"Broadcasting from the McDonalds Studio"

What the hell is up with this hokey crap? I've noticed lately, more and more, you are hearing this on most of the Hartford area CC stations. I also remember hearing for a while, something like "Broadcasting from the studios of the (such and such) law firm" on WWYZ.

I don't think you have to be a radio professional or radio junkie to instantly realize that this is a TOTAL crock of crap.

Opinions?

KC101 broadcasts from the F.Y.E. studios and ESPN Radio 1300 broadcasts from the closet...I mean, the Budwieser studios.

Corpratism. Just as pro sports teams play at places like Nextel Stadium, instead of parks named after owners, or famous coaches or the like, radio has adapted. The stupidest thing I've heard on radio were the two second ads called blinks. I'm waiting for the .5 second ad next.

I have to disagree with you Info-
BTW/ Kiss has been doing the McDonalds studio for nearly a year.
Here's what I think...When properly selected the studio sponsorship can add credibility to the station. I think F.Y.E. is AWESOME.....Good pick by the PD. McDonalds...SILLY BA-DAH-DAH- DA-DA I'm NOT lovin it.
ESPN and BUDWEISER.....C'mon man thats GREAT.
Please remember that ESPN itself has been doing this for quite some time.
The phone line they do interviews on is the "ONSTAR hot line" They even have a sponsor for their email box.
As for those silly little blink spots....(idol music) voice over simply says "tonight on fox" We all get it oh yeah Idol is on tonight on Fox.
I don't need 58 seconds of really bad singing and rudeness from Simon....That little piece of music triggers all of that in my brain....Idol tonight on fox.
Can I ask you this Info...Why so negative about change? Are you angry that you can't load up the cart deck and fire 'em off for 10 minutes so you can brag about 50 minutes of what ever you do?
If I was a name brand like Fox...I would LOVE this. When they first tested this Blink thing it was for fox's "24" instantly their numbers grew...By a very impressive number I might add. I can't tell the exact amout but, I remember it being pretty impressive.
Ba-dah-da-da...da
You know you just thought "I'm lovin it" in your head and that was just from reading the jingle.
THAT'S taking your brand and getting MORE for LESS.
Just because a corporate company does it does NOT make it suck.
Have you EVER heard somebody (a listener) complain that the message was too short? It fits nicely between 2 elements and doesn't hurt a thing not even the flow of the music
;-)

Well, you've got DRC-FM broadcasting from a Kenner's Close-n-play, so why not the MacDonald's studios?

Integrity my friend as well as pride
BTW/ what is Kenner's close and play?

THAT IS AWESOME!!!
thanks for the trip down memory lane "Info"....
I can't believe I didn't get it right away.
Anybody know where I can score one...LOL

OMG Great links, Alan. My sister had a Playtape 1200 and it was a riot when I figured out how to get my cassette tape to work in a PT cartridge. Sort of the poor man's (or woman's) 8-Track.

During the weekend I'll shoot you my draft of the open letter to Rick B - if nothing else it will be an interesting read.

>"Broadcasting from the studios of the (such and such) law firm" on WWYZ.

I've Country 92.5 run that in the middle of a promo with artists saying who they are.

I'm waiting for someone to call WWYZ looking for a lawyer. Oh wait a minute, nobody is there because they are voice-tracked most of the time. :)

Jammin' 99.5 used to broadcast from what I called the "Icebox Studio" or the "Greenhouse Studio" depending on the season, the motto I used was "because it's always 20 degrees warmer in here than it is outside". It's an old house with an uninsulated attic.

Somebody get me in touch with Rick. I'd GLADLY go up there and adjust the processing FREE OF CHARGE just to make the station listenable again. I know, it's a pipe dream, but it's worth a shot. I mean seriously, some people are picky about the programming, that's not something that sticks in my craw. I frequently hear GREAT records on DRC-FM, but I just HAVE to tune out because it sounds absolutely ATROCIOUS. Hands down the worst sounding high-profile FM on the Connecticut dial. Hell, WXCI 91.7, the WestConn college station runs circles around this heritage flamethrower....

WHAT THE HELL PEOPLE???

-end rant-

As a side-note: Interesting how this thread about Cheap Channel and their advertising nonsense turned into a thread about WDRC-FM, isn't it?

