BRW: 1510 to sports?

tweet from @bostonradio:

>>Something's big brewing at 1510. Deal signed. All signs point to sports but yet to get a confirm.Details next week. Sep 4th launch

1510: If sports it could be yahoo sports radio, ESPN Deportes, NBC sports (prob not?), Fox Sports (Prob not?),
who knows.

1200: If they continue talk they could possibly pull shows (no local, of course not) from Dial Global,
TRN, or Cumulus--not sure if they would go for prog talk but who knows:

TRN: Laura Ingraham

Dial Global: Smerconish (WTKK), Dennis Miller (WRKO), Schulz,
Steph Miller, Thom Hartmann, Bill Press, Jim Bohannon

Cumulus: Imus, G. Rivera, M. Huckabee

would make sense I believe they start around the same time,It's the only sports network left, yahoo isn't doing well or can't come up with the cash, nbc is just starting up and they want to be in as many big markets as possible, espn to 850,fsr to 1200,sports is going to get crowded. Don't they have the nfl package??

Yes...Mark said sports, talk, ethnic easy sells on AM. YSR indeed isn't quite doing what they should and 1510 has been running it only to put something on for now I'd guess. As for 1200 not sure whether or not
it would be FSR...it is a Clear Channel product though. Would 98.5 want to lose JT?

NBC/Dial Global does indeed have NFL package and I'd guess 1510 would run unless WEEI works out a deal
of some sort. One thing's for sure, RKO not going sports other than maybe some overflow from 93.7/850
(example: suppose EEI wants to put Sox on both 850 and 93.7 despite the "ESPN 24.7" deal and
C's have a game...send to RKO...?)

@bostonradio tweets:"Most likely new NBC Sports Radio brand which is launching on 9/4 but nothing official yet. Announcement on new format next week @LHGrant3"
>>Also, new NBC Sports Radio Net is meant to lean on NBC's regional cable nets like CSN New England so it may have local content
>>That's what not clear right now - I have a feeling they may announce more shows next week for Sep.4th launch. Will wait and see.

Well if Sept 4 is thae date---Here's a clue from "AllAccess"
Erik Kuselias, Jon Stashower Join NBC Sports Radio Network

New Hires
DIAL GLOBAL and NBC SPORTS GROUP's new NBC SPORTS RADIO NETWORK has its first talent announcement, hiring former ESPN and THE GOLF CHANNEL host ERIK KUSELIAS and ESPN RADIO sports update anchor JON STASHOWER. KUSELIAS, currently hosting "NBC SPORTSTALK" on cable's NBC SPORTS NETWORK, will host 7-10p (E) weeknights and STASHOWER will serve as update anchor 6-11a (ET) weekday mornings, beginning SEPTEMBER 4th.
KUSELIAS said, "The opportunity to host a signature show on the NBC SPORTS RADIO NETWORK is beyond exciting. I just put a calendar on my desk that counts the days until we launch! I believe 'THE ERIK KUSELIAS SHOW' will be a standard for the best mix of smart and fun sports talk radio."
"I'm very excited to be joining the NBC SPORTS RADIO NETWORK", said STASHOWER. "Having been there in the early days of both WFAN and ESPN Radio, I know there's something special about a new venture taking off and being part of its growth."
EVP/GM CHRIS CORCORAN added, "As we kick off our exciting talent announcements for the NBC SPORTS RADIO NETWORK launching this fall, we are thrilled to have two tremendously talented sports minds and voices join our team and our lineup."
NBC SPORTS GROUP SVP ROB SIMMELKJAER said, "ERIK and JON have impressive track records in sports radio, and we are excited to have them as two of the keystones of our new network."

Norm: He says the deal for 1510 has been signed and they are working out programming details,
with announcement coming next week. 1200 is still up in air for now but he can speculate. Mark has been pretty reliable though as always if something isn't totally confirmed we'll say so.
I would say he's a pretty reliable source and follow him on twitter to get a pretty good idea on
what may come down.

He gave a big clue about what WRKO's announcement was shortly before it came down: the fact
that Katz and Severin were out at TKK; therefore, the "big" name they were bringing about wasn't
big Ed but big Rush and 1200 is either out as a conserv talker, OR limping along with all syndie.

