen to the station 'cause with its crappy signal not many of us here on earth can. So how many christian stations will that give us then? Totaled do they even poll a .000000000000000001 share? Of course gawd's not into radio for the shares anyway... Say Hallelujah! ;D

Bill, grow up. Seriously, that was childish and in very bad taste.

Highly factual and accurate. If you like hate and disinfo, then KFYI is your fountain of love....

Actually, the conservative talk boom was a response to the liberal media's rampant rants against Ronald Reagan and George Bush. When the conservative hosts gave it back to them and then some, it became "hate talk". They always dish it out but they can never take it!

I just love how right-wing extremists practice revisionist history. The media did not crucify Reagan or Bush Sr. The original generation of right-wing spinmasters made a fair and balanced media the punching bag of the 80's. Lee Atwater and his ilk were the personification of hate speech and spin.

Yes, it's surprising nobody has invoked Godwin's Law on that post.

As Godwin's Law has become more and more popular, its use in daily arguments increased. The rising use of Godwin's Law led to the implementation of the Dodds Corollary. The Dodds Corollary states:

"When debating a particular subject, if a comparison or implied connection is drawn between the opponent's argument and Hitler and the Nazi Party, the maker of that statement is automatically discredited and the debate is automatically lost by the person or group who referenced the connection to Hitler or the Nazis."

Yep, pulling the old "nazi" argument out of the closet is a sure sign of desperation

...thus, ChumpChannel has been plugging the hell out of a loser for years by giving Limbaugh his oxycontin fund? I didn't know that ;D ...

There they go again. ::)
