Bombing at Boston Marathon.

What a terrible and sad event today indeed. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the folks at KROI, who has been wall to wall coverage of the incident from the get go with only breaks for local traffic and weather spots on the 9's and the TOH ID. Tuned to KTRH, and it was normal talk show programming. KUHF, when I checked, was giving updates from BBC America over their air.

This is when KROI shines. The very first station to ditch their normal programming and go straight to the national ABC News feed just after the reports were coming out. It may not sound like a big deal to some, but here's one listener that is appreciative. Well done, KROI staff and Radio One.

It was a smart move for NEWS 92.1 and its well experienced staff. They broke in first before KTRH & KUH-FM did.

Many thumbs up to News 92 for their fast and extensive coverage. It's so good to know there is somewhere to go for news. That's how it's done. Good job

Ditto regarding the above comments...there was at least a 5-year period in Houston where there was NO radio coverage of severe weather or accidents. You could hear sirens echoing all over town and nary a mention of the who, what or why on the radio...very frustrating for someone like me who worked in news (News 24 Houston)...and sounds like the new PD at KROI has been experimenting as of late with the formatics adding the 4x per hour recap of the top stories, changed sounders and introductions...

NEWS 92 also stepped up with wall to wall coverage of the explosion in West when the AM stations had nothing but talking heads ranting about immigration and gun control themes. There is a time and place for that, but not when there is breaking news and you want to be called a news station.

***There is a time and place for that, but not when there is breaking news and you want to be called a news station.***

True enough, but you seem to be under the impression that Houston has an AM station that qualifies as a "news" station. KTRH lost that distinction a long time ago. "News" as we all understand it no longer exists on the AM dial in Houston. Talk radio has taken over.

News 92 FM is now the only commercial news outlet in Houston. KUHF has the non-commercial public radio news side nailed down. And that's just the way it is now.

You are correct, but remember that the talk station still bills itself as
AM 740 KTRH Newsradio...Houston's News, Weather and Traffic Station. Sure, we all know better but they still insist on perpetuating that image as the go to source for news, which certainly is a case of living in the past.

You call it "living in the past". I call it delusional. Somebody at KTRH really thinks it is still a "news" station, and I think we can all guess who that is.

I'd call it winning. KTRH continues to fare far better in the ratings than this station you guys insist on comparing it to all the time.

I enjoy talk radio in all of its forms. I enjoy the political shows, the car shows, the financial shows, etc.

The wheel of news formats like on News 92 are dreadfully boring. How any of them could build any TSL except during a major catastrophe is beyond me. There's a reason CNN's Headline News is dead. Apparently radio didn't get the memo.

If there were truth in advertising, KTRH would drop the Newsradio label and call themselves Moron radio. That would be fitting, given much of their lineup.

Well, that might help get their ratings down to News 92 levels.

That would be because it is a conservative talk station, of which we have multitudes of people within this City that share the same opinions. KTRH is the number one AM in the market, there is no denying that. Misrepresenting the station as a news outlet is what we constantly debate about. I'm certainly not saying that KTRH is foolish for the programming that they air, only that they think we are foolish enough to believe that it is truly "Newsradio" anymore.

The only reason the station uses the handle now was because of the debut of KROI as "News 92". As I'm sure you recall, it had rebranded to what it truly is these days as "Newstalk 740". Obviously, KROI made someone nervous enough to switch back quick, fast, and in a hurry...as my Granny used to say. Why make use of the news station presentation, if you're not going to deliver the news? I know one thing after going straight to KTRH for information on the bombings, and that is I won't be making the same mistake again. Old habits die hard, but they do eventually die. So has KTRH as my go-to news source. I sincerely hope others will follow.

This is exactly right. Cheap Channel dismantled the KTRH newsroom some time ago and left a skeleton staff in morning drive. Once KROI hit the market, they re-branded themselves as NEWSRADIO again, which we all know is a lie, and attempted to hold on to what news audience they had. There is no one saying that the steady diet of Michael Berry sandwiched in between a bunch of right wing kooks is not successful, the argument is about who really does the news and who plays like they do.

The listening public has voted with their ears, and ad buyers have voted with their wallets. KTRH continues to win the war, and KROI continues to go nowhere.

From a business standpoint, if you can dismantle the expensive newsroom and continue to beat the supposed competition handily with a simple marketing move, that to me sounds like yet another win for KTRH.

Apparently, the only people who care about this non-issue are on this board. The public listens to KTRH.

Actually, last time I looked at the 25-54's, it looked more like the public listens to KUHF.

All the more reason KROI is a waste of a frequency and can't get any traction. Its potential audience is already well served by a commercial free outlet.

Oh well. Radio One will figure it out eventually, or go bankrupt. Hard to tell which will happen first.

So is this trolling bit a part of the loyalty oath you took when you got the job at Clear Channel?

No trolling here. An honest, objective opinion. Sorry it doesn't fit the KTRH and conservative bashing mold most here subscribe to.

I last worked for Clear Channel over ten years ago.

OK...it just seems like you hate KROI like it slept with your girlfriend, like it never paid back that money it borrowed from you. It's a very personal, intense hatred for someone who seems to have no dog in this fight.
