Bud Sawyer's 50 Years In Radio...

was noted and feted the other night at the Portland Eagles' club.

in attendance, from what i hear, were many of Bud's compadres from radio daze gone by, including Gary Dixon, Roger McKinney, Judy Michaels Pancoast, Bonnie Grant, Bob Gold.

anyone else there who can fill in the blanks as to the evening's event and the other luminaries on hand?

and Kudos, Props, BZs and AttaBoys to Wellington "Bud" Sawyer who has made a life out of a life's passion. even in the lean times, Bud stuck to his guns - (his family, faith and love of radio) - doing what he had to do to satisfy all of his priorities.

as Gary Dixon once noted on a send-off recording (for a different Portland-area broadcaster) i'd heard years ago - "A pat on the back is just 18 inches away from being a kick in the *ss" - but Bud is really deserving the former, not the latter.

my only concern is Bud's new hobby....

woodcarving....

with a chainsaw....

i'm not kidding.

Erie...

You probably missed him, but Chuck Sanford was also present....along with Joe Jeffrey & Bob Fuller. Apparently, Tom Hennessey and Tiffany Jones (Olson) were both invited...but due to conflicts were unable to show! :'(

One things for sure...it was a nice afternoon of reminiscing with Maine Broadcasters...past and present.

Gary (aka argytunes)

Gary -

wish i could have been there to hear the tales. i was asked (and did) to provide a recorder for the event. my son had a lacrosse game, and i personally spoke to Bud about the conflict. he told me to go and cheer. before i did, i let him know of the mini-disc recorder i'd set up at the podium. easy instructions: when the talking starts, press "record" and just let it run. when it's over, press stop. i had set the mini-disc to record for up to 323 minutes. just enough room for Bud to backsell a Garth Brooks song, sell us some automobile suspension system stuff, do the weather and still have room for JJ Jeffrey to tell a short story. ;)

i got there as the confab was breaking up - and noted the recorder was running but not recording. that little red light thing we've all grown used to was not on.

a room FULL of radio people ( a combined 2,387 years of radio if i've calculated correctly - 135 of them belonging to Chuck Sanford, Bud Sawyer and yourself) - and now I have to call Bud Sawyer and Judge John Sirica that there's a 73 minute recording consisting of me doing my #1 Smash Hit - "Testing. One. Two. Three. Testing." and then, nothing else. Damn it! Who invited Rosemary Woods? (kids: do a quick search on Rosemary Woods and read up on the 18-minute gap)

so - who, i ask if you noticed, moved the recorder? ouch.

maybe we'll do another when Bud gets to his 55th year of radio.

Rock On, Wellington!

My hat is off to you Bud. A true gentleman and professional, a legend if you will, to me and many others who had the pleasure of working with him over the years. Bud, if you are reading this...I'll still block for you anytime big guy. ;)
