Boston Radio Ratings September 2020.

Just so David is in on the joke, WRKO morning man Jeff Kuhner , who was doing mid days a while back, was crowing one time after the management had moved his time slot that he was going to be syndicated or some such BS..

and lest we not forget the numerous promos aired with listeners claiming "YEAH! WE'RE GOING NATIONAL!"

My BFF Tired loves Kuhner (in a semi-sexual way)

Kuhner Ratings

As I have said before I listen to Kunhner for the pure comedic value of the show. On Wednesday he said that when he joined his family to watch the debate his wife had ABC on. Kuhner said No No No we are not watching ABC because I do not want to give them the ratings. Obviously Crazy Kuhner has no idea how the TV ratings system works.

First, looking at any sports station since March is useless.

Second, that station was part of the three-company transaction when CBS sold to Entercom and then spun to Beasley. Obviously, there would be changes in such a situation.

Could you elaborate on these points a bit more, I'm not quite following.

To the first point I would say that 98.5 (the other Boston sports station) has retained their share during Covid. Although I'm sure their ad revenue is way down for a variety of reasons, per their share they still continue to absolutely crush WEEI, routinely doubling or even tripling the daytime competition's shows head to head.

And to the second point, 98.5 was an Entercom property for a hot second before peeling off to Beasley. WEEI has long been in the Entercom family, so other then moving into 98.5's old studios not sure what the changes you reference would be that affected the station's ability to perform. Does that imply having their own production or marketing budgets cut to save $$ or is it other things?

I believe WEEI FM will broadcast most every Tampa Bay Bucs game this year.
I wonder if they see a ratings boost from that as opposed to whatever they used to do on Sunday afternoon ?

Entercom, as part of their merger with CBS, was required to divest of several Boston Radio properties. iHeart received: WKAF, WZLX, WRKO and WBZ-AM. Entercom traded WBZ-FM to Beasley for WMJX.

They couldn't keep Sports Hub in part because of revenue. Dept of Justice couldn't give one company a tremendously huge market share so 98.5 was sent to Beasley and Entercom got WMJX, popular with women.
Merger was late 2017. Red Sox were still fairly popular despite how huge the Pats are. They won 2018 World Series.
More recently, last place.Pandemic-shortened season with no fans in stands.

Changes with regard to the on-air lineup have quite a bit to do with WEEI's ratings woes.

To blame their soft ratings strictly on the lack of live play-by-play is misguided, IMO, especially since the MLB season got underway many weeks ago.

Keep in mind that when the ratings are released, it is about 20 days after the last day of the 28 day survey period. And then, it's a weighted average of the 4 weeklies that make up the book, taking us almost 7 weeks back for the first week of the release.

Not sure I understand your point. I'm referring to on-air host changes that occurred much earlier in the year, and the baseball season started in late July.

Many Sports stations have seen big ratings rebounds since the spring bottom. Example: WSCR Chicago. Example #2: KNBR San Francisco.

I do completely understand that big programming changes at personality talk stations often do not result in seamless transitions from a listening standpoint, and that some seasoning time is often required for listeners to warm up to the new on-air talent (or reconfigured talent, as the case may be). We'll see if WEEI's ratings improve markedly between now and the end of the year. If they fail to do so, then I'd say the station clearly has a programming issue that needs to be corrected.

With the Patriots on the competing station, the Red Sox done for the year, no local NHL or NBA to talk about until December or January (both leagues plan to delay the start of the next season), and a market with minimal interest in college sports, I can't see the next couple of months as promising for any rebound for WEEI-FM, no matter who is doing the talking.

Maybe. The gloating over WEEI's ratings is likely coming from fans of the previous morning show that was blown up after a series of issues. The current morning show is obviously far less controversial, and therefore not as popular in the ratings. So from EEI's point of view, they may be lower in the ratings, but they're also getting less heartburn.

Not sure I'm understanding your point now. The Greg Hill show debuted at the end of July 2019, obviously more then a year ago. The mid-day and afternoon shows have been untouched for years (other then recently bumping Fitzy from the morning show to part time mid-day). There's nothing to suggest that based on their current talent they'll see an improvement.

Kirk & Callahan toward the end were under regular Red Sox scrutiny for their criticism of the front office. Henry, Kennedy & Co. can't take heat and pressured 'EEI management to control K&C. Contrast w/the way F&M (esp. F) freelt go after Patriots management.

Not to mention fewer Migraine Headaches! :D

I have a few comments

a)I swore Matty was on XKS since Fall 79

b) II wonder how WMVX is doing at least in the Lawrence Ma area

Globe article and Wiki entry on him say he started as Kiss morning host in Jan of 1981 (the hiring was in summer of 1980...that year, he was on Ch 5's 5 All Night Live)
