Bubba on the way...

to Pittsburgh? Word is that Bubba The Love Sponge has a home in Pittsburgh (and a couple to a few other cities) at the beginning of '09. Announcement Monday.

The end of intelligent life as we know it.

But where? He originates from Cox in Tampa. Cox had been rumored as a buyer for the CBS cluster here.

Gee, maybe then they can bring back The Zone on 93.7 and give Gab Bonesso her job back.

Actually BTLS is mostly on classic rock stations elsewhere, 102.5 "The Bone" in Tampa, Rock 105 in Jacksonville (where the Greaseman is now doing afternoons, albeit from his house in DC), and supposedly headed for WHTQ in Orlando. I'd LOVE to hear Grease on a daily basis.

I'm not sure he would fly here, he's crude and not particularly funny. Well suited to Florida but I just don't know. I always thought Lex and Terry would work better here (they're carried on WCLG in Morgantown).

Can't think of anywhere else that would make sense without a format change.

I find this interesting solely for the fact that Mark Madden often spoke of a bit he wanted to do that management stopped where he would hire a butcher to slaughter livestock on the air.

Don't ask me why he wanted to do that. I don't think there is any justifiable reason to do so.

Regardless, I do know that Bubba once actually did that.

Whether Mark was trying to steal a bit Bubba did or "The Sponge" caught word of Mark's intentions and stole his idea, I don't know. I

But why would any station would want to put this sort of tastelessness on the air?

Moreso, who would want to sponsor it or patronize the businesses that would?

How about that! Now there will be two different Bubbas on Pittsburgh radio.

The love sponge and the bar owner, ::)

BTLS is nothing more than another in a long list of Howard Stern wannabees. I've tried to listen to him on Sirius and found him to be dreadful. Love him or hate him, there is only one Howard Stern. Long live Howard, goodbye Bubba and good riddance.

Taken from the Tampa threads, here is the news article...

"It's official.

TAMPA, FLORIDA –NOVEMBER 24, 2008 – Radio personality Bubba the Love Sponge®’s top-rated talk morning program, currently heard on Cox Radio stations WHPT-FM/Tampa (102.5 The Bone) and WFYV-FM/Jacksonville (Rock 105), will soon be heard on four more radio stations, covering the Florida cities of Miami, Orlando, Ft. Myers and Richmond, Virginia.

Cox Radio stations WHDR-FM/Miami (93 Rock), WHTQ-FM/Orlando (96.5), and WDYL-FM/Richmond (Y101), along with Beasley Broadcast Group station WRXK-FM/Ft. Myers (96 K-Rock), will begin broadcasting the Bubba the Love Sponge® Show on Monday, January 5, 2009. The show is broadcast live from 6 am to 10 am ET from Bubba’s own custom, multimedia studio in Tampa, which is regularly visited by stars from the worlds of sports, comedy, music and film/TV/video.

Because the Bubba the Love Sponge® Show is now available for syndication, and Bubba’s agent, Thomas J. Bean, is currently talking with additional interested radio stations, additional markets will subsequently be announced.

Bubba said, “First, we have to thank Cox for believing in us. They knew there was a certain amount of risk hiring us to return to terrestrial radio. Now that it has paid dividends in Tampa and Jacksonville, we couldn’t be more pleased with their enthusiasm for adding our show in additional markets. Furthermore, we are elated to be working with Beasley Broadcast Group, and feel that their firm commitment to our show has laid the groundwork for a long and fruitful relationship.”

The most recent Arbitron radio ratings survey (Summer 2008) shows that Bubba’s morning show on WHPT-FM is the most-listened-to in the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater market (metro area ranking 18) and the most popular program with radio’s most desirable audiences. The show is number one in ten demographics, notably with persons and men aged 12-plus; with persons and men aged 18-34; and with persons and men aged 25-54. The achievement illustrates Bubba’s continued lead in the top spot for the third consecutive ratings period since he made a triumphant return to local airwaves in January 2008, and is one of the fastest moves to the number-one spot in radio history. In Jacksonville, his first syndicated market outside of Tampa, Bubba has already achieved number two with persons 25-54.

