Bloomberg coming to Boston

Yesterday (March 1st) in capsule reports on business, general news, and sports that are aired several times an hour during the day on Bloomberg Radio, anchors of these updates began mentioning Boston sports teams as well as New York teams.

Of course, should Bloomberg expand into the top ten markets (which I think they soon will), they obviously won't be able to do that.

It was noted on Herald column/comments that prev. owners of 1430, 94.5, 107.9 (just before CC?) had tried biz radio on 1430 and it failed--6 months later it was back to standards.

>>Bloomberg would not settle for a lousy signal.

It certainly would be better than, say, WXBR. It does fairly well in many areas by day and at night
it pushes east toward Boston. Prob. good recep by day (for the business folks) in cars; as for
in workplaces, if they can't get it on a radio (maybe in the "lunchroom"?) there's always the Web.

It wasn't six months. As I stated in the Herald comment section and on this board it was six weeks. But that was 15 years ago. I would hope that Bloomberg has improved the way it produces the format for its affiliates.

Sorry, thanks for correction! And yes, I guess we can quote the Monkees from one of their
reunion singles: "That Was Then, This Is Now".

I have been sampling Bloomberg 1200 since they debuted Friday morning. So far, I like what I hear during the weekdays but I wasn't as impressed with the weekend offerings.

I will say that I like the frequent Traffic, Weather, and Sports updates. T&W is on every 15 minutes during the day including weekends (not sure about evenings and overnights) because I haven't listened to those times yet.

Then they add a local Boston sports update at the top and bottom of the hour after T&W together. They also had AP network news over the weekend.

It appears as though they’re using Metro (or whatever it is called these days) for the traffic, weather, and sports for most of the day. However I did hear Meteorologist Gary Best on Friday morning who works (owns?) Hometown Forecast Services, Inc.

I guess Bloombaholics are addicted to Starbucks. I find the furious pace maddening. Coupled with the extreme audio compression, which makes 1200 the loudest-sounding signal on the AM band in an area where the signal is good but by no means the strongest, I imagine it would not be maddening only if you had ODed on caffeine or some other stimulant. If a lot of people start listening to Bloomberg during drive time. I think there will be a noticeable uptick in violent incidents among commuters.

WBZ packs in just as much info without sounding so hyper. And WINS, which specializes in short-form news, paces its news about like WBZ does. One of the Bloomberg guys, Mark Mills, who used to work in Boston on the old WBIX 1060, would be good at calming down Bloomberg's air talent.

I like the content, coupled with a healthy dose of news, traffic weather and sports
So far not maddening at all.
They can be heard clearly even in fringe areas.
You want to talk about maddening? WBZ's repetition on old news, just the headlines, parochial point of views, half the story, and then... conservative talk and infomercials.

Maddening is also Money Matters's Drew Mortgage show. THat guy should take a breath

I could be wrong but I didn't think Drew Mortgage was part of the Money Matter's network. I thought he bought time on WCRN only. The good news is he is only on twice a week now at WCRN, Tuesday's and Thursday's at 11 a.m.

Boston Radio Watch ‏@bostonradio
Whoa! How are you planning to fill those hours? @davecullinane @WMWMBlues

(Mark suggested "FoxBizNet and Imus"...)

Dave Cullinane ‏@davecullinane
@davecullinane @bostonradio @WMWMBlues I wish them luck regardless, they've been great to work with on our stations and our Fin Exchange.
Dave Cullinane ‏@davecullinane
@bostonradio @WMWMBlues Reviewing the options. Obviously 7P to 5A isn't exactly making it rain... 5-8A however, we'll need to review.

That wouldn't be Mark Snyder, would it? AKA "The famous" Keith Snow? Zero credibility. Like reading yesterday's newspaper.

I stand corrected

I looked up Mark Snyder
http://www.pmpnetwork.com/bio.html

Not the same guy.

I am RELIEVED to hear that!  FYI:  Snyder wrote a blog in the 90s that was full of half-truths and WAY off-base predictions.  Also "breaking news" that was a week old.    He would also give his personal critique of Boston area stations under the guise of "Keith Snow, popular former Boston radio personality."  (No such person ever existed.)  We would open our staff meetings with a "reading from the Good Book Of Snow," laugh uproariously, and move on to business.  We discovered his true identity through nefarious means. :) Just for fun, we would "leak" phony items such as "pending" format and personnel changes that would never happen, just so he'd publish them.  He NEVER attemped to verify the stories.  In one of the less-important media directories, we listed "Keith Snow" as PD--of course he was never "in" when a call came for "him".  Gave the receptionist something fun to do. "Oh, you JUST missed him," etc.

Good times!   Radio sure was FUN back then.  :) :)

Ah..had heard of show That's Life with Mark Snyder, prob from radio
listings on Globe tv page.
Bloomberg 1200 comes in on 94.5 hd 2 of my portable
But it's listing a song by Erik B and Rakim.
Having better luck with Greater, CC, and Entercom
HDs than CBS ones
