Buddy is at the point of being Unlistenable

My guess is that if Citadel could, they'd get out of the Buddy deal yesterday. With the state of the economy, versus what they're paying him, it's just more barrels of red ink for a company that filled a river with red ink last quarter. Listen to the ads on Buddy's show today, versus when he went on the air. Roofers, pet clean-up services, dumpster rentals, etc. They had every adverstiser for the first month or two. This is the state of the economy today, however not that many personalities are taking home the amount of cash and trades that Buddy is.

Buddy has paved himself a Golden Road. Cause some contoversy. Go to jail. Then get paid way to much money for a mediocre radio show. I've always been a supporter of Buddy when he was mayor. He kicked Providence into high gear and made some amazing things happen. But then he screwed up. He paid the price and now WPRO is the one paying the price!

Somebody please tell me what the big attraction is to his program..... because I simply do not get it. Every time I tune in he's talking about Dinner. When he's not babbling about Food, you've got Ron chiming in trying to keep the show interesting. But it's just not interesting. Not $300,000 worth of interesting. That's for sure. If Citadel wants to pay that much to someone than fine. Go find a guy who will amuse us. Maybe write some bits. Make us laugh. Do something creative. ANYTHING! As it stands, Buddy's show prep consists of figuring out what restaurant has the biggest meatballs. Then he gets handed a thousand dollars a day for that. Not even a full days work either. Three hours work. That's about $333 for each time he mentions a Meatball.

Wait until those ratings come in. There are going to be a few people hanging their heads low on the trail. That's when the call will come in from Farid to lock a few more people out of the building.

The ROI is NOT good period! The shocker to me is why do they keep that dimwit General Manager? There is NO way in hell you can pay a talent that much money in a market this size. Radio is having enough trouble finding revenue as it is! Give the GSM a hug today. You can bet Ms. Hayes will try and throw him under the bus to buy more time.

Here is my theory, the Matt Allen show is an experiment. The guy does a reasonably good job and works cheap. They will watch Dan's lead in numbers and see if Matty can hold them. If he does, bye bye Mr. York. My guess is Matt makes a third of his old boss. In a soft economy you will not garner big ad shares in 6 - 9 PM on AM radio especially up against baseball. Plus, Matt is not exactly the kind of guy you want to take out and meet clients. He means well but probably wants to be home playing with guns and knifes. He seems a bit anti social and not overly client friendly. He does do live reads for that building company, "my family uses such and such builder" that's because Matt doesn't HAVE a house. He just got his first apartment recently! With that said, he is positioned perfectly. Matt, do not ask for more money. Wait in the bushes and when they fire the next talker you are IN. Back comes Savage and the expense line improves.

As a manager you should seek 8X ROI. WPRO is not even close now. I hope their FM's are fairing better.

Anybody know the tenure of Buddy's contract? Is it one year or longer? If it's a year then he's past the 6 month mark and while I think hiring him was a good idea I don't think the money was a smart move. If the contract is up in late September this could dovetail with the rumor of WHJJ going with all local talk. A less expensive Buddy could be the subject of another bidding war between the two stations with less dollars being bid this time around. Then again depending on his numbers and the ROI both stations could lose interest.

First of all he is 67 not 71. Second I think it was reported he had a 3 year contract. He would have been a fool if he took less. Third, 920 would be happy to have him to replace their zero rated Glen Beck and Hannity. Fourth his and Hummel's dismantling of the Cicilline For Governor campaign before it hit the ground has been a public service. Despite his last name Cicilline is one of the "chosen" and his corrupt, inept and crony infested regime has thus gotten a free ride from the daily newspaper just as his "close friendship" with Mario Hillario has bought him a pass at Ch. 10.

''My guess is that if Citadel could, they'd get out of the Buddy deal yesterday''.

Think for a moment about the deals Citadel has made over the past couple of years..ABC Radio, Imus, etc..

Citadel is just waiting for Paul Harvey to flatline..that clears 10 million a year off the books..Imus can always fall off a horse at the Cancer Ranch..and Buddy could always choke on a meatball..not that anyone would wish that sort of demise on him..

I have to agree with those wondering about the $300,000 deal in a market the size of Providence..what sort of justification was made to get this deal done?

Hey I give Buddy credit. He's doing what most radio people are unable to do. He's taking the media for a ride. He's on WPRO and Channel 6. He's still milking that Buddy DVD with personal appearances. He'll be representing WPRO in the Bristol 4th Of July Parade. He's making money others can only dream of. Corporate greed should be trickling down to the rank and file who should approach the business with the same mindset as the suits. Problem is most don't have the clout to do it. Buddy has it and while the clout may not always be there he's taking advantage of it while he can and loving every minute of it. He's shoving it right up the posteriors of the suits for everyone else in the business and showing everyone how it should be done if only the rest of us had the ability to do it. Bravo!

Sorry about that. The Pro Jo said Cianci was 70, but I think you're right. You're very right about the 'Chosen People' thing.
David hires almost only people who are Jewish or Gay. David converted to the Jewish faith decades ago. From Esserman down, David Cicilline practices a certain kind of bigotry.

