Yesterday evening, Boston TV News (http://groups.msn.com/bostontvnews) first reported a story for which we now have confirmation:

Todd Gross has been abruptly fired by WHDH.

One report said he appeared on the station's 4pm newscast yesterday, but was told to pack his things and was escorted out by security before the other newscasts later last night. That later turned out not to be true.

BTVN expects to speak to a very reliable source (a colleague of Todd's) before the end of the weekend, so please keep checking to see what new information is available.

he wasn't fired. his contract wasn't renewed.
some other contracts in the news dept. are not being renewed.
budget cuts. miami made the call. poor nbc prime-time is killing
ad rates on 7.

he never went on the air on friday. his milk crates(he stood on them during
weather. he is only 4-11) are gone as well. check your garbage at the door before let it out.

Actually word from Bulfinch is that he was escorted out during a newscast on the 2nd floor. It all came after a long meeting with Linda Miele...

Personally I think Pete should STAY in mornings. Not because he isn't great, but because he has gained such a following in the mornings for being a little nutty...while at 11pm, I don't think they would give him that freedom.

todd was a better morning met for fourteen years than he was chief the last three. he fell into the job. if harvey didn't bolt for more money at 5 three years ago, todd would still be working mornings at 7. management waited good two months before naming him chief. that's no vote of confidence if you're the #2 guy in the weather dept.

hey, it's a shame a guy lost his job after 21 years with the same station, but most media jobs come with a high risk of being let go at any time.

pete will do great. he's a pro.

That's a shame, I always thought that Todd did a great job and was a talented met. Every bit as accurate as anyone else in the market. Personally, I would be LESS likely to watch 7 without Todd's WX forecasts. Pete Bouchard does not seem up to the task of chief met - nor do any of the others who remain in the department at 7. All are okay, but none are as good - or authoratative - as Todd.

The only truly great met left in the market is Harvey Leonard on 5 - IMO.

I wonder what happened to cause Todd to get the sack?

Wonder if Ed Carroll will take his place? Liked Todd Gross. Just goes to show that weather is just becoming another profit center for these stations. If they could go back to the early 60's and have "weather girls" and tight angora sweaters and get away with it they would. That goes for all the stations,

You and I seem to have a penchant for disagreeing with each other, so I hope you'll forgive me if I do so one more time.

His contract may well have been nearly up, but Todd WAS fired, in exactly the same way as was Kim Carrigan.
I have an extremely reliable inside source who has told me that, having been on the air to do a tease at about 3:45pm, Todd was then summoned to meet with the suits, and by 4:10pm, when Terry Casey came on-air in Todd's place to deliver the forecast, he had been instructed to pack his things and was escorted out by station security.

Had this been any other station but 7, they probably would have let him finish out his contract and let him go gracefully, but 7 being 7, they decided to push him before he could jump.

By the way, where are the Herald and the Globe on this story? It's the biggest thing to happen in Boston TV since the Carrigan fiasco!
 
Haven't read either paper yet but it might not hit them till tomorrow; maybe they're having trouble contacting the folks at 7 for official details. I'll
bet it at least makes Inside Track in Herald tomorrow.

having security escort a terminated employee(s) out
of the building is a standard operating protocol in much of corporate
america. go rent 'in good company'. it will help you understand
some of our corporate culture which is probably very different from the one
in your country.

have it your way, 'boston tv man'. axed/dumped/canned/fired/let go/not
renewed. take a pick.

I understand the security escorting out of the building thing is routine... but the fact that they let him on-air first is pretty scummy, but it's exactly what we've all come to expect from 7.

I've talked to people directly involved in the decision in the last 24 hours; I can't say anything yet (check back tomorrow), but let's just say I know whereof I speak, even if my mother's untimely death from cancer has forced me temporarily out of the country until I finish university. (I'm not in England by choice, and no, I was NOT deported. I am severely physically disabled and had to leave for medical reasons)

Please don't patronize me... I am personally very well-acquainted with many anchors, reporters, and producers in the city; I lived in Boston for 7 years and developed a passion for the business which you and I clearly share - a passion that lasts to this day.

At this writing, 4 P.M. EST December 4th, Gross' bio has vanished from the WHDH-7 website. WBZ-4 must be wishing that this had happened a number of weeks ago. If it had, they would not have had to go to the Icebox Of The "Lower 48" States (Minnesota) to find a new weeknight weather anchor---they would have been able to hire Todd Gross!

Or could 'BZ somehow cancel the contract they signed with Ken Barlow in order to hire Gross??

Might this be the beginning of numerous changes at WHDH?? Could more news people be pushed out the door or decide on their own to leave??

Could Gross' departure be a cost-cutting move in advance of a sale of the station (read: WHDH becoming an NBC O&O)??

It would be quite incredible if, over the next few months, WHDH owner Ed Ansin sells the station to NBC and NBC, once they take over WHDH, decides to bring back Gross. Again, I have not heard anything to suggest that a sale of WHDH will happen soon, but were NBC to buy the station, bringing back who I consier one of Boston's top TV weather anchors would be fantastic PR!

if you know the full story and have it confirmed then run with it.
what's stopping you? you've been sitting on it for 2 days now. are
you waiting for the track to push it out tomorrow so that you could
claim you had it 'first'. common, show some stones. it will only
give you credibility.

The WHDH sale has been a prepetual rumor for years. Ansin had turned down
billion dollar offers from NBC and Fox for WHDH/WSVN in the past. Why would he say yes now? He already said the stations will stay in the family
and his sons Andy and James are fully involved in the company. James
oversees the entire marketing of WSVN/WHDH.They are not selling.
Once that empty bag Mike Carson retires(he's almost over that sexy
age cut off of 65), James Ansin will probably run WHDH in Boston.

bring back a guy who will forever be known as someone couldn't
succeed Harvey The Legend?!

I'd guess that NBC wants WHDH more than Fox wants WSVN. Employee morale at WHDH doesn't appear to be the best, considering the awkward departures of Kim Carrigan and now Todd Gross. With NBC's primetime lineup equivalent to the Titanic, the potential value of the station is probably lessening every day.
And seeing that the Ansin family is located around Miami, how important is WHDH to the family? And how important is WHDH to NBC? Probably much more.
