BORDER MEDIA SELL OFF

looking up other websites to find out when border media started to sell off radio station

kfon (klgo) aiustin , approx 2010 or 2011, kwow waco,approx 2010 0r 2011

laredo stations aprrox jan or fed 2012
austin stations (4 out of 5) may to july 2012
kznx,kwnx,ktxx,-sports kxxs (kvlr)-emf religious
san antonio stations next in line.

i did forget about the rio grande stations being sold after the laredo cluster and before the mostly austin cluster. thanks fredcantu.

march or april 2012 rio grande valley stations.

and the low power tv station in laredo, to the cbs affilate.

The SA cluster have taken down all the names of the stations on the front Border Media sign that can be seen from the street. o_O

first to go aprox 6-29-12 ,1530 kznx ( i forgot the company that bought out kznx) 92.5 kxxs (kvlr emf) , kwnx, ktxx 1260, 104.9 (total austin sports) and finally 8-23-12 kxbt (kutx) 98.9 to u.t. next san antonio cluster.

There are some recent developments concerning the BMP Austin sell-off:

92.5 KVLR: Sale to EMF for $750K is pending FCC approval, but the "upgrade" has been approved. This involves change of COL from Elgin to Sunset Valley and relocation of the antenna with only slight changes in power and height. The purchase agreement calls for EMF to pay an additional $250K once the move is made and license to cover is granted.

104.9 KTXX: Sale to Total Austin Sports Radio for $2.5M is pending FCC approval; price includes KWMX 1260. Change of KWNX's COL from Taylor to Elgin to replace departing KVLR has been approved.

105.5 K288FJ translator: Purchase from Big Bend Broadcasting for $250K has been approved. This facility was supposed to be a "fill-in" translator for 104.9 KTXX, but would not qualify if relocation of the KTXX antenna occurs (a construction permit was granted in February).

How long will it take for BORDER MEDIA to sell off all it's San Antonio properties? Someone on this R-I board said BORDER MEDIA will have buyers for their stations by next year but this is not much of
a time line to go by.

Read over here in the comments they're not being sold, or is this false? http://radioinsight.com/blog/headlines/netgnomes/70330/chr-war-to-heat-up-san-antonio/

I think this is the post you are referring to:

As usual, people on the “boards” have no idea what they’re talking about. Border Media Trust in San Antonio is not for sale. They sold off all of the other properties, and have invested another 1.5 million this year into upgrades of the market. The SA cluster made 5 million dollars in profit last year, and will do similar this year. The “Trust” or Investment Bank is not selling San Antonio for maybe 5 years, depending on the continued return of revenue and profit. Its JACK FM is one the most successful in the country; just yesterday was # 2 Adults 18-54! It’s sad that most of the thoughts of what’s happening in the radio markets on these boards are from people that are either out of work and bitter, or those that have not even worked in PPM markets and have no idea what they are talking about.

Who to say if the above post is true or false? ???

While it is true that the cluster billing was around $15 million, the Border cluster is the 4th in billing. The Cox, CC and UVN clusters do $30 million, $26 million and $24 million each. Given the number of stations in the cluster, that's a decent but not superior performance.

As the selling, it's often the hope or desire of a bankruptcy administrator to fix the problems caused by the prior operation having run out of cash and to get a better price for the properties. So investing in improving the cluster may simply be like putting a fresh coat of paint on a house before putting it on sale... an investment that will pay off soon.

If it's the thread I think it is, keep in mind the person who said Border would sell by next year. He's not right very often.

After BMP filed for bankruptcy, Border Media indicated it was in a rush to sell the smaller markets but not so much Austin and San Antonio. We obviously know they started selling Austin about the same time they sold Laredo and the RGV. So, it makes sense that people would think San Antonio will go soon, too.

I fully expect Border to sell San Antonio. I couldn't put a timeline on it, though. The answer to how long it will take for them to sell those properties is however long it takes them to get an offer they think is fair. There's clearly been a thaw in the banks' lending freeze, but whether they'll lend what Border Media wants for the properties after being burned so many times before is the open question.

Let's compare Border Media to 7-11 stores in the late 80s.

Let's see back in the 80s 7-11 had 3 locations that I remember off the top of my head,

1. Nacodogches and Wayward Dr
2. Harry Wurzbach and Corrine Dr
3. Broadway and Nacodogches (now a Flower Shop since 1999)

In 1990, 7-11 filed for bankruptcy and Stop And Go (now Valero) bought the San Antonio 7-11's leaving the closest 7-11 to San Antonio on Guadalupe in San Marcos, and Congress at William Cannon in Austin.

They BMP, could in theory keep some properties after the bankruptcy has been resolved. The big question is which ones? If that is true I expect BMP to only hold 102.7, 550, and maybe 94.1
all the others SOLD by next year.

I would have to look at the PACER records (Bankruptcy filings are Public Domain) next time I have free time to visit the Federal Courthouse with a pen and paper to write the stuff down as PACER look ups are free there, but online they charge per page, per search, inquiry, etc.

Closest 7-11s to San Antonio:

7-ELEVEN (#35800) 18900 IH 35 NEW BRAUNFELS,TX 78132

7-ELEVEN (#35802) 900 ROY RICHARD RD SCHERTZ,TX 78154

7-ELEVEN (#35804) 9084 FM 78 CONVERSE,TX 78109

Judging by their store number and their locations, they're creeping back toward San Antonio.

And I was looking at 1990/2005 data, LOL! Maybe in 15+ years Border will buy back all it's properties.

The Congress at William Cannon location is now a Money Box check cashing place. FYI.

In terms of signals, that does look weak. But in terms of signals, isn't the BMP collection a pretty poor bunch? 103.1 has better coverage of the Victoria market than San Antonio -- and from a recent trip to the market, it didn't really seem like 104.1 and 95.7 were too prime, either. Is the cluster's billing based primarily around 550, 102.7, and 94.1?