Then, we really are hopeless, aren't we? I can't argue with anything quoted here. The part about 'most R.I.ers', is very true, in my life's experience.
R.I.ers LOVE Charlatans... LOVE them. Can't get enough of them. R.I.ers ADMIRE, ( some secretly) those who 'get away' or 'scheme' to get the TWO pensions,
the 'No Show job', the 'fix' of a problem. You can be a person CONVICTED of several crimes and go out and attempt to DESTROY another person based ONLY on 'innuendo'. I suppose Buddy Cianci is chiefly whom I'm describing, BUT NOT SOLELY! When I hear Cianci ridiculing 'Police' and F.B.I. and the U.S. Attorney and most of his listeners siding with and believing him, well, I KNOW R.I. is as good as DEAD. I've noticed Dan Yorke and Matt Allen and EVEN John Depetro are somewhat careful about throwing innuendo out, without vetting their stories, especially Yorke and Allen. Thats respectable talk radio. I think the only thing to stop Cianci from his reckless slanders, is for one of the Police, city workers, or private citizens Cianci goes after to SUE him personally. And make the Media well aware of it.
Don't misunderstand what Im saying please! If Cianci has good solid evidence of a scandal, or whatever , GREAT! Unfortunately, for the most part, Cianci is simply flinging MUD and seeing if it sticks. Listen to Cianci long enough and you hear a man who is HATEFUL of the Police and most other Law organizations. Remember, Cianci is an EX CON. A person who served 4 years in prison. Nows he's MR Squeaky Clean vangard of Law Enforcement?? Like I said, R.I.ers LIKE that just fine.. Don't you??
I don't think Buddy is trying to portray himself as Mr. Squeaky Clean at all, consistently acknowledges that he went away for 5 years, acknowledges that he had 2 runs as mayor; but the subject of his show and style really seems to affect people.
I listened for an hour today and he sounded 110% better than when I listened last week: tight, to the point (yes he mentioned Meatball Monday; but lo and behold, it is a show sponsor for the Sidebar-someone who wasn't advertising prior to Buddy being on WPRO!) and very interactive with the callers. He was talking about the original testing scandal; but there is some further info that came up over the weekend about it-so again, new info. I do think he tends to ramble on a bit with a little too much information on these subjects to try and paint too clear a picture; but in terms of how he carries himself on a show, it doesn't appear to be any different than how Arlene, Mary Ann, Tom D, Kassman, etc have in the past comported themselves on the air at times trying to find the button/angle of a story that will elicit callers (or passionate callers).

Arlene was a former A.G. and has no criminal record. Either do the others. Buddy has a serious criminal record. At The Cianci - Correnti trail there was testimony that to get on the Providence Police, Buddy wanted 5, 000 dollars . Correnti AGAIN as the 'BAG MAN'. There is a long HORRIBLE history of Buddy manipulating the P.P.D. He is the LAST person to speak about whats wrong with the Prov. P.D. But, he does it and NO ONE holds him accountable. Rhode Island is a joke.

WPRO must be doing some things right. We're constantly talking about them ! ;D

Talk radio , in general is BORING man! All the National hosts talk about is Pastor Wright! This has been going on for 6 frigging weeks! Cianci talks about the same 3 people. Day after day, now month after month. Cicilline, Esserman, and Simmons, THERE, I just did the last 5 months of the Buddy Cianci show!
Man , give me a break! UNLISTENABLE! 100 percent right!

Question: How can you tell a good host from a bad one?

Answer: You can stick a good host in any city and he will do well.

How many Rhode Island hosts do you think you could try that with and have any amount of success...?

hahahehe BWA HAHAHAHA.. I'm actually laughing as I type.

Yorke and Allen may be it. The rest are good enough for Rhode Island, which is pretty bad, but the common man listening to the radio doesn't care that much.

Listening to Cianci reminds me of hearing the tones of Arthur Godfrey as a child, made me fall asleep, not to mention the obsessive rehashing of the same topic every time I put it on. Unreal. RI talk radio is terrible.

Now I see why they talk about a snowstorm for 4 months. Local hosts prove that they are to empty headed to come up with any new material. So they Milk one story for half the year. Now it all makes sense.

What a Hyprocrite

Today Buddy is beating up Esserman about Providence Policeman taking cars home out of state. Of course that is a dopey policy, but when interviewing Jim Hummel about this, Hummel pointed out that it was going on when he was Mayor. Apparently it was okay then.

Thanks for the update. My window is open and I'm listening to the birds sing. It's very peaceful. I refuse to turn on my radio and ruin the serenity with Buddy attacks. Thanks to this board I don't even need to. Thank you :)

I'm wondering what WPRO's demograpgic breakdown has been like since Buddy's taken over that time slot? I would have a hard time believing it's done anything but get older. Not the sort of thing AM radio is in need of these days......

How long before something happens with Buddy? Today he was going after Roberta Cicilline. The sister of Mayor Cicilline. She wrote a letter about Buddy and marching in a parade. Cianci lost it on air. Started personally attacking her, then brought up her brother John Cicilline and the fact take John is going to court and it was nasty! In a recent news paper article it was mentioned Jack Cicilline, the Lawyer father , is the lawyer of Frank BOBO Marepese and Baby Snanks Manocio. Is Buddy that powerful , or is he just stupid?

Booooooooooooooooooooooooooo
