Browns to 92.3 The Fan/850 WKNR?

The problem I have with the Browns no longer on WTAM is the loss of the game broadcasts no longer on a powerful signal which effects fans in certain portions of Ohio and many other states. That's especially the case for late afternoon and night games. In this area, the day games may be heard on WONE - 980-AM in Dayton, Ohio which is on the Browns Network. However, at sundown, that station goes directional and reduces its power. In November & December, that's just about 5:30 P.M. which even effects games starting at 4:15 P.M. There have been many times when that has happened and I was able to switch the radio to 1100-AM. That won't be possible now.

I do understand this does give the Browns a station basically all its own and prevents not having Indians or Cavaliers games being given priority. I can recall some games not being on because of the Indians game or a Cavs pre-game show starting as the Browns were going into overtime. Having the games on two FM stations is nice, too, but only for those in northeastern Ohio who can receive them.

Now you can add more stations to the network that will cover the areas that WTAM formerly was able to reach. In reality there is no need for WONE or WAKR to broadcast games in Akron but they do.

But the Problem with Dayton. with it being in the Bengals Market. WONE-AM airing the browns was one of those rare oddities where a station airs the home market's rival in the home teams market. so its gonna be had to get the bengals really to allow the browns an FM station in Dayton in reality

Dayton isn't the Bengals' home market. The Browns are still a strong No. 2 to the Bengals in Dayton (the exact opposite of Columbus). I don't see anything wrong a Dayton station airing them.

It will be interesting to hear Trivisonno today. I wonder if he changes from the Browns #1 apologist to their #1 critic. My guess is yes. He always kissed Randy and Al Lerner's rearend claiming to be great friends with both. Seems Jimmy Haslem won't give him the time of day and that rubs him the wrong way.

While I certainly understand this is good news for GKB & CBS Cleveland....two things in particular strike me this afternoon:

1. It's HYSTERICAL to hear BOTH 92.3 & 850 say they are "the radio home of the Browns".

and...

2. While this Browns contract (s) is a big deal...the Indians season begins in 5 days. I've tuned in and out of both stations literally about 20 times per station in the past 6 hours while out on the road between appointments...and I've heard NOTHING other the commercials and Browns talk.

The Cavs, unfortunately, stink...don't expect to hear anything about them. But NOTHING about the Indians 2013 team that begins play Tuesday????????????

And radio stations wonder why the internet is slowly eroding their audience. Insane.

Tim, I like the Indians as much as the next guy but unfortunately they just don't seem to draw much of an audience outside of baseball season. The Cavs talk is non existent even when the team is good outside of the playoffs. It is what it is in this town but the Browns are always going to be #1

The Browns ARE the #1 sport in our market...but, are the Browns also, #2, #3, #4, #5, etc., etc., etc.???????????

No team or sport deserves nearly 100% of the coverage ALL FRICKIN' YEAR LONG.

This could be the best Indians team in 5 years....and no mention about opening day that's 5 DAYS away on EITHER sportstalk stations? That's absurd.

Again I am not saying you are wrong. I agree with you. Plus this is a big day for both 92.3, 98.5 and 850. If they talk Browns football on opening day then I would think they are crazy.

Well, he said "Thank God!", ripped KNR and The Fan as being "minor league" (referencing ad rates as to why), played MLK's "Free at Last" speech, and declared "now he's REALLY gonna let loose" and "tell the truth" regarding the Browns.

Well, expect an increase on TAM.

Bob Frantz and Dave Ramos also ripped on The Fan and WKNR along with Triv on "The Spew" earlier today too. If they were so concerned of WTAM and WMMS losing the Browns rights, wouldn't they have complained to their boss at CC?

Dave Ramos runs a garage sale on the radio on Sunday afternoons. He should be happy they left. He can sell his garden hoses and rakes during Browns shows now ;D

Question for those of you in the know...........I would assume a majority of the ad revenue generated by the Browns games will go to CBS radio considering they have the two FM signals and more fans will tune into the static free signal of FM radio, no???????

This parntership allows both stations to claim they are major league outlets, especially for KNR.

Unfortunately, I don't think they will not be adding stations to the network in states other than Ohio and Pennsylvania. WTAM reached a good portion of the Eastern U.S. and probably more than that at night.

I would like to see an FM outlet in southwestern Ohio go on the Browns Network. It would help with coverage when WONE in Dayton lowers its power at sundown during the season. I would be interested if there are NFL regulations about teams having radio outlets with-in so many miles of another franchise. Dayton is approximately 55 miles from Cincinnati.

I noted about the Browns fans in Dayton and Columbus, but it might be pointed out that there are many right in the Greater Cincinnati area. Even up into the early 1980's, the Browns Network had an FM station in Oxford, Ohio and an AM outlet in Covington, Kentucky. Since then it's been WONE in Dayton as the closest one.

I think some of that is sour grapes. They'd much rather have them than not have them.

But at the end of the day, KNR and The Fan won out because they can almost be 24/7 Browns Radio, while the CC stations can't.

TAM's all about Wills and Rush and Triv and Frantz and the Tribe and Cavs...oh yeah, we also have the Browns.

MMS pushed the Browns a lot more, as they were a central cog in their evolution from rock to mancave, but could you really see them running "Browns Daily" from 1-3 p.m. before Alan Cox or air any other infomercial-esqe auxillary programming?

The Browns wanted stations they could dump buckets of orange and brown paint on, with a response of "thank you sir, can I have another".

If you have an HD radio, which I'm assuming you don't because hardly anyone has one, WTUE's HD-2 is a simulcast of 980, and if you're in the northern 'burbs like me it's a tough catch but doable. Your best bet however would be to listen to WONE online, since they usually stream the games too.

WTAM, like most 50,000-watt, non-directional AM stations have an average daytime signal coverage area of about 150 miles.

Nighttime, 75% or more of the time these AMs do in fact have much greater coverage...up to about 600-750 miles.

But the statement "38 states and half of Canada" is simply not true on an everyday basis....for ANY AM or FM radio station over the air. Don't know if the on-air folks know they are b.s.-ing the audience and their advertisers, or they are so uninformed they just don't know.

I laugh everytime I heard Triv say: "open lines America". Obviously trying to make his audience think people all over North America can hear WTAM over the radio. Anybody who's worked in radio more than 10 years knows that's just not true...doesn't matter what station claims it.

Back in the day, with far less electronics to cause interference, the 38 states/half of Canada line was very plausible.

1100 has been using that line since the Pete Franklin days.

It isn't just WTAM, I've heard several 50,000 watt clear channel stations (not the company CC) claim they cover "38 states and half of Canada". It was some consultant's slogan for them years ago and they're still using it.

700 WLW in Cincinnati uses the "38 states" part, not sure if they use the "Canada" part.

And seriously, what did WTAM/WMMS expect? I saw the Indians' radio schedule last month. Both stations are airing the Indians on Sundays in September. So why would they complain about the Browns leaving, when there's obviously no room for them on either station's program schedule?