>>There are markets out there w/4 or 5 sports stations. Boston could be one of them right after Labor Day weekend.
May or may not be related - CSNNew England which normally simulcasts Dan Patrick's FSR show is not airing it as of this week

I think you might see CBS move up their launch to Fall to meet NBC.

I would think Yahoo Sports is finished.

We've been hearing this for years -- remember Sporting News Radio? Yet this network, direct descendant of One-on-One Sports keeps finding a sugar daddy willing to prop it up, despite being such an also-ran that it only rates filler-programming status on Sirius XM.

i was wondering what that meant, Could it be finally that Toucher and rich to simulcast on csn???

CSN has dropped Dan Patrick nationally.

It is very possible Patrick may soon wind up on NBC Sports Radio at which time CSN will again clear him.

Isn't it ironic that going back now 21-22 years but the only all night sports option for sports came out of Kendall Square Cambridge with Tom Star.

Yes - the father of the Callahan-Sumner Radio Network was the biggest player for overnight sports but screwed it up.

Remember the person that set it all up for Star was a young Jason Wolfe who would wind up going to Glenn Ordway at WEEI begging for a job.

What Jason did to some of the people at WEEI that befriended him 20 years ago is borderline criminal.

Wow. It sounds like there are a lot of people who might want a slice of a very small pie. All of these sports formats(?) despite the fact that:

1) Boston has no history of supporting "neutral" national sports networks,
2) WEEI and WBZ-FM are so established and have such strong ratings because the audience likes local sports talk,
3) AM has an increasingly smaller audience overall, and
4) Many AM signals have coverage deficiencies.

Given these facts, could stations with formats provided by "neutral" national sports networks remain viable in this market?

"Viable" is a lot more achievable with a station with less than a half-dozen full-time employees that plays no music and employs no air talent. As long as there are advertisers gullible enough to believe that they're "in Boston" with this signal, the station will be profitable, I would think. There's also the branding factor -- Disney props up dozens of Disney Radio kiddie stations that never show up in the ratings, knowing that whatever listeners they have are being exposed to the Disney brand. Maybe this will be CBS Sports Radio and NBC Sports Radio's strategy for AM radio: talk, talk, talk, with plenty of mentions of the great content CBS/NBC provides on radio, TV and over the Internet, yadda, yadda, yadda. Boston's parochial nature doesn't mean a thing; they'll take whatever 25-44 males they can scrape up with talk when the big boys in the market are running play-by-play.

You don't have to agree with this, but here's the thinking:

--Desirable demo to advertisers
--Despite a fairly small audience, they happen to be loyal
--Some sports fans would mostly like WEEI and WBZ-FM but they'll also tune into a smaller station
doing a national network
--"Time spent listening" on talk is desirable to advertisers. You get into the topic, and hear the ads
--Low budget. Turn on comp./sat. dish. No music/lic. fees.
-->>There's also the branding factor (agreed)
-->>they'll take whatever 25-44 males they can scrape up with talk when the big boys in the market are running play-by-play. (Exactly)

Look at what some advertisers do. Instead of putting up billboards etc. (outlawed in some states) they will "sponsor a highway"--and get their name out. Instead of running an ad, they'll get a brief ad-mention during a ballgame ("it's little Debbie snack time"). If you're the Kowloon you bring food over to Howie and he
mentions you, and you get a nice mention at a fraction of an ad buy.

This is what they want. Mentions of the brand (be it a national network or an advertiser) to a loyal
audience.
Sports on AM: it may not be huge money, but it's some money...thus these networks wanting to clear
shows and ads on 1510 and perhaps 1200 (and throw in 850). Heck, someone could switch to
ESPN Deportes too for all we know.

Is NBC going 24/7 anytime soon? I thought they were starting slowly, with 6 hours/evening.

If that is true, and 1510 is going with NBC, what fills the other hours?

If you were paying attention, I alluded to this in one of my posts last week. :) The NBC/Comcast deal is pretty much complete. Rebuild America continues from 3p-7p and there may be some local sports shows. 1510 will also sell time to other broadcasters with compelling programs.

The other broadcasters' ability to pay and how much they're willing to pay are likely to be the true "compelling" factors here.