Back to the subject at hand (maybe) - Come on, you gotta come up with something than "Broadcasting from the studios of Frump & Giggle, LLC" This is not creative advertising, it's just a shoddy attempt at hoodwinking the sheep. Nobody with an IQ over 90 is buying this crap....

Fair Enough.

Here's what I think...When properly selected the studio sponsorship can add credibility to the station. I think F.Y.E. is AWESOME.....Good pick by the PD. McDonalds...SILLY BA-DAH-DAH- DA-DA I'm NOT lovin it.

I can agree with the first part. I also agree that F.Y.E. was indeed a good choice.

ESPN and BUDWEISER.....C'mon man thats GREAT.

Not really, sports people--fans and players alike--already are stereotyped as being jerks and worse. Some pretty recent sports 'melees' have been fueled by alcohol. No, I'm not anti-alcohol by any stretch. As a side note, I think the drinking age should be lowered. I don't think the association of alcohol and sports is necessary. Why not "The Sports' Authority" studios.

Please remember that ESPN itself has been doing this for quite some time.
The phone line they do interviews on is the "ONSTAR hot line" They even have a sponsor for their email box.

Radio in general has been doing this for some time. Listen to those old Time Radio shows, "The Shadow" was sponsored by Blue Coal, "It's A Wonderful Life" was sponsored by Lux Soap--nothing new here.

There in lies part of the problem. The production value of a 30 or 60 second spot is so bad that the 2 second blink actually sounds appealing. Your right about the Idol example, if someone thinks that a 60 second promo with Simon being rude is good production and will entice new viewers than that person shouldn't be on that project.

Can I ask you this Info...Why so negative about change? Are you angry that you can't load up the cart deck and fire 'em off for 10 minutes so you can brag about 50 minutes of what ever you do?

I have nothing to brag about. I know others might have read this, but since there are a lot of forums and threads, I'll state it for the benefit of all. I've worked the past 8 years at a commerical AM as the Studio Op. Prior to that, I spent 4 years as an Op/host at a college station. In high school, there was a little foray into the world of pirate AM. This past September, I left the radio station because there wasn't any money in it. I work in a retail outfit doing an 'unskilled' job and make a heck of a lot more than I did at my former station. I'm going to continue to look at getting back into radio, but I'm not going to obsess over it if I never do.

If I was a name brand like Fox...I would LOVE this. When they first tested this Blink thing it was for fox's "24" instantly their numbers grew...By a very impressive number I might add. I can't tell the exact amout but, I remember it being pretty impressive.

This one's tough to prove, because 24 also had the benefit of Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck hyping the show, not to mention the traditional lenght television ads running during other shows.

Ba-dah-da-da...da
You know you just thought "I'm lovin it" in your head and that was just from reading the jingle.

Not really, but I am a slow reader because of some funky vision thing. Without the right pacing, I was expecting an insult or something along those lines.

THAT'S taking your brand and getting MORE for LESS.
Just because a corporate company does it does NOT make it suck.

I never said that. I said blinks are the stupidest thing I've heard done. I don't care if the mom and pop deli was creating them.

Have you EVER heard somebody (a listener) complain that the message was too short?

Yes, I have.

EVERY thread on this board spirals into a WDRC or 990 AM discussion. Don't care about either of them! :)

Keep in mind, both radio AND tv are going to try to advertise more and more.

With TV, I've been bugged by the "bug", that little logo in the corner with various amounts of transparency. Now, they run full motion action mini "soundless commercials" in the lower third of the screen - many times most distracting to the program you're trying to enjoy. Absolutely inexcusible as far as I'm concerned.

You're going to see radio leverage this more and more with "sponsored by" liners in weather, time 'n' temp, school closing announcements, etc. I bet somebody's going to get creative with "brought to by Yadda, Yadda, Yadda, this is a test of the Emergency Alert System - this is only a test" and "This concludes this test of the Emergency Alert System brought to you by Yadda, Yadda, Yadda."

Who wants to make a wager some PD is gonna read this and have it on the air before the end of the month?

1300 ESPN Radio should be broadcasting from the dumpster behind the Radio Towers Pit
They have about 4 listeners, excluding the Janitor. LMFBO ;D :D ;D

I finally figured out who you are.
doesn't your employee handbook say you can be fired for speaking ill of your company?

Wow you've been out for TWENTY years....What about the board oping in the 90's for the stoned mid day girl.
What about the move into RTP in 1993...Were you a volunteer?
I think you should go to bed...Don't you have to get up early??
