breaking BRW 103.3 to amp format, 60s-70s-80s to hd2

Just heard from somebody in LA who says CBS made this move to stop Clear Channel from going Top 40 on 101.7.

Bigger bombshell is CC may just forfeit the deposit and stop the sale.

Fenway 1912:

Clear Channel has other options for 101.7, and besides, they already do Top-40 at WXKS-107.9......unless their plan was to move "Kiss" to 101.7 and put talk on the bigger 107.9 signal.

Now seriously, why would CC do that to the #1 station in the market and one of the country's top billers? Put it on a 1/3 signal and move a talk format that has a cume of 110k to the class B stick?

Sometimes I think people on this board just throw crap at the wall and see what gets a response.

That is the dumbest idea I have ever heard. Anyone remember that this is a business, and they're in it to make money? And if you have a successful business in a good location you don't move it to the back of the shopping center behind the dumpster?

No way in hell would CC take Kiss off 107.9, end of story.

This likely means that come November, WBMX-104.1 will become CBS Radio's all-Christmas station in tyown.

This move will probably also give a boost to WROR-105.7 this Summer, and perhaps lead Greater Media to flip WMJX-106.7 to all-Christmas this November (in most other cities, it's the Soft AC format, like WMJX, that goes all-Christmas).

With the strong likelyhood of two "new" all-Christmas stations this Fall, look for Mix and Magic to go quite early---maybe November 1st.

A wild card in all this:

Could CBS Radio decide to drop the paid programming from WBZ-1030 on Saturday nights in favor of a local oldies show (with emphasis ob n the 1955-70 era) from 7:05 P.M. to 12 Midnight??

This could keep an oldies presence on CBS's analog stations, boost 'BZ's Saturday-night listenership, and allow one WODS announcer (I'm thinking J.J. Wright) to stay on and do the Saturday oldies show (and maybe imaging for the new "103-3 AMP_", given his great set of pipes!).

Biggest blunder? In trying to knock down the CHR wall of KISS and Jamn, CBS has left a hole in the market. Now CC can launch Oldies on 101.7. And if CBS drops the WODS call letters, then you can say hello to 101.7 WODS!

speculation on new call letters for the new Amp???
There's really no reason to change the calls. It's only once an hour that the FCC requires them. Also, the WODS format is being relegated to the HD2 and on-line stream (minus any personalities). WROR would be crazy not to reach out to the former WODS listenership. They should consider going to a more "Top 40" presentation of Classic Hits, with jingles and upbeat jock patter. The current on-air lineup of WROR would be more than able to go that route. Some of the former WODS personalities would be perfect to add to the current WROR lineup.

I think the key is that they have to be live and local 24/7. Something Kiss is not right now. CBS cannot pussyfoot around with this like they kind of have in other markets. They need to cause some excitement. The problem with whtt was it sounded like just another top 40 nothing special. I remember traveling to NY and listening to the brand new (at the time) z100 and being blown away. That's the feeling they need to generate with Amp 1033 to have any chance.

Although Lance Venta of RadioInsight seems to differ and thinks that the URL should be as it appears in bold type above...

Correction to the Boston Radio Watch copy of the CBS press release (not to the original poster): the URL for the new CHR should be: http://www.1033AmpRadioBoston.com (was redirecting to a GoDaddy.com page; now nothing).

The Boston Radio Watch copy of the press release had (I believe) the wrong URL printed, but clicking on it in the press release will direct you to (I believe) the correct web address.

Copy of original CBS press release in this Boston Radio Watch article link here.

Went to CBS Radio's site and pulled up the press release there - see here; that version is (I believe) correct.

By Noon on Thursday we'll know for sure - just have to test 'em both!

Going head to head with Matty in the Morning? Isn't that like starting a land war in Asia or going against a Sicilian when death is on the line?

I mean, seriously. CBS had easy pickings when they set the SportsHub against WEEI. Taking on Matty is like bringing a knife to a gun fight. A plastic knife. No, a SPORK to a gun fight. ;D

I don't know who is doing the morning show for CBS's top-40 WXRK-92.3 ("Now") in New York, but I wouldn't be completely surprised if 103.3 (whatever call letters it gets) simulcasts it.

That could save a lot of money.

On the other hand, how about a "Maximum Hitz" morning show with reduced commercials and little (if any) talk/news/weather/traffic??

This doesn't leave a "hole" that hasn't been there for quite a while already. WODS has not been an "oldies" station for four years, since they dropped the word "oldies" from all usage in 2008, and dropped all '50s/early '60s music over the past decade and became a "classic hits" station.

With very slight tweaking, WROR's format will (and already pretty much does) fill any "hole" left by the departure of the recent WODS classic hits format, and I don't see anyone launching any new "older oldies" stations nowadays in today's demographics.
