Bob Lobel to Oldies 103

Good luck to Karen and Bob . Two very nice down to earth people.

Bob Lobel launches comeback - on radio

Boston’s premier TV sports reporter Bob Lobel is making a comeback - on the radio.

Just five months after leaving WBZ television, Lobel has been hired as a morning show host on the FM radio station Oldies 103.3.

Starting Monday, Lobel and co-host Karen Blake will be running the 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. show.

Nice to see a radio guy go back to his roots.

Wow, I thought that was a joke when I first heard it...

I think he's a good talent, but tell me, how is Bob Lobel "better" than Dale Dorman?

As for "Sports Radio 103.3" don't forget that 103.3 used to BE WEEI FM! ;)

Good luck to Lobel. I actually enjoyed him and Upton back on 'BZ. I ehard him and Karen not long ago in the morning and it wasnt horrible, although im not crazy about her. I think Lobel gets a bum rap around here for his alleged drinking issues.

WBZ (FM 103.3) News/Talk
WODS "Oldies 103(0)", at 103 on your _AM_ dial. :) (38 states, 6 provinces...)

As someone who has more education/experience with television, perhaps someone could explain to me the benefit of sports over news on the AM dial. If the reasoning is broadcast reach alone, is sports programming not more valued in syndication than news? (i.e., keep news/talk on WBZ-AM and develop a sports station on FM and syndicate the sports programming across the region).

Many might argue that neither sports or news is the
"highest and best use" of an FM frequency. With it's
higher sound quality, FM is much more valuable within
a music format of some kind... Doubtful that the above
scenario would ever happen...

Didn't the announcement concerning Bob Lobel joining the morning show at Oldies introduce him as a guest co-host for the Fall? With Zito suddenly missing in action from WXLO, could he be in fact the actual co-host with Karen Blake when the dust clears? Especially given the history between Zito & JayBeau Jones.

Yes, I've mentioned that 3 or 4 times in the "Oldies 103: Dale and June" thread. And you're right, Zito could very well end up in the morning with Karen. I thought he may start immediately in afternoon drive and take Karen's slot. Maybe he has
to wait out a non-compete clause.

I just listened from 8 to 830 and that's a half hour of my life I'll never get back. Thank God the show seems to be music driven because I wasn't impressed with either one of them. Yes, I know it's the first day so things can only get better. They can't go downhill too much.

WODS is billing the pair as "Bob Lobel and Karen Blake" and it should be Karen first. She's running the show. Meanwhile, Kay Erickson did her traffic reports and that's it unless she interacted with Karen and Lobel earlier. June did the 8am news with no interaction at that point.

I'm curious about June's news reports......with Dale starting at 530, June had a 530 report (maybe even 5am, not sure). Now that the morning show starts at 6am, does June still have a 530 report.

I caught the last five minutes. It was brutal. People we'll be late for work if they try to wake up to this guy every morning.

I don't think this is bad as the David Lee Roth debacle since Lobel is not really expected to play the lead, but it was agonizing radio. You take a guy who never did major market morning drive or FM radio on any kind of regular basis and basically throw him to the wolves. Why would he want to embarrass himself like that unless he walked into this with expecations that he won't make it?!

Caught a little of it this morning. I actually enjoyed it. You can tell lobel is not a real radio guy (but does the average listener really care about that?) they probably think it's funny to hear him talking about something other than sports (although did do some Pats/Sox talk). Karen I thought handled him well.

Does anyone know why the main DJ page on the website does not have Karen listed as the morning host and if you go to her bio it still has her listed as being on from 2-6? Meanwhile it has JJ listed as being on from 2-7 with no mention of who is doing 7-9 when they have Mike Finegan starting at 9. They don't seem to be filling in all the spaces.

Non-compete clauses in broadcasting have been illegal in Massachusetts for over a decade.

I heard Patrick Callahan back on for a chunk of the weekend at 7am Sat to about 12 and then from 2pm Sun to 7. He came on on Saturday announcing rather ebuliently "I'm back and so glad to be here". I think he did a fine job at night until he left back in the Spring when everything started going strange. So I wonder is he back just on weekends? Now, "Jessica" is on the short two hour slot at nights between JJ and Mike F. Callahan did the best Thursday Top 20 retro countdown and I wonder if that is now gone?

Maybe the dust is still to settle.

Read the other thread. Syndicated Tom Kent will be on weeknights 7-10 PM. Finegan gets bumped an hour later to 10 PM - 2 AM.

I guess Jessica and Callahan will be weekenders and/or fill-ins. Maybe the Countdown will go live on Saturday mornings with Callahan, in the 7-9 AM slot where it was previously rebroadcast from Thursdays. No way of knowing yet.

Lobel's radio career was interrupted by 30-something years of dabbling in TV. Give him time, it's been a while since his gig with Uppie.

Ah-ha. ALso,note the WODS site is updated with all slots filled. And,Dale Dorman is-for real- back on weekends. Supposedly his first show starts this Saturday as a DJ pal told me. No mentions of time slot, length or what he's going to do, if anything other than intro songs-we shall see. My suspicion and it's mere speculation, is that Callahan will do like a 6-9am(or 7-10am?), maybe even his countdown and Dorman takes over after that?? We shall see. It would be fun if Callahan did his Top 20 on Sunday afternoons, similiar to how the old 66WNBC did a rather entertaining "Music Magazine" back in the early 80's on Sunday afternoons. Callahan did a chunk of last Sunday afternoon. I know their Top 20 Countdown from whatever retro-year was pretty popular when I emailed them regarding it.

Lobel and Blake's banner is also on the site now as well. June Knight is still listed as "Weekdays" crew. She seems to drop in and do the news and then it goes back to Lobel and Blake. It'll be interesting to see what happens after four weeks.

Give the guy a chance to get back in the radio groove. He's been a TV personality forever. You can't expect 2 people who have never done an actual show before to sound flawless their first few times!
