Boom! We're getting classic hip hop...

Here's the actual stream URL http://roneb92.wordpress.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=ione_listen_live

Two minutes of listening was enough to tell me this won't be a preset in my truck. More garbage radio for Houston. I'll keep listening to 103.5 Bob-FM Austin via stream and wish for the days when Houston had good radio.

Could care less about this station or it's format. **YAWNS**

Agree 100%

So far this station rules playing some really good classic traxx to the heaters go listen to your over played 70s 80s 90s pop and rock. I have already heard 3 traxx that should not be in their playlist

What about the air conditioners? What should they do? And then there's the gas furnaces to think of...

I kid, DJ, of course. I listened for about an hour, and you know, it's not half bad. I cranked it up when they played Biz Markie's "Just A Friend", I won't lie. It's not really my cup of tea. I was a long haired rock n' roll type when these songs were new, and somethings will never change, lol. I'll certainly check in on it from time to time, heck I might even catch Biz Markie again, but yeah...my dialing into 92-1 days have come to an end.

Glad you got that classic hip hop station you have been wanting on this board for years. Enjoy! I'm happy, I got me a new format change file out of it. :D

I like it so far. I'm glad that after all these years of having to suffer with only 1 station, we hip hop and R&B fans FINALLY have variety and a choice in this city to listen to our music!! I think Boom92 sounds pretty good, reminds me of what The Boxx used to be during its glory days.

And to those complaining, if you hate the music or the format so much, don't listen to it!! It's that simple!

Now they just need fix the range issues to the north and Boom92 will be a top 5 station in no time

The CANNOT fix it. There is nothing to fix. The station only has 21,000 watts. That's why it was broadcasting in mono for the news format. By going mono, the signal can get out a little. Turn that stereo on and limit the coverage. It doesn't matter what format is put on this frequency, it will face the same problem: coverage. I say enjoy it while you can. IN another two years, if it isn't sold, there will be another format. For me it's not about 'hating' the format. It's about reality.

Its not that we hate the format, because some of the songs are okay -- they're from back in the day when rap music was somewhat positive and had good background music (e.g., not about hatin' and cop killing). What I don't like, and from the comments see that others agree, is that Houston is missing a oldies/classic hits station. Every other major city has one.

That response was for those who wanted to post ignorant responses like they could care less about the station or "its now a waste of a frequency" for example. And trust me, I kinda agree with you on a lack of a oldies station too especially when it's in almost every other market.

If you want oldies then message every broadcaster in town until you get one. LOL it might work...

On a sidenote, San Antonio's new Hot 104.5 is leaning really old school, now. Could this be a new thing?

Yep....Adjacent channels KETX and KUHA prevent it prevent it from ever going higher in ERP at the 2000ft height..the only reason they moved from the 100KW/1000ft tower off 288 north of Angleton to the Liverpool tower was to get a lower electric bill with the taller tower and lower ERP but to me, that probably hurt its building penetration in Houston (south and downtown)..turning on the stereo pilot decreases the S/N out at the fringe by 23db..most car radios will blend to mono anyway to compensate but this doesnt help 92.1's signal...the formats they ran at the old tower didnt cut it...(except the KRTS format...then Radio One sunk $72 million into it...that was ridiculous for a C1 signal unless it had been downtown).....

A translator or a signal to the north might help (I wonder about KVST)....oh well, I am in agreement with Chuck..I wish RO good luck..

They need to stop playing anything for like 2006 to 2008 like Kayne West and Sean Paul these 2 artist are for KBXX not Boom92

2nd track Grandmaster Flash The Message Ice Cube Version

It's Ice Cube feat. Das EFX "Check Yo Self" (Remix). Flash's "The Message" is a completely different song altogether, "DJ".

Anyways, I heard the launch and was surprised. It was much better than I expected from Radio One. Hopefully they'll focus on '90s hip hop, which is considered the golden age. Anything after 1999 should be played less often. As far as format durability, they could add some '90s r&b into the mix in the future. Then again, what do I know?

I thought RO might go for something like the R&B Oldies format on sister KSOC in DFW, but perhaps demographic differences here in Houston pushed them in another direction.

Not sure if there is room in the market for Boom, Beat and Boxx, especially with Boom on an inferior signal. I have a feeling that we'll be looking at another format flip in a couple of years. Boom might be the last effort for RO on 92.1; if it fails they should probably eat their losses and sell the station, or at least LMA it out.

The signal might work well as a simulcast with a northern stick--for instance, Cox could buy it as a simulcast of 97.1, or perhaps make it the southern simulcast of 106.9 and then launch something new on 107.5.

At least Boom doesn't require 47 employees, so costs have been slashed.

As I am very definitely not the target demographic, I'll be deleting 92.1 off of my car presets (again)...to be replaced with...I have no idea...

As much as we baby boomers want to wish rap away, it's been mainstream for nearly 30 years now, long enough for its first decade to be "classic." It's what a whole lot of teens of all races and ethnicities were listening to in the '90s. This isn't a niche or a fad format, it's the future of oldies/classic hits. Whether a companion format featuring the rock that the rhythmic CHRs wouldn't play back in the day will emerge is doubtful, as the demographics may well be too narrow.

I doubt this is the future of oldies / classic hits. I certainly don't fit the demographic. And outside of cities that have a large black population, you find a lot of oldies / classic rock stations that actually advertise "no rap". I spent ten years in Florida, a couple of stations at least were running promotions like that. For every positive classic rap hit - and there are a few - there is garbage like "I like big butts". I hear perversion like that and I switch the station. If you had a classic rap station that avoids perverted lyrics, you might get me to listen. Otherwise - another black hole on the radio dial. Thank goodness they don't run HD, so I have a decent shot at hearing 92.3. As for presets - I never had one on 92.1. Not when it was gospel, not when it was news. The last time I cared about 92.1 - it was advertising itself as the first Houston station to play CD's back in the early 80's. I was looking for music stations after the death of KILT 610 top-40. And 92.1 had a pretty good playlist, and the CD's sounded great on the air.

I'll be keeping it on my presets. Hearing a lot of songs I've spun at parties over the years. It's cool

Signal is decently worse today and they are already playing commercials

No real jocks yet they play 2 or 3 traxx and then commercials ugh untill they are using the jocks they should be playing 5 to 7 traxx before a commercial break.

Just said be back in 2 min for a commercial break played 2 commercials and back to music break lasted like 40 sec LOL
