Bob Brinker returns to KABC

There is no one more entertaining than Bill Handel on the Handel on the Law show. I doubt anyone would leave that in order to be "entertained" by Kim Kommando.

Then neither would anyone leave it to be "entertained" by Leo Laporte. You've confused the argument.

Inside Radio ratings show KFI down to a 4.5 share in most recent rating period. Will be interesting to see if KABC can begin to make an upward move with the new programs recently added to its schedule. Would be nice to see some more competition in the LA radio market.

A lot of stations wish they were "down to a 4.5". Again, it's the holiday book so I wouldn't read a lot into it.

If the astute bugman is correct, the combined power of KABC AM and FM would mean there is some real competition in the market for talkradio. Its all about coverage. KABC has some very good programs right now so they just need better signal coverage to take a bite out of the KFI numbers which are down to a 4.5 in recent survey. For starters I like Doug McIntyre way more than Handel, and the new weekend programs are way better than the competition.

I really can't really think of a current KABC show that is good. But having said that I really don't think it would be difficult to dethrone KFI if a daring and smart program manager (not Jack Silver) wanted to take them on and maybe go after a younger audience. I've always maintained that KFI has been lucky in being the ratings leader, not because they are that good but because everyone else is that bad.

Handel, J&K and Rush are super powerhouses but besides them, come on, the rest is mediocre at best and can easily be beaten by a decent talk host. That idiot Bill Carroll, Tim Conway Jr, Wayne Resnik, Lisa Ann Walter and now that super Turkey "The Fork Report" are all unlistenable. It's just that KABC is too busy selling gold or screaming at Obama that they cannot seem to even beat these weaklings.

Well Westy you are certainly correct about the weakness of the KFI lineup when it comes to Bill, Tim, Wayne and Lisa Ann. As for El Rushbo, his tireless whining about Obama has become unlistenable. And you are right, the Hannity and Levin whining about Obama is beyond boring. If these guys could hear themselves they would shut themselves off.

Having said this, I think a simulcast combo of KABC AM and FM would take a bite out of that 4.5 that KFI still has and make for better talkradio competition in our market. It is easy to get lazy when there is no real competition with good signal coverage and that is what you are looking at on 640AM these days.

And I think every major market in the country would be watching very closely!

Talk about KABC adding an FM signal for greater coverage may be all that is needed to take this format into the top ten in L.

If it can get total signal coverage KABC has very little competition.....signal coverage remains the key.

It would be great to see KABC add Brinker's third hour rather than just carrying two out of three. Good to see real live programs like this back on KABC on the weekend. Now if they can add an FM stick they will be back in the ratings race and give KFI serious competition. KFI remains vulnerable as their recent ratings show.

Lots of bumper music talk on Doug's board. I think the bumper music on Brinker's Moneytalk on KABC Sundays is the best on the radio. Upbeat tempo perfectly sets the mood for the show. This is what bumper music is all about. Can't find it anywhere so it may be specially recorded for the show.

Yeah I agree. That is a good bumper music and fits the show perfectly. I actually liked Leykis' bumper music too (Metallica-Enter Sandman) since that also seemed to suit so well too. But nothing else comes to mind that is good.

KABC is still only carrying two of the three hours of Brinker's Moneytalk. Who is the person to contact at KABC to ask that all three hours of the show are on?

Another weekend of the much improved program lineup on KABC. Although I still like Leo LaPorte, I will concede that Kim Komando has a unique appeal to those who look for basic computer advice and she is a welcome addition to the weekend lineup. Along with the best investment show on the radio on Sunday afternoons, things have really changed at KABC. Give me real radio programs instead of informerical sludge and I will be a steady listener.

Well......THAT didn't last very long, did it? Looks to me like KABC has cut Bob Brinker down to 1 hour and it's just after midnight on Saturdays from 1 - 2pm.

Look.....if you're going to sell the time to financial advisors who are selling their services, fine. But if you're going to make a run at decent financial/business programming, then there are plenty of fish in the syndicated sea that are a hell of a lot more interesting and relevant for the average listener than Mr. Brinker.

And that goes for the bumper music too. ;-)

Like who? Perhaps you prefer the "Various Specialty Programming" that dominates KABC's weekend schedule. ;)

No, I was referring to "decent financial/business programming". Whether by simple oversight or deliberately, you left that phrase out when you quoted my previous post. ;-)

Just my two cents, but when it comes to financial programming I think Clark Howard and Dave Ramsey are the best on radio. I think Ric Edelman does a good job of bridging personal finance with some basic retirement planning & home ownership advice. And for investing/business, I like Ray Lucia because he has good energy and keeps things moving, and I think no one talks about stocks the way the guys on Motley Fool Money do. They talk about companies and CEOs the way a sports talk show discusses teams and athletes.

I think KABC would be well-served to slot ANY of those shows in for Bob Brinker. But again, only if they're interested in making a run at decent syndicated financial/business programming.

I guess there's no accounting for taste. Bob Brinker's show is about money, politics, investing and the financial aspects of the current news cycle. He often has great guests in the third hour. Ric Edleman's and Clark Howard's shows are also topical and informative.

Dave Ramsey, OTOH, does the equivalent of a personal advice show where he tells people to tear up their credit cards and gives other pedestrian advice. You can't tell if you're hearing a Dave Ramsey show from this week or last month because there's no news component, just "advice."

When I tune in a financial show I want information, not to be told how to live my life.

Is that the hour KABC runs? 'Cuz, y'know......they're only running 1 hour.

Maybe someone should modify the name of this thread.
