Aw maaaan!
I just went and bought two of them after demoing one..I am such a sucker for mics..and here's why this one seems to be the holy grail for me personally.
Hey you guys all know I have been tinkering with various tube mics for quite some time now..MXL's, AKG, Neumann etc..I have been changing out tubes (with some amazing sucesses) but I need a "good to go to" mic that i can afford at least TWO of because of the different studio locations and my desire to make sure everything matches. I needed TWO, and had only ONE of my prized original VF14 U47..that I sold in order to get the down payment on out Atlanta/Madison, GA studio..(made a hefty profit, but I miss that mic) I went SUPER cheap and figured that if I got an MXL sounding as good as a higher priced spread i could get FOUR of them..That way if one went down for some reason I could swap them out and keep on working. Flawed thinking on my part. I went expensive CLONE, and got Gunter Wagner's U47 that is amazing..really a nice mic, but again a little steep for TWO of them at over 4k each. I tried the TLM49, and the C12VR..both good for certain things
I have three types of styles that clients require. Soft-Sell retail, station imaging, and Hard-Sell retail..For hard Sell..the Sennheiser MKH416 is a champ and a half..for Imaging the TLM49 was good, but still sounded not only a little noisy, but kind of weird (phasey, artifacted and boxy) And the soft-sell mic was that crazy MXL 960 but it had an artificial low-end and was sibilint.
I got the Brauner Phantom C from a pal of mine in nashville..he let me try it last week. I loved it. Just the right balance of upper mids for me..nice round low end, and it can take a pretty robust SPL limit too..It was excellent for all three styles. And no tube. I put it through the tube preamp, and then process it lightly with the AIRCORP 500TV..very clean, very punchy, and last week i got more compliments from producers on the retail ad agency level..
So I ordered TWO Brauner "Anniversary Edition" Phantom C mics yesterday from Mercenary Audio. Really good people, and a fair price.
They will be my main mic choice.
I will never try another microphone...ever.......never.........I mean it.........I swear......
