Bogut's New Show

I heard on the grapevine that Jack Bogut has (or will have) a new show in 1360 WMNY from 10-11AM Monday - Thursdays that highlights local businesses for an hour. Is this just an advertisement type of show?

I've heard this sort of thing done on other brokered stations. It's usually sort of an infomercial that "interviews" the business owner and pretends it isn't just a 15-minute commercial.

There was a guy on the infamous WTAN in Tampa Bay who did this years ago. WTAN is the all-time caricature of brokered radio stations, an absolute circus with hosts ranging from strip club DJs trying to be Howard Stern, to drunk New Yorkers doing mini-interventions, psychics, and a sports host who has lied about being a former NFL player and regularly scammed customers by selling them remotes with Tampa Bay Bucs players who never showed. The station was SO bad that it was actually entertaining to listen to (and they carried Imus to draw in a few listeners, which he could do back in the 90's, and that's how I found them).

This guy called himself Jack Armstrong (no, not that Jack Armstrong). He did a show called "Telling it like it is" where he would read a few news stories very badly (I mean literally he could not get through two sentences without stumbling and fumbling), then do these interviews. Sometimes the business owners were as delusional as he was and were all enthusiastic about it, other times they sounded disgusted when they realized this is what they were paying for. It was drive-off-the-road funny at times, although they were dead serious.

Bogut hosting this sort of thing will bring some diginity and professionalism to the effort, which is probably far less entertaining than the buffoonish snake-oil salesman in Florida was.

Do you happen to have an air check of that Florida station? I'd love to hear it. Sometimes radio or TV or movies are so bad they are good.

Many of the first week's guests are businesses that have bought time or are buying time on the other Renda stations so most likely this is just a throwaway type deal to keep those clients and potential future clients happy, that as well as your normal ad package they will give away an hour of time on 1360. Not really a bad idea, might as well get some use out of that signal.

I wonder how much money he gave up when he left KDKA for WTAE? I didn't know he was still on the air until this thread.

The WTAE move got him more money than he was making at KDKA. WTAE was combined radio and TV.

But how long did that last? He was definitely the King of Drivetime when he had 50K watts behind him.

I think he had a five-year contract when he jumped. What makes you think it would have been solely his decision to stay at KDKA as long as he wanted?

Sounds to me like he is going to be the next Joe Gearing.
Nice 'joe gearing" refrence. Ii worked with Joe at 1130 in Brownsville in 1991-92/ I think he sold time to every chiropractor in fayette county. He also sold a 5 time a week slot to a Jewelry store in Connellsville. He made the store owner sound like he was a leading gem expert in the western world. Joe could sell ice in Alaska. do you know if he is still alive?

Wait......hold on a sec.....

Did Bogut jump to WTAE AM on purpose or did KDKA AM let him go? I have always been confused about that, even though I am a Bogut fan.

Bogut left KD for Ardmore Blvd. in 1983 for a five-year deal, worth a million dollars, and the opportunity to do TV in addition to radio. He was at KD from 1968 to 1983 and his contract was not renewed by Hearst in 1988. It was Jack's decision to leave Westinghouse. The chance to do TV was cited at the time as the main reason for the move. $200K per in 1983 could have played a part, too.

Bogut went right to Renda (on WSHH) after the Hearst deal was over and has been there ever since.

He was actually "on the beach" for a while, but, yes, his next radio gig was at WSHH.

loeper - When did you work at WASP?
I worked there from july 1991 to Feb 1992....I "hosted" the morning news and talk slot...and attempted to sell air time the rest of the day to business people in Uniontown. I also filled in numerous times on there local talk show that ran from 9 to noon. it was called the "Bee LIne" and the average age of the callers was about 103. Jim Humes and Kim Smith were , shall I say, wierd to work for. BYW, My wife , Barb , also worked there during that time , she did news mid days and pm drive.

Is Kim Smith still around?
I enjoyed working with him & Jim Humes at AM 1130 WASP.
Is Jim Humes still around? I remember him telling me years ago that his health was not as good and if he got the right deal, he would be out of there.

I worked with Joe at WQTW Latrobe ...I believe he has since gone on to his reward.

Joe Gearing is Alive and Well and Has shows on 1480am & 620am

I just spoke with Joe Gearing on Saturday. He is fine and has weekly shows on the radio.
