Brauner Phantom

Aw maaaan!

I just went and bought two of them after demoing one..I am such a sucker for mics..and here's why this one seems to be the holy grail for me personally.

Hey you guys all know I have been tinkering with various tube mics for quite some time now..MXL's, AKG, Neumann etc..I have been changing out tubes (with some amazing sucesses) but I need a "good to go to" mic that i can afford at least TWO of because of the different studio locations and my desire to make sure everything matches. I needed TWO, and had only ONE of my prized original VF14 U47..that I sold in order to get the down payment on out Atlanta/Madison, GA studio..(made a hefty profit, but I miss that mic) I went SUPER cheap and figured that if I got an MXL sounding as good as a higher priced spread i could get FOUR of them..That way if one went down for some reason I could swap them out and keep on working. Flawed thinking on my part. I went expensive CLONE, and got Gunter Wagner's U47 that is amazing..really a nice mic, but again a little steep for TWO of them at over 4k each. I tried the TLM49, and the C12VR..both good for certain things

I have three types of styles that clients require. Soft-Sell retail, station imaging, and Hard-Sell retail..For hard Sell..the Sennheiser MKH416 is a champ and a half..for Imaging the TLM49 was good, but still sounded not only a little noisy, but kind of weird (phasey, artifacted and boxy) And the soft-sell mic was that crazy MXL 960 but it had an artificial low-end and was sibilint.

I got the Brauner Phantom C from a pal of mine in nashville..he let me try it last week. I loved it. Just the right balance of upper mids for me..nice round low end, and it can take a pretty robust SPL limit too..It was excellent for all three styles. And no tube. I put it through the tube preamp, and then process it lightly with the AIRCORP 500TV..very clean, very punchy, and last week i got more compliments from producers on the retail ad agency level..

So I ordered TWO Brauner "Anniversary Edition" Phantom C mics yesterday from Mercenary Audio. Really good people, and a fair price.

They will be my main mic choice.

I will never try another microphone...ever.......never.........I mean it.........I swear......

What's the story on the UMT70s by Microtech-Gefell? ::)

The Lawson L47mp is a great U47 clone at only $2000.

Don't know, but I doubt you can go wrong. I'm told that the MG stuff is magical. I hear that they have the original Neumann quality (it is, afterall, George Neumann's project). The quality of the original U87 (not the Ai version), U49 and U47. But no firsthand experience.

I am told that the MG version of the famous M7 is now mylar as opposed to PVC..Mylar stretches in only one direction..PVC in all directions. An older MG 170 might be the ticket..but it would have to be a beaut to beat this Brauner.

I had the Lawson 47..it sounded "grainy" to me..and did not handle a close mic'ed louder delivery.

Jeff,
I KNEW you were the man to try this mic out. The reviews I read had pretty much made up my mind, but now that you've signed off on it... I can't ignore the mic.

Lookout eBay here I come! LOL!

Ok....how about this one.... Wunderaudio's CM7 . Too rich for my blood. Just curious if you'd heard anything.

And...if you had $4-5k to spend on a pre-amp/channel strip and mic... what would you buy?

LOL! Actually yes. I was watching that particular auction. TOO FUNNY!

If u dont like it...let's talk. I might be interested.

Also currently bidding on a TLM193. Don't bid against me, lol!

LOL Sorry, if it doesn't suit my bedroom voice, i'll get back to you,but heck the way Jeff describes it , i'm getting wet just thinking about it.I was looking at the TLM49 but at this price, plus the reviews on this mic were very good,i'm a player..

Is that the one with the "slight dent" in the screen? Dirk Brauner can fix for you if you like. Nice guy and a mic freak. That was a deal man!

yep, that's the one.I may get dick to fix it.that was a good deal.

sounds pretty darn nice to me.very warm mic.the more you tinker with it the better it'll sound, placement, distance,etc..sure beats the tlm49 IMHO

It is especially sensitive just to the right of center for some reason..better proximity effect, and less chance at distortion in the mids..(Klaus Hine has told me that FET mics show distortion more quickly than a tube mic) It takes a little finesse to figure out the sweet spot on this thing, but it is nice and fat where it needs to be...To keep it from being boomy on louder (car dealer delivery) I back off about 8in. It drops a little low end out, increases the upper mids, and still keeps sibilinace at bay..great for TV! Requires a quiet room however.

It does have a nice sound to it. It's very natural sounding and doesn't seem to have a lot of its own character (not a bad thing).

FETs and tubes distort differently. Tube distortion is a rich pleasing sound, while FET distortion isn't very pleasing, in most cases. Tubes also distort very gradually, whereas FET distortion is pretty much on or off.

I like the sound of the Brauner. Clean and smooth.

sure....now I just need to get one myself, lol!

Talked to Marty at the distributor..they had three Phantom AEs left..and now they're gone (((poof))) You might find one on Ebay. I found out becasue my mics came with certificates of autehnticity, signed by Dirk Brauner..and one of mine had the wrond S/N not matching the mic. Marty found mine, and we are swapping them. he said he sold the last one. They are making no more..BUT Brauner has come out with something called a Phaeton..that is close.
