But nothing tops WKEY Key West. This will be FUN
Now I can't get Bertie Higgins' "Key Largo" out of my mind... were it is like a cart with no stop tone.

Reminds me of piling in the car on a weekend and driving down to Largo for Key Lime Pie and a big dose of Radio Martí RF.

It looks like the station was off the air from 03/10/2020~01/11/2021. It went back on the air from a new antenna mounted on WKWF's AM tower with a power downgrade to 6 Kw - still plenty to cover the market, the Conch Republic, and the nearby Naval Air Station. WKWF is broadcasting a classic jazz standards format with a bit of a Latin tropical lean that sounds like it would fit the feel of the area nicely. WKEY's FM signal is actually has a little better coverage than WKWF's FM translator.

WKEY was oldies, then classic rock before the current dance format. See more here:

Buddy's condo in Key West suddenly may qualify for a bunch of tax write-offs. It will be interesting to see what he does with it. There could be enough retired radio people in Key West who might be willing to provide local programming at a reasonable price. Maybe even a few sales people, too. Of course, there's always the VT option. Some Buffalo staff might have to visit in the dead of winter to get the correct "feel" for the area. ;)

At $301K it ain't gonna break the bank, especially if it's financed and rental for the tower space and transmitter are cooked into the price. Sounds like Buddy's having fun!

What are the demographics of Key West as far as year-round residents
The county is 83,000 and Key West (city) is about 25,000 per the last Census. The lower keys up to and not including Marathon are about 38,000 (mostly in Stock Island, Big Coppitt Key, Cudjoe Key, Big Pine Key).

For those 83,000 people, there are 23 commercial radio stations and 6 non-com stations and one unlicensed 50 kw AM station.

It is very exciting to have a station in Key West. My wife and I have a house down there and we go there often. I have always wanted this station in particular, because it blows away the others in terms of audio and bigness.

It blows away the coverage of the other 50K stations that emulate from Marathon.

The station is ALL NEW in regards to equipment. Everything is top-notch. Nautel transmitter, killer processing, everything.

Key West also has no "Local" outlet to get today's news, weather, etc.

They depend on Miami TV, other stations that say I Heart, and no local daily news.

There is an LMA in place. That will be in place as far as I know until 2024. The renter is a passionate radio guy doing a format he loves.

I think this is a perfect addition to BIG WECK, and when they come up, I will purchase more.

For now, I am thrilled about WKEY. It's a magical place

Also, check out my podcast yesterday with Adam Jacobson at RBR.com for more information.

More than a dozen stations are licensed to Key West or immediately adjacent communities that we refer to as the Lower Keys. That's for less than 35,000 persons.

I know or know of people who have bought stations in the Keys, in Traverse City, MI, in Aspen, CO, St. Thomas, USVI, and other "destination" markets. Most are seasonal, with a set of good months and a lot of really bad months. All have service based economies that don't have a lot of CSI for non-basics sales. And local clients discovered ages ago that tourists don't listen to the radio much, if at all, and since much of the economy is based on selling to tourists, radio is SOOL in that area.

I've seen too many people who visit an area for vacations and who think it would be great to have a radio station there. But when they realize some of the things I have mentioned... and have to spend some of the "bad" months there, too, they realize that such markets all have about five or six times as many stations as they can support.

Presumably the unlicensed one is Radio Marti? (which I thought was 100kW).

By all accounts, running just 50 kw. But yes, I was referring to Martí.

KEY is a Class c2 I believe? It can operate at 26K watts but that would be a total waste because 1/2 of it would be reaching marlins and hogfish

It's really very perfect.

BTW, my business plan is to NOT sell spots......do you think I'm THAT dumb?

It looks like the deal's done and dance is biting the dust in favor of smooth jazz and a local focus.
