Bloomberg coming to Boston

CC's translator in Worcester is moving and is set to rebroadcast WJMN instead of WTAG... Potential FM home for Bloomberg in Worcester?

I guess they're moving it to get it inside the 54dBu of 94.5. It's definitely a huge downgrade for the signal.

Don't see why they would go through all that trouble instead of keeping the AM on it to give it an FM presence. Unless WTAG is about to be sold...

btw CC's WQSO 96.7 Portsmouth which reaches part of NE Mass. rebrands as NH Newsradio
// WGIR 610... Jack Heath mornings, Beck, Rush Hannity etc

Barry Armstrong welcomes his new competition

http://bostonherald.com/business/me...ong_welcomes_competition_from_bloomberg_radio

>>“A lot of people say, ‘Who wants to be highly ranked among 55-year-old men?’ You know what, 55-year-old men and women have all the wealth in this country and we do really well there,” he said.

btw Al Mayers is mentioned; wasn't he prog dir. at WRKO at some point or am I thinking of
someone else? On Howie's show he would be mentioned and he had an assistant named Kevin
Straley whom they nicknamed Little Al, like racecar driver Al Unser Jr...

From comedy to financial...1200 must be laughing all the way to the bank.

According to someone in another post (and IIRC, Scott Fybush in one of his recent columns), CC plans on bringing the translator back to its roots with WJMN once the move has been completed. I don't quite understand their thought process with this move seeing that WTAG really promotes the FM presence in Greater Worcester. At its present location, it throws out quite a signal.

In fact, IIRC they changed this translator originally from WJMN to WTAG because the AM 580 signal is a challenge in the immediate suburbs east of Worcester which has quite a significant population base of potential WTAG listeners. WJMN at 94.5 booms into these areas so it is a very peculiar move by CC.

Can't see CC selling WTAG because with the WSRS combo, they pretty much "own" Worcester.

Right strange move. btw WTAG new morning man Paul Westcott came from their WGIR 610 in Manchester NH...now WGIR sister station WQSO 96.7 in Portsmouth has rebranded as NH News
Radio, a simulcast of WGIR--morning host now Jack Heath followed by Beck, Rush, Hannity etc.
CC's operations at WTAG, WHJJ, and WGIR/WQSO show a commitment to news & conservative talk
in those areas, but CC's WXKS 1200 couldn't cut it.

WBNW is very weak in the Financial District. WPLM is even worse. I can't think of any station on that network that puts a decent signal into downtown Boston

For Bloomberg, if you have to be weak somewhere, the financial district is it. They wouldn't find must of a daytime audience in the land were everyone already has instant, and constant, access to hardcore biznews (and a lot of it from Bloomberg. Those subscription fees paid for the Bloomberg machines sitting on everyones' desk is what made Bloomie a billionaire.

But, out in the 'burbs, where the money lives, is where the action is. There's a reason why high end auto dealerships, and suburban health clubs have CNBC or FoxBiz, or both, locked into at least one television in the service waiting area and locker rooms.

TSB

As long as Bloomberg is in an expansionist mood...

Although the economy down here in the South Coast / Rhode Island is very depressed, I still think a business formatted* station could do well.

Wonder if Bloomberg might be trying to find a home down here?

*I'm not so sure I would count 790's hybrid format as a "true" business station.

WBNW and WPLM, which I said had weak signals in the Financial District, are not Bloomberg. They're Barry Armstrong's "Money Matters" network. The new Bloomberg format on WXKS 1200 AM will have a strong signal in the Financial District, except for inside some concrete/metal buildings that block out practically all AM signals.

I don't know if WXKS-1200 will be stunting this evening (February 28h) prior to the launch of Bloomberg Boston (watch for new call letters that will spell out "Bloomberg Boston"), but if they do, they could air several hours of a continuous loop of Bachman-Turner Overdrive's mid-1970's hit "Taking Care Of Business".

And my point was only that putting a strong signal into the financial district is of marginal, or no, importance to a business news radio operation, and shouldn't be used as a determining factor in picking what station to use to carry biz news programming because that's not where the audience is. The fact that Bloomberg may boom into the financial district may be good cocktail party chatter, but begets zero benefits.

For Armstrong's, and Bloomberg's, purposes, they're better off putting an 'Ok' signal into Brookline or Weston or Duxbury than a gangbuster one blanketing Milk and Congress streets.

WBNW does OK in Weston by day and probably is listenable there on most (if not all) nights. Biggest nighttime interferer is first-adjacent WBBR, which Bloomberg owns and which carries the Bloomberg programming (except in the rare case of a sports pre-emption). So I don't think it matters if WBBR swallows WBNW at night. Brookline is another matter, however, and I believe that WBNW in Duxbury is only for avowed radio geeks. OTOH, WPLM is probably solid in Duxbury.

@bostonradio @WMWMBlues Reviewing the options. Obviously 7P to 5A isn't exactly making it rain... 5-8A however, we'll need to review.

As for Bloomberg on 1200, it's strong in Weston in the daytime, but only fair there at night due to the night pattern. It is "gangbuster" in Brookline, the Newton (Oak Hill) transmitter site is not far from the Newton/south Brookline line, and it's in the prime direction for their pattern day and night. I'd guess that 1200 in Duxbury is fair to marginal in the daytime, probably poor at night, though I haven't checked it there.

From the Tom Taylor Now newsletter:

>> “Matty’s Comedy,” keyed to WXKS-FM jock Matty Siegel, debuted with a 0.2 share (age 6+ AQH) in the PPMs. It never did better than a 0.3 and never cumed more than about 50,000. (Kiss 108 cumes 1.5 million.)

Not sure how it did in 25-54s etc
Wonder if people stayed tuned for 5-10 min or so then switched to something else? Just ocassional tuning in...
