BOB FM

> Any thoughts on the good trend for BOB?

Well, when just about every other radio station drops, someone HAS to gain. Look and see if anyone else had a gainer. 'LTJ, 'JAS, Y108, the X, STAR, WORD, Fox Sports 970 and 'FGI-FM were small gainers. Look down a couple of threads and you'll get a pretty good feeling of what Pittsburgers feel about Pittsburgh radio.
I don't want to burst bubbles BUT Joel Folger, the man who's credited with the creation of BOB, trumps Austin as his "baby", proudly noting that it went #1 in 25-54 in its 1st book out of the box. BUT, the Winter P1 12+ shows that BOB has almost lost 1/2 of its audience from their Fall '04 book (Source: Radio & Records online www.radioandrecords.com). Their Winter P2 comes out next Thursday. Unless 12-25 y.o.ers are staying away in droves, BOB/Austin may not be doing as well as Folger would want people to believe. So, what does that spell for Pittsburgh? Well, someone from either Fleet Street or Foster Plaza should start PROGRAMMING instead of PENNY PINCHING, or else this is what you're going to get.....people gushing over "flavors of the month" like BOB and Froggy.

> > Any thoughts on the good trend for BOB?
It's new, people are sampling, it'll burn pretty quickly.

They need to do a Classic Rock station called "Paul-FM." Oh wait, they are!

Froggy is a flavor of the month?

I'm not sure I agree.

BOB itself seems like a faddish format- but Froggy is a legitimate No. 2 country alternative.

Now, I will say that I think the DJs being all named "Farrah Froggit" or some variation of that is just plain insulting to the talent- especially demanding Jimmy Roach calling himself "Jumping Jimmy Roach."

But two country music stations make sense.

BOB to me seems like some form of mental illness! Especially when they are developing this creepy personality for him with all of the on-air talent speaking for him in the first person. (BOB remembers when Isaly's served those skyscraper cones......BOB doesn't like the HOV lane on 279 North.....yadda yadda). It definitely makes you feel that BOB is not someone you would ever want to meet on a bus, or in a dark alley.

Maybe BOB is a flavor of the month....but 31 Flavors is a business model, isn't it?

K ROCK

It looks like K ROCK has hit rock bottom. Their rating this time is lower than WRRK was at it's worst. We all knew once Howard Stern was gone that K ROCK would tank.

Re: K ROCK

Wonder how long it will last and what Infinty will do with it?

A) That is a HUGE month.

2) Just imagne where they would if they had done this 15 months ago, instead of following up a two-week stunt with nothing.

C) Their 12+ numbers almost equal the combined totals for Star and K-Rock.

As a result, there are all kinds of rumors swirling around Foster Plaza. One of the leading contenders has the Star morning show returning to 93.7 after Diamond Dave bites the dust July 3. Possibly all of Star goes with it.

The REALLY dumb part of the rumor has either 93.7 or 100.7 going Young Country. Can you say "K-Bear" and "Rebel", boys and girls? I thought you could.
______________

The question is why would infinity want to have 2 country stations? When the rebel was on 104.7 was that owned by clear channel?

Dunno, that's why I said it was the really dumb part of the rumor. And no, the Rebel wasn't CC. Not sure who it was, but at that time CC was still a little company in Texas, relatively speaking. I'm trying to remember if anyone else besides Nelson Goldberg and Salem owned that station.
______________

Dumb.

Are they too scared to take on Kiss again?!

GO Bob! I'm happy the station is doing so well.

As for K-Rock... All I can do is laugh.

It looks like Bob took away Star's andience. As Part timer had mentioned before, Bob's ratings this month is almost combined of star and K ROCK. I don't remember the last time WRRK was in the top 10. It might go back a few years ago when Jim Quinn was on in the mornings.

K-Rock is 0.1 points lower than the bottom that WLTJ hit last summer!

It looks like a lot of people enjoy the huge playlists. I wouldn't be surprised if Bob goes up in the 5's the next rating cycle.

I believe at the time, whoever owned Y108 (was it Infinity back then?) also owned the Rebel. Strange to have the same company own two stations with the same format, but Rebel was geared to a much younger, "rowdier" crowd, while Y108 was a bit more conservative. Rebel also used to play these funny little liners about being the "Bee Killer" -- a slam against B-94 at the time. I don't know who owned B-94 back then, but now, it's owned by CBS -- same company that owns 108. If they were both owned by the same company back then, it seems really strange to go after a sister station like that, although it was pretty much a given that Rebel and B-94 listeners were never going to do a whole lot of crossing paths on the radio dial at that time!

I think you're correct

Winning always feels good. But winning in a race where every other competitor is just limping along doesn't prove much. As long as Clear Channel continues to hamstring their other stations to protect 'DVE, and Infinity does the same kind of outstanding job they've done on K-Rock, winning ain't gonna take all that much effort.

Bob's success reminds me of a plow horse running a race againt mules. The plow horse will win that race, but that doesn't make it a thoroughbred.