Jay O’Connor, Cox Radio Regional Vice President and Tampa Market Manager, said, “Bubba's return to the Tampa and Jacksonville markets has been hugely successful. We're very proud of what Bubba, Spice, Manson, Brent, Ned, and the Bubba Radio Network has accomplished, and we're thrilled to announce that we're bringing Bubba's show to Orlando, Miami and Richmond.”

Brad Beasley, Vice President and Market Manager of Beasley Broadcast Group, said, “96 K-Rock has been rocking southwest Florida since 1986. One thing remains constant; our listeners expect a certain type of entertainment and we've always delivered. Bubba represents yet another new and exciting chapter for our legendary K-Rock morning show.”

With the four new additional stations airing the Bubba the Love Sponge® Show, he picks up Arbitron metro survey areas ranked number 12 (Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood, FL), number 34 (Orlando, FL), number 54 (Richmond, VA) and number 61 (Ft. Myers-Naples-Marco Island, FL), with a combined potential new audience of more than 6.5 million persons."

Since he apparently mentioned Pittsburgh on friday I'd assume one of two things...

1) They are still negotiating with someone, or
2) Cox is going to buy the CBS cluster here.

Can't see him winding up on any CC properties, they fired him from 98 Rock in Tampa and that's how he ended up on Sirius. (Having said that, he'd be a really good fit for the X).

And BTW the Ft. Myers station carried Stern for years.

Bubba can mention several cities, but it doesn't necessarily mean there will be future affiliates in those cities. I believe a few of the "Bubba Palooza" live events that have taken place/will take place include cities like Las Vegas where there is no terrestrial Bubba affiliate.

Yes, I know that. But he is reported to have said on Friday that Pittsburgh was one of the cities, so odds are that something's in the works but not done. What he did related to his Sirius show has nothing to do with this.

If cox did buy the fm cluster here in the 'burg and plan on putting BTLS on one of the stations, it is basically a given that STAR would flip to a station format for accommodate him.

Nope. Star bills a TON of money. You guys only see 12+ numbers and make totally wrong assumptions. Star is strong in women 25-54, and as they say in the sales office their numbers have "no waste", their audience is ALL women 25-54.

And look at Cox's track record in markets like Tampa, they lean very heavily on stations that cater to females. They would LOVE Star.

(The fact that Cox has gone down this road with Bubba and Greaseman still somewhat amazes me, they used to avoid edgy stuff at all costs.)

The B would be gone. It's doing nothing. Plus it's a much better signal than Star.

I can't see where he fits outside of DVE, and that's not going to happen as long as Geno is still with CC.

Cox is not buying the CBS stations. In fact right now nobody is. All deals on the property are off.

Interesting.
So KDKA's line-up would look like this...
5-9 Pittsburgh's Morning News.
9-1 Boorts
1-4 Clark Howard? I don't even know if he currently airs in PGH, but even if he does, I'm sure Cox would steel him and put him on the big stick.
4-7 Freddy?
I would hope they'd take 100.7 and make it rock, and turn b94 into An adult CHR. Obviously Y would stay.

Everyone say it out loud:

No matter what happens, Star will not change formats.

they are the most profitable station in the cluster.

Let's repeat that again:

No matter what happens, Star will not change formats.

I love the way everyone picks the station they don't listen to and figure it should change formats. I mean really, if you don't like it, why would anyone else, right?

I give 3-1 odds that the next post will be from the guy who thinks every station should go urban.

One more time to see if we were paying attention:

No matter what happens, Star will not change formats.

Here is my 2 cents . When I leave the warmth of Tampa and come to Pittsburgh, these are my favorite stations:

1. STAR
2. 3WS
3. BOB
4.WISH
5. LTJ
6. WAMO-AM

and WJAS to use as a sleep aid.

Assuming that CC will not use Bubba, what about this:

1) Bob or LTJ flip to Classic Rock
2) Bubba is put on a country station. John Boy and Billy do both Classic Rock and country.
3) Goes on a rimshot like SAM.
4) 93.7 goes Classic Rock.
5) WJAS goes all Bubba all the time except for Tesh

OR

Saul sells to COX
KDKA adds Bubba as he really is a talk show to compete with "The Mighty Quinn"

I think I remember Bubba being on WEBN in Cincy in the 90's. It might have been syndicated. I think J Corp. owned them at that time. Before the CC days.
